Ayy, so we made it to a dozen threads! Mainebub gettin the footy wit the GoPro! Will be interesting to see how the fishing changes throughout the season, it's a good thing he started so early.

Also, LTB and MTB ships in a couple days. Should I drop the extra $10 for the "Pro" box again? Seems like the boxes are worth the money whether it is the $15 box or $25 box. My crank bait box is overflowing though so not sure if I can handle too many more Pro boxes.

As always, discuss fishin'

I've only caught a couple of them. Maybe around 20" each. They don't fight too crazy. They are so thin that it's not like they have a ton of strength to swim and run, I'm guessing it's all just the body shape and small fins. They are very, very picky about what they eat though and are hard to catch. One was on a nightcrawler on a bobber after they had been nibbling on it forever, and the other was a ~4" gold Rapala that I had to swim past them like a hundred times before they finally bit it. I heard they are skavengers which could explain why they didn't care much for lures.

I'm sure a 4' alligator gar would be fun to catch though.

Fishing the sea myself, im used to not catching antything, moreso than actually catching a fish or god forbid two.

But worry not, when it warms up, there should be more fish.

Otherwise i cant tell ya much... One of the freshwaterfags should have somethin for ya.
>>
>>704873
Is anyone else ever fishing there? Are they catching anything? What species of fish are in the waters you're trying to fish?
>>
>>704892
More often than not there's other people, I go out of my way to avoid them. I've got plenty of stuff for small/largemouth to fall back on but I'd prefer to get striped bass.
>>
>>704899
>More often than not there's other people, I go out of my way to avoid them.

I've gained a lot of knowledge simply by asking a fellow fisherman if he's having any luck, and then asking what he's fishing with. I've picked up several tips on lure selection and rigging for specific spots that I wouldn't have considered otherwise.
>>
>>704903
The last time I did that, the person told me to spray WD-40 on my lures. I usually do pay attention to what others are doing but I feel like it's down to luck lately seeing as I'm doing everything right.
>>
>>704903
Most fishermen are utter cunts. They act as if like youre gonna steal *their* fish from the sea. They often are nosey too.
Thats why i keep all my tackle im my bag, and when they come to me to snoop for what im casting, i retrieve as slow as i can and cast as fast as i can.

On the flipside, if you are a friendly dude who is willing to help and share your experiences, i will show you my entire tacklebox and my experiences with different lures.

But those people are rare.

Dad went out and got some new softies. He got really into them.
Im gonna have to get some gulp in the jar so i can dip these babies in them.

The hooks he got seem like they are too narrow, id like more hook gape.
But i did what i could.

The wobbler on top is an Ugly Duckling. Its freshwater, and made so shittily that it shows rust after the first dip. But ive had success with it in that dark green color from one of my previous pics.

>>705005
The river mouth area is competitive. Retards.
My town of family origin is a bunch of cheapskates who would want their rapala to outlast them, and they all want to talk to you when youre fishing to snoop out what youre using. Fuckem. Thats why i prefer being alone.
Especially when carp fishing.
>>
>>705040
I like those green and black ones. Although I have so many damn rubber swim baits like that now. The 25% off Zoom baits really got me. Can't beat getting like 20 baits for ~$2.50. I'll cast them into the worst snag spots with no care.
>>
>All Battle II's come with braid ready spools, no backing needed for these spinning reels; you can put braid right on the spool with no worry of ...

Thank you thank you thank you!!
I spooled mine and didn't know about braid's slippage issue and fortunately the Battle II has a rubber base on the spool. I'm sure I noticed it but I'm also pretty sure I was drinking when I spooled it.
>>
>>705050
Yeah. I got some other bigger softies for my rod.
Dad is mostly gonna use the small ones.

Ill post that pic of my tackle that ive been talking about for so long.

Thats a deal damn. these were like 45c a piece. Except the green-black daiwa duckfin, and the delalande squid, which were a buck a piece.
The wobbler must be like 8.50 iirc.
The small shad on the bottom right is berkley afaik.

I just want to see how different people fish, use lures, and their rigs. I could careless about people catching fish, I enjoy watching people fish, the hunt and they why.

So please do it! I'd love to see other /out/ists fish, we all talk big game, and photos are cool but watching different techniques and styles I tend to find most enjoyable.
>>
>>705134
Well that really just pushed me over the edge.
It wont come soon, but as soon as i can.

