Asking this more of out of a hypothetical than concern. I've lived in Kansas all my life and have had many "close calls" living in central Kansas (salina), so I'm not really concerned about this one, but it popped a thought in my head.

Assume a Tornado is gonna wreck the shit out of my hometown. Would it do me any good if I were to tether myself to a solid structure like a toilet via climbing harness and line? Would it give me any advantage over just sitting in there waiting for it to pass?

+1 on the backpack idea like Mainebub said here >>748840. The actual fishing backpacks are sweet but get kinda pricey. You need to spend at least $50 to get a halfway decent ones and good ones are closer to $100.

Film canisters don't sound like a bad idea as long as you don't pop them open on accident. Maybe a pill bottle? But if you do a regular backpack, I still think a really small clear box with dividers...

31 KB,
Do you come across drug paraphernalia a lot?

I saw a syringe someone couldn't be bothered to throw out today; at least the person put the cap on. I really would not be all that surprised to find a one-pot meth lab (aka nasty 2L).

If people want to poison themselves, they can, it's a free country. But don't screw up the environment for those of us who want to keep living in it.

Wouldn't say "a lot", but yes. Happens once or twice a year.

Rode by what I'm fairly certain was a recent meth lab in the woods, maybe 100yds off a spur from a foresty-servicey road. Smelled something funky, rode a little further and there was a bunch of chemical bottles laying around that hadn't been there long.
Marked it in my GPS and nope'd outta there, fwd'd the coords to FS-LEO office.

Year or so later, out riding at night, stopped on that main FS road to take...

Hey /out/, figured I'd share a story.

I turned homeless in January. Like most others, I posted asking for advice. After careful deliberation, I disregarded it all.
I feel happier now than I have when I was working, and paying bills. It's such freedom. It was tough the first couple of weeks. I was homesick and cold, but I came around to the idea that the entire world is my home now.

I started out in Washington, and made my way down south. I ended up in a tiny town in Oregon, and it is gorgeous here. I started off by staying on BLM land, but I got chased...

I'm 25. and the only relationship I have is with my little doge. He's not good for much except warmth at night, and an alarm system. I kinda forsook human relationships, they are needlessly complicated and infuriating.

I work in construction.
Avoid the contruction that is mostly buildings. it's hard to explain, but in my country construction is separated into two things; Bygg and Anlegg (building and construction), so I'm not talking about the kind of construction that happens in urban places, but for example now the project we're working on is building a dam inna mountains.

You and a few friends are about to be sent back to stone age times. There are no other humans, and you can return home if you survive 5 years.

Before you leave, you have a limit of $500 to purchase supplies online. What do you choose to take with you?

Let's see who can come up with the best shopping list & strategy.

Hey. Me and my mates are semi-experienced wild campers. We've been on small trecks in the UK. We are well equipped and looking to venture into Europe.

We're respectful of the environment, so we're not so concerned about where is legal or not.

But are there any suggestions on picking a location? Preferably somewhere wooded, for obvious reasons (resources, concealment, weather).

tl;dr any advice on wild camping in Europe? Especially location suggestion.

Hey fellow sc/out/s

I'm taking my girl scouts hiking this weekend. Most of the time we'll spend on walking, making camp, cooking and finding fire wood.
Apparently this is boring.

What other activities could one prepare to liven things up?

Think about what they would answer when you ask the question "what would you like to do/learn tonight" Then educate yourself about all the possible answers, and come up with fun ideas relating to each answer. If all else fails, bring stuff to make smores with and tell stories? You could also try bringing some amethyst/quartz along and give them each a piece, make up some stuff about how rocks are special. You can keep their minds occupied!

Didn't see a thread about it so what about an /out/ essentials thread?

I'm getting into hiking and camping with 2 friends and we're planning on what gear to get. There's 3 of us so splitting the weight won't be a problem and for now it's just over the weekend. We all have experience from camping, hiking etc but now we don't have any gear left aside from clothing, a tent and 1 sleeping bag and shovel.

You're better off just getting a bag for it. Or building a case out of wood. Curved blades are a bitch to sheath.

I keep all my carving gouges/spoon knives in a little box I made that stores them all vertically. Essentially a lot of little cubby holes
>>
>>743836
sheath is to protect the cutting edge, not you.. in that case. Go to the hardware store and get a small length of plastic tubing, and cut a slit down the middle. or some of that black window screen spline. normally has a slit already premade down the middle of it. or you can get some of that protective floor mat, locks together with itself. its closed cell foam.. basically just carve a channel of your knifes shape into it, and use it as a box sorta?
>>
>>743841
1. This knife is razor sharp and I intend on maintaining that. 2. That curved tip would do its best to eviscerate said bag every time I try to pull it out.

I basically wrapped duct tape around it into a ball for the time being but it looks ghetto as fug. Shame, this tool would be great for taking out into the woods and carving out spoons from green wood, but the shape is almost too wacky to take /out/.
