Hey /out/, I'm a young English lad who's planning a big America road trip with my chum. A place we definitely want to check out when we're in Oregon is Crater Lake National Park. I've had a good look at this place on Google Earth and a read a bit about it online but I was just wondering if it's possible to get to Wizard Island and hike to the top of it.

From what I can tell this area circled in red looks like it's fairly shallow water and it also doesn't appear to be a long distance (could be wrong though, I've never been here...

have to take the boat, but it drops you off and you can hike to the top of wizard island.

if you're planning on camping there (at the park, can't sleep on the island) you'll need to make your reservations at least 3-6 months in advance, depending on how busy a time of year you're planning on coming.

last time i went was in december about 6 years ago and it was full whiteout conditions. 100' visibility. 9+ feet of snow. it was awesome.
>>
seeing it in the snow sounds awesome but we'll probably be going there during the summer. We don't plan on camping there (although now you mention it that doesn't sound like a bad idea) it was probably just going to be a one day thing.

Also could I just ask, where is the dock where you catch the boat? and is it at all expensive?

yeah, i wouldn't recommend winter for your first visit. it was an interesting change from when i'd been in the summer

You come to this board to LARP?

Somewhat but mostly to gain information.

I don't do much out stuff myself so i feel kinda out of place here.

That's fine. You don't have to do /out/ stuff. People who are simply interested are more than welcome in my opinion.

Hey thanks for the help about the open faced reel. I have the anti reverse switch flipped but I think the problem is I have shitty line coupled with the fact that I'm new to using these types of reels. I need to respool it anyways because I didnt put enough line on it the first go around.

Single bit or double bit?

Explain your reasoning.
33 replies and 5 images submitted. Click here to view.
>>
>>771641
single all the way. more useful tool, better ergos and you actually feel where the head is directed at..

double bit is kind of retarded, worse balance and all. in theory you need to sharpen it less frequently and that is supposedly a pro. so grind the two bits to different angle.
>>
>>771647
*some grind
>>
>>771647
the double bit is also heavier, which would be a plus for working lumbermen, opposed to your average self employed wildman

How does one even start getting into hunting? I live in SoCal so I've never even seen a civilian with a gun let alone someone hunting. I feel like without family or friends who hunt it's extremely difficult to get into.

>>
>>769852
Well you should start with fishing then, then like buy a gun... then let nature take its course
>>
>>769852
I had the same problem when I started hunting. No family to teach me.

Start by doing research on techniques. Read books about hunting and animal behavior, watch videos on YouTube, learn how to gut and clean your game once you catch it, learn how to cook it.

Once you have some book smarts, buy a .22 (savage MKII is an affordable and extremely accurate rifle. Buy a Nikon Rimfire scope as well) and start small game hunting. Start with squirrels and rabbits and stick to that until you are comfortable and efficient in processing your kills.

Good luck

Dear /out/, I want to hike to the deep end of nowhere and build a raft to return home. There will be two-three male-female pairs of us. We can bring cordage, saws, axes, etc, and are planning to chop down trees on the spot or use dead ones. Temperate, swampy region, minimal civilization (less than Deliverance), it'll either be lightly flooded or dried out.

Does anyone have any experience with this?

Also we could drop by a lumbermill for wood but we'll have to haul it for 15 km through woods.

Not very wide or deep, quite mellow. No rapids, slow current.

How do you overcome your fear of being vulnerable while camping in the forest

The slightest sound - a falling tree branch or a scurrying animal - sends my mind racing and keeps me up until sunrise

Pls help anon

Bring a knife/gun

Idk man
>>
You don't. It's part of the experience.
>>
>>768842
But you are vulnerable. Why do you want to sugar coat your existence. Embrace that shit and start enjoying every little sound made by every little creature or thing around you. What I do is try to think of the circumstances. This bird is singing right here and now, why? That branch sound, why? It will help you understand the world around you and you'll fall madly in love with the outdoors.

Honda and Yamaha are both real tough to beat. Fuel, oil change once a year, and it'll run.

What are you powering with it?
2kW is a good size for most applications where you need a generator. AC units, you'll need more power (or parallel two 2kW units).

I have two Generac iX2000's. Got them used for super-cheap. One works great, other not so much. Think i've narrowed it down to stator windings on the one that doesn't work, just haven't taken the time to go through it in...

Why? what for?

why not a harbor freight generator? even there 7000 running watt is only 600 dollars. And inb4 you say those pred engines are shit. they are honda clones, as long as you aren't a complete fuck nuts and can change an airfilter/oil and empty the gastank/carb before going into storage, should have no problems. the fuel lines are kinda craptastic, but will last easily 2 years without problems.

Trail mix?

For me, it's easier to carry and eat. I can stash the bars in any one of a dozen places & eat it with one hand as opposed to having a large bag of loose pieces that can spill, etc.
>>
just turn your GORP into a bar by mixing it with some peanut butter and honey and rolling it out and wrapping it in parchment paper

I did not like it at all. Totally down to luck, not realistic (for example you should be able to harvest wood from a small cabin you have no use for but instead have to wander around through all the trees and other fallen wood until you find a loot container with wood).

Last I played it there was also really only about 2 hours of gameplay before you've done everything.

Hello /out/,

I need a tent for a festival, help me choose the right one. I've been thinking about pic related but I'm on a budget, I want to know is it worth the price? The tent itself is just the right size, me, my gf, and enough room to dump all our gear. The festival is 5 days, and most likely it will rain, I've been going to that particular one every year since 2012 and only one of them wasn't a total pool of water; So I guess I need a tent that's irrefutably waterproof, that's probably the most important part. Another thing is, I don't...

Big Agnes is a pretty well known backpacking brand so their tents would probably work well for festival use. I need a good festy tent myself. The trusty old Coleman I had got wrecked last year.