I dont really fish with finesse, as you will see, my rig is oversized, primarily with big predators in mind, but it does the job.

You are very skilled though, those casts in the final spot were ridiculous.
>>

When I figure out how to catch peacock bass, maybe I will do it.

The largemouth sessions were real fun a month or two ago, but this summer I need to figure out how to catch them when it gets warm. There's also supposed to be a few canals where you can get snakehead one after another if you just cast along the banks. Gotta find those spots too.

thinking of getting two diawa laguna seca reels since theyre on sale and can get them for $30 each, both will go on 7 ft spinning rods med action i like a smaller reel on my rod ( running 2000 series now ) i want a step up but will 2500 be too small? are there any downsides of having a smaller reel
>>
>>705192
Line capacity?

That's all I can think of. But I like running that 10lb braid because I can put it on a medium weight rod and get like 200yds on a 2500 reel. A 5.1:1 ratio on a 2000 reel will retrieve slower than a 5.1:1 on a 3500 tho so remember that. If you want quick retrieves on a smaller reel then go like 6.4:1.
>>
>>705194
Never had an issue with line capacity desu
I need to get some 10 lb braid and some 4-6 lb mono desu but I'm going to spend all my money on reels desu
>>
looking for a backpacking rod, 5 ft 2 piece would be ideal, ultralight would rather not get a telescoping one
>>
>>705196
That sucks. I really like 15lb on a 2500 reel. 10lb is nice too if you are tossing lots of 1/8oz lures.

Whenever I buy a reel now, I always factor in $20 for braid. But I have lots of 300ys spools at home now that prolly have 200yds left. I have a couple 150yd spools I haven't even used from when Power Pro or Spider Wire were BOGO 50% off.

I can't say that the gars around here (central and southern indiana) are very picky with what they eat. I have a friend that catches them all the time with bits of hotdog!
>>
>>705294
Maybe that works better than lures since they are supposed to be more of scavengers. When I had nightcrawlers out the one time, they were eating them but it was really hard to get them to eat the whole thing and the hook. They just wanted to pick at it.

But when it came to a Rapala, they didn't want to chase it like a predator. The time I finally got a hit, it was more of an opportunist thing. Lazy looking minnow swimming by like a foot away and the gar finally hit it.

When people target big gar around here (North Texas) they usually catch some large trash fish like buffalo or carp and cut it into large .5lb-1lb+ chunks for cut bait. Then fish them like you would a big catfish, just throw the bait out, reel the slack out of the line, and wait for a gar to take it. I've never heard of anyone trying to target gar with a lure, they just don't go for it for some reason.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RYU2l5mcYrc
>>
>>705417
>Love when 4chan flips pictures for no reason...

I think it happens when people use a phone. The phone autorotates images. The people taking the image think their phone is "right-side up" but in fact it is on its side or even upside down. The image has an orientation stamp on it which shows what side is up. Some websites use this and some don't. If nothing is used, it will show the image as it normally would be shown, taken upside down or on its side.

If you want to prevent this. Take pics the same way all the time using the proper "up" direction for the phone.

Not bad for a popper.
>>

How do I git gud? I want to do more river and lake fishing but the sea is nearby too.

>I've never heard of anyone trying to target gar with a lure, they just don't go for it for some reason.

I've always used minnow imitation lures for gar. Some people use a minnow-like piece of frayed nylon rope as the bait and the hook. It tangles on the teeth. I've never used that technique before.
>>
>>705451
Of course that's how the Yankees fish, here's what it looks like when a local goes fishing for Gar.

Seems legit, what would you recommend for river fishing if someone is just starting out?

Also from what I gather, the locals here like to bait with garlic, anyone ever do that?
>>
>>705475

We have no idea where you are or what kind of fish you are looking to go after.
>>
>>705475
Normally, live bait is the best thing you can ever use. Cocktails of mishmash for just about any species of fish is normally less effective when compared to live bait (baiting with live bait that the target fish eat normally that is).

That is the number one factor just about anywhere you go fishing. The second is using baits that mimic the live bait.

What knife get for my tackle?

