first and foremost, use your head.
small mistakes can grow.
Going fishing tomorrow on the Surfside pier in Myrtle Beach south carolina tomorrow. I hope to catch some spanish mackeral and will be using all the gotcha plugs and spoons I own to that end. I'm also taking some friends who have never fished saltwater before, and only rarely fish freshwater, so I'm setting them up with some bottom rigs with shrimp. I figure one of us will find out what's biting.
Pier/surf fishing thread? Pier/surf fishing thread.
Btw, got waaaay too close to a shark on a sandbar about 300 yards from shore while surf fishing last weekend,...

You coulda just said "bump". I am stoked at all the fishing threads however.

I'm about to go grab a big Penn Fierce combo from Bass Pro and start getting out to the pier at 4am when there aren't so many people around.
When rigging the shrimp on the bottom, how do you set it up? The couple times I did the pier, I just ended up using big pyramid weights and some frozen squid but no real luck. Are shrimp much better?

It needs to be Friday already so I can fish all day. I think I should quit my job and try to work on a fishing charter.
Pls stop trolling and giving shitty advice to newcomers. At least on purpose. Also, pls let the baby strippers live so they can grow to be tasty 30"+ feesh.

permethrin is for chumps.
cigar smoke works well, too, but is less than ideal when /out/ and about.
Anyone have any close encounters with predators in the wild when you weren't carrying?
>saw a wolf on a trail when I was walking my dog. Dog was going nuts barking, wolf just stared at us for half a minute or so and moved on. Was about 25 feet in front of us.
>was biking on the highway when a bear came charging out of the woods right beside me. I thought it was chasing me and I almost pissed myself. It turned around though went back in the woods.
Anyone been close to a cougar in the wild?

I'll be doing a lot of backpacking this summer and I like to bring chicken jerky. But store-bought is expensive so I want to make my own. Does anybody have experience with this? Does home-made jerky last long? Can anybody recommend a dehydrator that's not too expensive? Any other tips on homemade jerky would be appreciated too, thanks.
>>768856
chicken?
a cheap option is to use ground beef formed into strips/patties; got a cheap dehydrator at a garage sale, they're the kind of thing people use a few times then don't want to justify keeping
I've just let it sit for 12-24hrs with seasoning and curing salt, never had any go bad....but that's cause I ended up eating it
>>768856
Don't use ground beef. That's absolutely fucking retarded. Eye of bottom or basically any cheap cut of meat does well. I have a Hamilton Beach dehydrator and it's great. I've used it almost every day for the past year and I wish I had bought one sooner. You can dehydrate veggies, fruit, herbs, soup, pemmican, and fruit leather aka fruit roll ups. Home made beef jerky lasts for a very long time if stored properly. I'd wager years.
>>768985
it's absofuckintootley not
Have any of you come across these stupid things on hikes? There's a whole trend online with people stacking rocks for "meditation" and get this, there are professional stone stackers.
I've tried telling people to stop doing this, but just get met with "durr the trails ruin nature there's nothing bad about stacking rocks!" Like, people get vehemently defensive about them.
What are your thoughts, /out/?
>>760108
What the fuck? Hope you kicked them op
Here comes the trigger train
>>760114
Of course. Unfortunately those things are fucking hydras, kick one down and two more spring up somewhere else in the world.
what's your favourite rifle to take /out/?
Tough choice but I'd say my SKS, fun to shoot and provides animal protection if needed
.50 cal anti-materiel, in case of deathclaws.
>>731453
That's a tough call anon.
I don't really enjoy target shooting in the bush/outside of a range, but my Mossberg 500 has felled many a grouse and hare. It's a workhorse that is with me for about 1/2 the year. I'd give it the nod, but my Winchester 70 in .30-06 is what I really look forward to packing. Goddamn I can't wait for September.
Any tips on making my own bike and where to buy parts? Just looking for something casual.
>>776245
Coming from a former BMX rider, it's going to get expensive doing that. Better to buy a complete with a decent frame and upgrade stuff as you see fit.
Also,
>>>/n/
>>776265
about how much? I was under the impression buying parts and making one yourself was a lot cheaper.
>>776266
Idk what it will be like for a fixie or road bike, but with BMX, you could spend $700 on a really nice complete bike. To build almost the same bike using individual parts at full retail, you will probably end up spending like $1100-$1400.
A BMX mailorder company called DansComp used to sell a kit with everything besides the frame so you could buy your own frame and get the kit for another $300-$500, but a lot of the major parts were mediocre in the kit and you can't really get specific sizes you want.

The CRKT C/K Dragon
It's a nice knoife, don't get me wrong. And I got it on clearance for <$30 so whatever. But I'm not really a collector and the Dragon is too big for an EDC on my belt. And then I thought about using it as a tackle bag knife, but I think I prefer the Kershaw I have since the blade is better for chopping.
>>775967
Don't lie, that is dope
>>775964
Sorry, that was a shitty pic
Here it is next to the little EDC SPEW (no ragrets on that one even at full price) and the $17 Kershaw which I keep in my tackle bag.
Hey ya'll!
I am aware it isn't the best idea to eat fish from dirty water.
Is this the case for frog legs?
I'm looking to catch a few to eat some fresh frog legs but I want to make sure frogs don't get contaminated from dirty water.
The place where I plan to catch them has some very murky water and many of the fish I catch in those water have those black spot parasites in em'
Any experience with frog legs and frog hunting?

you wouldn't happen to go by the name Doc Hopper by any chance, would you?
Do you guys use one of these? I was shopping for a new daypack and started looking at them. I like the idea of hands-free sipping.
sometimes.
on a long multipitch i like being able to drink mostly hands free while i'm belaying, but i HATE not being able to see how much water i have left/how fast i'm drinking. and they're a nightmare to refill while backpacking, because you have to unpack half your shit to get it back in the pack.
and unless for some reason i need to carry a lot of water, i pretty much prefer just a couple bottles for day hikes (again, can't easily see how much you've drunk)
>>775039
Ah, I didn't consider how much of a pain it would be to refill on the trail. I was thinking I'd still carry my Nalgenes like usual plus this thing to use while trekking.
>>775044
i made that mistake exactly once. never again.
i have a 3L one, and, like i said, i'll use it sometimes for climbing (long alpine routes or if it's really hot), i use it if i know i'm going to drink between 2 and 3L. if 2L or less i just carry 2 bottles, if more than 3L i carry 2 bottles and refill them. or if i know i need 5L+ i'll bring it because it distributes the load well (hang against the back instead of shuffling to the bottom of the pack). otherwise it stays at home.

I have been testing my backpack(pic related) through various durability tests and scoring it. I have rated out of 10 for each criteria. Here is my criteria:
1)Fill with water and see how long it takes to dry out in the sun
>6/10
2)Jerk the zippers back and fourth as hard as possible
>3/10
3)Fill with sand and rocks to see what it can hold
>8/10
4)Drop heaviest knife from shoulder height to make sure canvas is tough
>7/10
5)Hold...
