181 KB,
In my local area I just have state parks that are simply for trails and daytime use.

While I understand it's probably agasint the rules, how do I get away with an overnight camp, obviously off trail and how do I park there overnight without a cop or ranger passing by and clearly knowing a dudes camping somewhere in the park?
I'd assume they could simply give a ticket on the car.

Try looking for a national preserve or forest. They are typically your best bet for backwoods camping.
>>
>>765210
You sure you can't camp there? Park closed maybe means that you can't get in past sunset, but it doesn't says you can not camp there.

Do you like hiking/camping with full gear (yet know how to pack light, what you need/don't need) and consider 10 miles per day to be amateur stuff?

If so, a whole lot of wild areas become accessible that otherwise are very hard to get to.

If you have friends who will keep their mouths shut, get them to drop you off at a start location and have a time and place for them to pick you up later.

Carry something that makes you sweat if you stood still in the cold with it on.

Carry something...

I have found a few patches of thimbleberries (Rubus parviflorus) while hiking in the woods of western Oregon. That's a nice surprise. Salmonberries and blackberries are the most common finds, though. Anyone else feast on berries as much as possible while /out/?

Wow those are in Oregon? When I go up to my grandparents place in Minnesota I eat them all I can. I thought they were raspberries!
>>
>>764948
I think they're actually most prevalent around Michigan and the upper Midwest. They aren't that common in Oregon, but they're around. If you go off-trail, you will occasionally see them.

I like them better than raspberries for the most part. They have smaller "drupes" (the individual segments surrounding each seed) and tend to have a slightly sharper flavor.
>>
I'll chow down on blackberries and dewberries when I see them. We have a lot of wild strawberries around here too but I've never tried any (I'm not a fan of garden variety strawberries so I can't imagine that the wild varieties would taste any better to me).

A russula of some kind. Probably russula rosea. Probably not poisonous but not edible either.

I swear those things home in on boats and fishermen in particular because they know you can't escape in short order.
Bug spray, long sleeves and a mesh hood, try some of those clip on insect repellent things. No idea if permethrin works but it's good practice to have an outer layer with that shit on it for the sake of ticks anyway, don't use it if you have cats.

Really though, there's no 100% avoiding it, but on the upside biting flies in NA don't tend to carry or transmit diseases to humans unlike mosquitoes and gnats. If it's just black and sand flies be grateful that the horse and stable flies have other targets in mind.

So for a few weeks now there's been a snake roaming around my dad's store. A couple of employees and customers have seen it but have not been able to take a picture of it and identify it.

Here's a picture of its skin that it shed yesterday. Can someone identify it based on its shed skin? Is it venomous?

Also this is in College Station, Texas

Probably this, the pattern on the back is fairly visible. Maybe a corn snake.

Not venomous, not dangerous. Eats rodents. Total snake-bro.

Cut across country 6-8 miles as the crow flies into town, found what I'm fairly sure was an illegal mine and is now an illegal dump site by the looks of some of the biohazard looking barrels.

A lot of city folk moving into some of the quainter parts around here lately, they're all severely suspicious, private and standoffish, I think due to the stories of thievery and shenanigans my area is associated with plus just the general city mindset, it saddens me to see such misgiving about a lone man in the fields, and such a lack of community mindedness, fucking city...

I'll start. So I'm looking for a cheap sleeping mat and have found a couple. One's a folding egg carton design, and the other is self inflating.

Which one is better? Is the folding one going to be complete shit or would it be ok?

self inflating:

folding:

It would depend on the type of terrain you camp most of the time. Inflating pads get a bad reputation because people are not carefull. I have had the same chinese brandless one for 10+ years and never had an issue with it, and I camp over rocks in mountain terrain most of the time.

That being said, I know that when it gets a puncture it will be while I camp, probably during the night and it will be a pain in the ass to fix that thing, so I am looking for something like the folding one you posted. Besides the fact...

Anybody know the laws of their country regarding camping and the laws around camping activities?(gathering firewood, bushcraft,..)

I know for Belgium that you can't go wild camping and have to go to a designated camping place full of dutch hicks. Also if you want to hunt or fish you'll need a season permit.

I'm wondering what the laws are in neighbouring countries, especially France and Germany with their big forests.

Hey /out/. So a while back I was watching a bush craft video claiming that a certain plant could be found that when put in water kills fish and causes their bodies to float up. It's been a while and am not sure which video it was, (nor did I find it with a google search.)(Though I think it was an alfie aesthetics video). So I was wondering if anyone of you knew what the plant is. Thanks for the help

this is something i was interested in as well, and ive seen that many different peoples from different parts of the world used different plants to the same effect. so i think its the properties of the plant that are important.

there is yucca, and some rainforest root. the commonality is the liquid from both create this dense, foggy, sudsy substance. so the effect might not be so much that there is a poison in the plant, but the properties displace properties of the water that make it uninhabitable for fish. perhaps making respiration impossible. i think if you follow that line of reasoning, youll find the properties necessary to fish with whatever is available that shares said properties