A basic Mora or one of those Rapala filet knives. I've got a (albeit cheap as fuck but it was free and has held up for now) multi tool that I'll also probably toss in there.
>>
>>705534
I have that Skeletool since it has pliers and a knife without a ton of other shit I don't need for fishing.

>>
Sorta newfag here.

Gonna be fishing from the shoreline and docks. I've got some questions.

What are some things to look out for? Good spots where fish would be.

I'm mostly going after largemouth bass and sunfish and crappie.

Are sunfish and crappie actually any good for eating?

What are some extra items to keep with me while fishing?

Any knife and a decent set of pliers is always goat though. Sometimes you need something a little better than multitool pliers.

>>705546
Dropoffs, the edge of weed beds, underwater structure, fallen trees, little curves in the shorline and inlets or outlets.

Crappie and bluegill are both good eating. Big bluegill will give some tasty filets. I like it better than bass for sure.

And as far as extras besides tackle, pic related helps. Knife, pliers, scale and measuring tape if you want. I like to keep a rag and/or wet wipes too. Nothing worse than trying to shitpost with fishy hands. First aid kit or at least some band aids and ointment and alcohol pads especially if you aren't real close to your car or help. I also always have a little flashlight and headlamp. The headlamp was one of those things I should've bought years ago.

I try and avoid other people too. If I get to one of my little fishing spots and see somebody, I normally ask how they're doing, what they're using, and tell em good luck and then go to the other side of the lake. I get pissed when some rando comes up and starts casting right next to me.

Sometimes it will be somebody cool though. Like a week ago I was at one of my lakes and some nig came up and started fishing right down the way from me and I was runnin over there to show him some nice bass I got. It's ultra-serious old white dudes who seem to get pissy. Fuck that when you're fishing at some random lake for fun on a weekend. Just gotta give people their space.

I did get pissed a couple months ago when I brought my brother with me to this spot where we were fishing by this bridge and some family of Mexicans came up trying to fish right on top of us. I just kept getting really close to them and messing with their shit because lol 30lb braid vs Walmart mono.

going to fish a small lake tomorrow , nothin g more than 10 ft ( most 7 ft deep) probably no weeds yet, , small bass and bluegills, a real dissapointment of a pond, but its the closest thing to where il be tomorrow, maybe il get something, id love to get the pond more in balence( less small bass, and less gills by adding a few predators ) but its not mine so i cant, its a shame because it would be great if a few large bass or a few pickerel made there way there
>>
>>705679
I mostly use it to catch panfish using little poppers. I have caught a bass or two with it, but I don't have waders so it's hard to get to spots with enough space to cast.

What about some koi?

One of the little ponds by I-95 right down the street from me has these two big ass koi. At least 20", an orange and a white one. I thought about trying to go over there with sweet corn like I'm fishing for carp.

On another note, I really need to start tossing out lines for carp. Some of these lakes have fuckhueg carp and I haven't caught one in years. I also want to figure out how to catch those Plecos on a rod and reel. It would be really easy with a net or even more fun with a spear. Those fuckers infest a couple of the lakes and canals.

Supposedly there is common carp in a tributary about a mile from where I was fishing the other day. I've seen a few dead ones in the tributary, might try to catch some.

What's good bait, rigging for carp? I've never fished for them, however I've heard dogfood and hotdogs do well.

Sweet corn on a regular hook. Just thread a bunch of kernels on there. I also like white bread on a treble hook. Take the crust off and just mold it over the hook.

>>705784
>>705787
I know, I know. I'm just shitposting. I worked at a pet store selling fish for 4 years and have been fishing most of my life. Especially living in Florida now, I have seen what aquarium fish can do. Those Plecos (sailfin catfish) were originally aquarium fish and they are fucking everywhere.
>>
>>705813
>>705780
For common carp, they also sell dough bait. But I bet that shit is easy to make at home if you really want. It is normally kinda sweet with some anise in it.

But sweet corn or white bread has caught me and my friends so many damn carp. Normally I don't even cast it very far out. Find a nice flat area closer to shore and toss it out. Sometimes I even let the white bread on the treble hook kinda float. And if you do the bread or a can of sweet corn, it never hurts to chum like half of it.

