Question to the UL folks, I need a lightweight shelter that can cope with high winds and stormy weather such. but I am 6'7" (202cm) plus I got a mid sized dog with me.
IS the MLD Duomid XL a good choice?
>also UL General
>>747279
you're the size of a packhorse and you have a miniature packhorse with you
why UL?
>>747301
Because 12+ days trek with no resupply points == lots of food to carry, so it'd be wise to bring the base weight down.
>>747305
Sleep inside the dog.
Who else lives in the most /out/ state?
I do and here's some ocean.

One day I'll have to get down to the coast. Interior is nice and all, but I want to see Anchorage.

Is there a water filter that won't break if exposed to sub-freezing temperature?
>>746253
carbon, rocks, sand and a plastic container.
>>746253
so... an ice filter?
just melt and boil your ice you dumbass
will a girl kiss me if I can filter things in cold weather?
What walks have you completed/planned for?
I really want to do the Pacific Northwest Trail next year. It's not as long as the PCT or AT, but it crosses over 4 mountain ranges and ends at the Pacific ocean. Something like 50 people through hike it each year.
Gotta get better at orienteering though, cause it's a newer trail and big sections of it are unmarked/unmaintained.
>>746004
Nice, If I could ever get a few months off I'd go over to the US to do the appalacian trail.
I walked to the laundromat
Later I plan on walking to work
What is the best bang for buck /out/ waterbottle?
What do you guys use?
I was thinking of getting this klean kanteen, but idk.
>must be stainless steel
>wide mouthed preferable
>must be able to be tossed in a fire for water boilage
Also a cup to protect from heat when pulling out of the fire would be nice
>>745074
You answered your own question. A stainless steel or aluminum bottle because it serves a double purpose. Just don't fall for a brand and get whatever is cheap, because you'll be throwing it into the fire at some point.
I wouldn't pay $70 for a water container btw. That's plain stupidity.
>>745074
That's a big bottle, wouldn't you rather have two smaller ones?
>>745074
The bottle that you have pictured is an insulated bottle and would be destroyed if you put it in the fire...
I've noticed there's a few Canadians that use /out/ and I was wondering if any of you know of some decent crown land around the GTA? I know there's that map thing but its pretty hard to navigate. Any info will be appreciated!
>>745026
i dunno, have you tried navigating her crown?
>>745026
It's not hard at all to navigate, you Americans are just inferior and cannot assimilate simple technology
>>745093
So do you know of any decent crown land?
So /out/ recently I got asked a question
>So anon what are you good at
We were drunk so I sidestepped the question but I realized I have no talents besides doing well in school, drinking and video games.
I am 24 I don't want to waste any more of my youth. I've travelled some but it's expensive and hard to get a group. I go to raves and music festivals but that's just more drinking drugs and empty happiness.
I need a hobby, whether it be sports hiking, surfing w/e and I want something I can get good...

travel europe by yourself
>budget
>plan the trip
>work on some farms/pick fruit
>acquire a lot of independence
also, go to community centers and read the boards
there is always something there. might be a club, an event, a team, a charity, or anything
>>743870
>plan the trip
I don't even know what to plan, what season should I go during? What countreis? How do I find places to sleep and for that matter work like you said.
And how long should I go for? How much money should I have saved up?
I'm only asking because I'm an idiot on this crap, your post is helpful and thank you very much, I wouldn't have even known about working on farms, but I don't know where to find them.
I had a friend who...

try
might be hard to imagine, but you do have the ideas and creativity to plan an awesome trip. Just need to get yourself excited and off your butt
pick a starting point and start researching from there. You might start out in the UK and somehow end up in finland a few hours later.
I am not sure where to find the seasonal farm work or just general farm hand. But it is cheaper than a hostel and you have a place to stay for a while.
explore
you will end up finding a lot of really interesting...

>WATERPROOF
I wonder how waterproof they actually are.
>>742064
I am amused
>>742140
They cost $160 dollarydoos, for that price I'm assuming those sandals are pretty watertight

I fucking hate these things. My wife is obsessed with them. She bought me a pair and I made the mistake of actually wearing them.

Oo la la
I saw a thread a while ago here where people talked about what they usually prepare, pack, cook, eat when outside.
Let's share with our recipes, methods, etc...
I usually tend to bring dehydrated food. Instant oatmeal, dried fruit, nutmix, chocolate, protein bars, canned meat and vegetables, rice, pasta.
>>735521
Depends on season and location. I usually go on fishing trips so i never bring anything meat related - because fish.
Maybe some veggies like 1 potato 1 carrot 1 onion and a dehydrated chicken stock cube to make a soup or stew. Usually take whit me that what i can not easily acquire in the location. There are situations where i can get wild forest garlic that tastes like garlic but consists of leafs - but its very rare and needs to be left where it is so this specie wouldnt die out completly. Some ramen is always in...

actually fish were finickey af today, only 10 fish over 3-4 hours of fishing
yesterday i got 13 plus a bunch of missed fish (10+)
i think it was because it got cold af last night
Question for my fellow braid users- when doing a leader strictly for visibility purposes, how long do you normally go?
I do ~3' most of the time. This rod has 10lb moss green on it anyway, I really should be tying a leader to the one with 15lb red line.
Fishing Forecast: April 28, 2016
It's a bluefish bonanza going on in New Jersey! Shops across the region are reporting numerous catches with some fish weighing into the high teens.
Long Island anglers are finding the local waters full of bait. The predators are hungry and following their prey; stripers, bluefish, and even weakfish are being caught in the shallows.
Farther north in New England, Rhode Island's tautog bite is heating up and the light-tackle striped bass action has picked up in the Connecticut tidal rivers. In Massachusetts, schoolie stripers...

How do you walk silently through the woods?
I have been wondering about this for a while, and the other day when I was /out/ hiking in the national forest close to my house, I was questioning if it was even possible.
I can't walk through any section that isn't rocks or a pre-established path without sounding like I'm just crashing through every branch and undergrowth in the entire damn forest.
So how do you guys walk silently or at least quietly through leafy woods?
I wear crocs, they're not silent but a good style to noise ratio.
Be low to the ground and roll your feet
Stick to the trees, human.