I use a sliding sinker on main line - rubber bead to protect knot - swivel snap - leader of preferred strength - hook

My main is 0.40mm and leader 0.30. Like 30 and 20lbs.
The sinker is at least 50grams on my 45-145 rod, and 150gr on my surf rod.
Highly reccomend sliding sinker and not it being on the end. Gilt head bream has a habit to take the bait, and run it for a bit. If it feels a lot of resistance it just spits it out, the sliding sinker helps prevent that. Not sure about carp, but the rig i know is the same.

Anyone here ever tried deep sea fishing?

I make a trip every couple years to San Diego to visit the wives side of the family. Last time I was out there I saw a couple fliers for deep sea fishing charters.

Is it worth it? It looks fun. I'll be going out there next summer and would be interested.

pretty much the jist of it, mot techniques like nymphing demand splitshots, or heavy tungsten flies.

I always forget Mepps sells stuff besides just in-line spinners. I was at one of the few remaining K-Marts for work a month or two ago, and they actualky carried some of those Mepps spoon deals.

I should order some of those Syclops. Every time I'm at Dick's or Bass Pro, I keep on thinking about grabbing a few Kastmasters to put a regular hook on and use with soft baits after what Skid said. Dick's had a few on sale/clearace too. But then I end up buying a Rapala or two instead of grabbing a few Kastmasters.

I really like those jigheads with the blades on them to use with grubs and little soft minnows though. My only problem is they only make (or at least sell) 1/16oz and 1/8oz ones. I want to get some 1/4oz+ ones with big hooks for bass but can't find them. Getting up to that size, I just have to use a spinnerbait or beetle spin. Pic related snek was caught on one of the little bladed jigheads.

Having lost 2 raps in 2 days, i will need to get some. Definitely a replacement floating magnum in the same color, and eventually the 13 size sliver in blue back color. Needlefish look is what i want for ambers and blues.
But i def need that xxx-rap cast. Need the jerk action.

Yeah, but for generic soft baits i use generic lead ball jig heads... No point in spending that money, since im gonna lose the pos anyway.

How do you guys find water temperature data?
>>
>>706362
I would search for the Massachusetts fish and wildlife survey for that body of water, it will tell you which species live there.

You can find them on almost every body of water.

It should give you a hint of what you can target.
Come back to this thread when you learn what lives in the water and we can give you some tips on how to catch them.
For now though, focus on trying to find MASS IFW resources for that pond, this is the best way to know whats in the water without actually being there.

>>706374
NOAA, there is also a local fishing website that tracks the water flow of most rivers in my area, and water temp.
>>
>>706374
As far as saltwater? Or freshwater? NOAA or any Weather Channel surf reports gotta have sea temps. With freshwater, I can normally kinda tell when I pull a dressed Mepps out of the water and feeling the water.

Here is my lil collection of X-Raps so far. I think I need to grab another one or two in some silver shades. Those copper/gold ones with the orange bellies have been killers. Big gold one on the top left is the one I grabbed Saturday. Silver one below it has caught a few nice bass too. And I want to grab a Size 12 of that copper and orange one.

Also I'm still debating dropping the extra $10 for the "Pro" MTB box. It is getting close to shipping, I better do it soon. If they send me two more nice cranks again, I won't be able to close my damn crankbait box.
>>
>>706413
It would be my first time ever. I'm not sure how the pricing for rods go, but under $100 would be great if possible
>>
>>706412
You can kinda tell in the sensitivity. Nice rods seem to have a nice, sensitive tip yet a strong backbone. Plus the reel seat will be more sturdy, better guides, etc. But rod pricing is strange. I did Ugly Stiks for a long time and more recently finally dropped a little money on some nicer rods. Abu Garcia Vendetta was $80 so one of their cheaper ones, but it seems nice so far. And that Johnny Morris CarbonLite is a $120 rod and it weighs next to nothing. But I really do like those Berkley Lightning Rods now for $40-$50. The "Shock" Lighning Rod is specifically for braid and I would buy another.

I have a cheap $20 Bass Pro rod I grabbed just to toss a reel I had on a rod, and you can feel that it is cheaper when you shake it and the whole thing kinda wobbles. The nicer rods, the tip will wobble and the backbone will stay nice and straight. Next rod if I drop some money on it, I'm going to grab a St. Croix (just a $100-$120 one) or another Abu like a Veritas or maybe a little nicer.

>>706411
You should go to Bass Pro or Cabelas or something and get a combo. Those $50 Ugly Stik combos are ok, but the reels aren't really any good. Spend $10-$20 more on a combo and you can get a much better reel and comprable rod.
>>
>>706417
You have a Bass Pro near you? Cabela's? Dick's? Gander Mountain?

If you spend $70 or $80 on a rod and reel combo, you should be able to get something that you can proudly use for years. And I mentioned in the other thread that you can buy a rod and reel seperate, but you will save ~$20 buying a combo in that price range. Plus the rod and reel sizing will match and all that.

Bass Pro sells a Pflueger President combo for $80 with one of their Graphite Series rods. The reels are $60, and the rods are $40 all day, so you save $20 just buying the combo and those rods are nice for the price, I would put them on par with Ugly Stiks.

And for general pond and lake fishin' you will probably want a ~6'6" rod, medium weight, and somewhere around a 3000 series reel that will hold around 150yds of 8lb monofilament line.

Black/blue, blue/gold/orange, and pink back are the ones id guess i could use.

Gonna get the xxx cast in sardine, and a saltwater one smaller in either blue silver or a bright yellow/pink.

Dad has a zebco 15$ rod. Its almost legal drinking age. Caught so many squid on it. Some seabass, mackerel, bonito. Even something like a false albacore. Still uses it today. Its really nice for softies. Far better for them than my more expensive heavier gear.

If anything it will be fly gear and run you over 200

If none of Pepsi's stores are near you try kmart or even a bait and tackle (more spendy but less than REI)

Maybe it's a good idea I missed out on the "Pro". I have an issue here with his tacklebox. I guess with upgrading to "Pro" or changing the box type, it has to be done by the first of the month.

Just realized they will automatically bill me for another 3 months after the April box. Kinda a cool deal but I'm not sure if I will keep the subscription.

>>706441
You're the anon who was just asking about what to buy?

If that's your first real freshwater setup, it might be kinda rough. Baitcasters, especially a Silver Max, are gonna be hard to use with anything lighter than 1/2oz. So that limits you to medium sized bass and larger.

Did it come with an Abu Garcia rod? I like their rods. Even the Abu Rod that came with my Cardinal SX combo is pretty nice. Just wish the action was faster but can't win them all.

What's the best way to carry a fishing rod on a hiking trip? Thinking of buying a 2 piece and tying a fishing tube to my backpack.
>>
>>706451
I don't want to be a dick but that was a bad idea.

Not that he can't learn to use it, but I thought it was implied he was getting a spinning reel. If people are like me and just cast around at ponds and lakes to catch anything from bluegill to big bass to catfish, baitcasters should be like a 3rd rod. You can only really use them of you are specifically targeting bigger fish unless you want to throw 5 split shots on the line just so you can cast a Mepps 2.

If that's the same anon who was just asking what to buy, I'm afraid to ask what size line. It's probably like 14lb mono. Good for hucking 1oz cranks and jigs through the weeds, but that's about it.
>>

REI prices do suck. I have never actually been to one of their stores, but I was looking at some stuff online and it was all like 10%-20% more expensive than the other major retailers.

I don't even think there are any REI's around here. There were some up north when I lived there, but I had a Cabela's like 15min away, a Bass Pro about half an hour drive, and a really big Dick's was right down the street.

That Dick's was great. It used to be a Galyan's or something like that and I think they got bought out by Dick's. It was a higher end retailer and 2 stories. When Dick's bought it, they just started selling their regular stuff at decent prices but the store remained twice the size of a regular Dick's. Fishing section is like 1/3 of the top floor.
>>
>>706412

More expensive rods have a nicer finish/wrap. Lighter, more sturdy guides with more elaborate rod wraps, better handle materials and a quality reel seat.

Most high quality rods have a good warranty as well, although nothing beats ugly stiks 7 year warranty lol.

It all amounts to a lighter, prettier, more sensitive rod tailored to your desired specs.

Its like a ferrari vs a honda civic. That honda will get you from a to b and last almost a lifetime, but the ferrari is a masterpiece thats an absolute pleasure to drive.
>>
>>706460
So are you the one who bought the Silver Max?

14lb monofilament line. Just regular line, but 14lb is fairly heavy for bass fishing and catching crappie and bluegill.

This is why namefagging is helpful when having an actual conversation.

They aren't bad. But we thought it was anon who was asking about a first fishing rod. That would be a horrible idea.

>>706474
Ok cool. I was scared for a minute. Was going to tell you to return it and get a spinning reel.

Btw, I don't think REI really carries fishing stuff. Pic related. What other retailers are by you? If there really is no Dick's, Bass Pro, Cabela's, or Gander Mtn, you could just do Walmart. Sometimes they have a couple decent setups thrown in there but it might be hard to find one in the right size and if you need help picking the right line and spooling it, Walmart won't be able to help.

I actually grabbed that Lighning Rod from Walmart at like 2am. I bought that Okuma reel on Black Friday as an impulse buy and decided I needed a rod right then. The rod I bought was like the only decent 1-piece rod in a size and weight I wanted that didn't have the tip broken off. I fucking hate Walmart.

As mentioned before, those Ugly Stik combos aren't bad for $50, but you are basically paying for a decent rod and an extra $10 for a cheap line-holder. The reels will work fine, I actually bought one of those combos in a heavier size for messing around at the pier. But if you spend an extra $10 or $20, you can get a much, much nicer reel on a comprable rod.

>>706474
There has to be a Dick's around you at least.

There is a similar combo to this at Bass Pro for the same price. Same reel but Bass Pro brand rod. Not a bad setup at all.

Cabela's, Bass Pro, or at least Gander Mountain would still be the best because they will be able to spool the line and help you out a little better. Otherwise you can check out your local bait and tackle shop. May cost a couple bucks more bit they will be able to answer any questions. Any of those places will also have a wide selection of sizes for any one combo.

Also, have you thought about 1pc rod vs 2pc? I really like 1pc rods but I also drive an SUV so transport isn't an issue.

An Ugly Stik might be a tiny bit nicer than this rod, not sure. The rods are probably really close in qualiry though. But this reel will be leagues above the reel that comes on the Ugly Stik combo. And this one is only $10 more than the Ugly Stik combos.

A nicer reel will make a huge difference in performance. I will take a $50 reel on a $20 rod any day over a $20 reel on a $50 rod.

This one looks like it is on clearance so who knows if they have it in-store and in a correct size. But if I saw one of these in the store in a medium weight, I would buy it in a second at $80.
>>
And I got 12lb on it
>>
>>706502
It's a bad idea to get one of those as a first rod though. Not because they are difficult to use, but the uses are very limitied compared to a medium weight spinning reel with 8lb test.

If big bluegill or crappie are biting, anon could easily cast 1/8oz or 1/4oz lures out and catch them. Or even a nightcrawler on a bobber and split shot. Can't really do that with a Silver Max. And if the 3lb+ bass are biting and anon wants to toss out 3/4oz crankbaits, he can do that just fine on a spinning reel with 8lb line.

On the Black Max? That's straight. I have 30lb Power Pro on mine. Had 40lb (12lb mono diameter) but I took it off and put the 30lb. 1/2oz is about the lightest I will cast on that.

I have 20lb braid on the Revo and I can cast lures closer to 1/4oz with that. But I really don't like using it unless the lure is 3/8oz+. Otherwise I will use a spinning reel.
>>
>>706506

I have a crappy spinning setup that I use for the stuff you mentioned but I'm not going for crappy and bluegill.
>>

You really can't make it to a store?

Might be worth at least looking in stores and seeing what you like and if anything you can order the combo and size you like online if you can save money. Plus sometimes shipping on rods is a bit extra. And you are also going to need to figure out how to get the line spooled but you can probably do it yourself with the help of JewTube and /out/.

Anything that catches your eye online so far? We can reccommend which size to go with and maybe pros and cons or similar setups to whatever you are looking at.

I have owned one of these for a few years. Would reccommend.

I just want to add, you can't really go wrong buying anything from the major reputable brands, even if it is on the lower end as far as price. Shimano, Abu Garcia, Pflueger, Daiwa, Mitchell, Okuma, Quantum, etc. If you get a reel by any of these companies, you won't be disappointed. Even Bass Pro and Gander Mountain store brand reels aren't bad. They are always made by some other major manufacturer for them and a lot of times you can get good sales on the store brands.

If you're not sure about sizing when you do order it, just post it here. We can tell you which line to go with as well.

This one is 6'6", which is probably a better size for all-around. I think the 1pc was only available in 7'1" which isn't bad but might be a little big for learning with. Just don't want you to be breaking it on tree branches when you try and play with a 7'+ rod.

That Shimano reel is like a $70 reel anyway. They are nice man. So you are basically getting a decent rod for $10. If you were to order one tonight, I would get that one. Like I said, if I saw that combo in a size I liked in the store for $80, I would grab it whether or not I really needed it.

for what? you gonna be doing salt with it?

9wt might be overkill.

I use a 6wt for nymphing and bass, 8wt spey for saltwater

can't go wrong with any nymph, midge variation.

I can't really tell you what flies to get for freshwater, or nymphs, dries simply because its different everywhere you go, what works here in maine might not work where you are.

Streamers and attractors are easy, get anything that looks like a fish. Don't always get the biggest fly or streamer, it isn't about the size of the presentation so much as its mimicking the bait in the water.

I love streamers though, they are fun to cast, fun to retrieve and can take a decent beating.

Chances are there is a forum or website dedicated to fly fishing for your area, there is a community almost everywhere you go, and that is the best place for info on the internet.

Also look into local bug and bait species, and start searching for patterns that match those species

by patterns I mean different types of flies.

>that is a cool spot
It is, but it's right by the road so a lot of people will be there on nice days.

I tried just dropping the jig I had down in the foam a couple times. I would've changed to a worm, but I didn't feel like walking back to my car. I mostly just wanted to see how flooded it was. If it's still that high tomorrow I'll throw a worm on there.
>>
>>706571
One of my spots down the street has had a really high water level lately as well. It's right next to I-95 and this exit where they are doing construction. They are building stuff right over the canal that feeds into it and I think they may have blocked it off or something strange where this water level hasn't gone down in the past couple months like all the other spots. I need to look into it more, can't figure out why it is still so high yet the lake right across the street has gone down to normal levels since the rain we had in Dec and Jan.

Anyway it is kinda annoying because this really tall grass that was on the shore before is now under 1'-2' of water. So I have to cast over 5'-8' of brush and retrieve fish through it. But now some big logs and branches that were barely submerged are deeper underwater and it is deep right after the grass so it seems like bass like to chill there. I have gotten some nice ones there lately. Just sucks it is kinda difficult to fish through.

>>706575
I never knew that about the foam.
>>
>>706585
I never did either until I went brook trout fishing with a friend on really small water.

we were using ice fishing rods with no bobber, a size 22 hook and chunks of worm, he kept catching fish and I wasn't as we walked down the creek, he pointed out that i never dropped my worm in the foam on the sides of the eddies in the small creek, so i walked over, dropped my line in the foam and sure enough i had a little 6 inch brookie, in the late summer foam produces well. not sure about other species but it provided excellent cover for the brookies.

Pic related are these lakes. One on the north side of 10th St, they are doing construction for the I-95 off ramp so there is a bunch of construction equipment and shit on the far south end of this lake.

Lake just south of 10th St just keeps getting a little lower while the one on the north side remains high. Can't figure it out. Yellow line is where I normally fish. Pull my car into the grass right off the road and there are lots of trees hanging over the water. Plus I can cast to the other side.
>>
>>706588

The water is just high there because the dam is less than 1/4 mile upstream. It rained a shit ton today so the damn is being let out all the way. When the water level changes it always fucks me up because I can't quite remember where the cover is and where I need to avoid.

I wish there were canals and stuff where I live. Seems like fun to be able to try out a bunch of new spots relatively close.

Yeah changing water levels can be a pain in the ass.

Here we are zoomed out a little bit more. Red circle is the two lakes from the earlier post. Only problem is it's all urban area. So lots of these lakes are by homes or businesses and it's tricky finding out where I can fish without causing trouble. And some of the regular canals are real easy to fish from, just public land and trimmed grass. But I think some are overfished, and it can be hard to find good spots since there is really no cover in a canal that is dead straight for miles.

And if I take a little drive SW, there are so many more canals and lakes. Over where I run my route for work. I have been trying to explore those ones a little bit on the weekends.

the next post i make will be of the flies ive got (i found them in a little metal case near the rod, which i will post once i manage to get the thing apart, its a two piece thats been assembled for so long its a one peice, ive got the metal bits sitting with some 3in1 to loosen it a little hopefully)
