Ask an anon who spent the last 2 weeks hiking/canoeing Voyageurs NP anything.

Currently seeking respite from mayfly swarms for a couple of days at the Kettle Falls hotel. Future plans include catching walleye, and illegally canoeing into Canada and shitting on one of their islands. Fuck Canada!

What the hell is this red dragonfly? I have never seen one like it.

>>779042
Are those clouds of them just over the water or what? Never actually seen (or payed any attention to) a hatch.
>>
>>779058
Dunno. Probably I would call it a red dragonfly until some local corrected me.

Yes clouds of them hover over shorelines for a few days. When I got here there were none, then about a week ago they started up, peaking on Thursday. They are almost gone now.

post what you want/need or generally what are good products you've tried. im looking to buy a good filter system for the money and ive already tried the lifestraw, it was kind of a pain to use. What products do you guys recommend?

Unless you're filtering for multiple people those sawyer minis are the best. I bring a little adapter with mine so I can clean it without bringing the giant syringe. Like with any mechanical filter, don't rely on it below freezing.

But don't they work fairly slowly? I've read on the site that the sawyer squeeze goes a fair bit faster, but everyone seems to own the mini. What's up with that?

Is there really much of a difference between clothing designed for going /out/ vs workwear clothing designed for labourers who work outdoors? It seems the moment something is marketed towards camping or outdoor recreation the price shoots up to profit off of the clueless rich people demographic. Would I not be better off just buying construction clothing from a DIY store?

Clothes designed for going out are often designed to be lightweight. Unfortunately it is expensive. My rain jacket is ultralight und ultraexpensive, but I carry it in my backpack most of the time. So I go with my 248g waterproof jacket, instead of the cheaper one I have, that weighs around 1000g. Thats more than half a kilo less weight, on a single piece of gear.
Merino underwear and shirts cost a fortune, but the quality is so much better than regular cotton shirts.

But I am no bushcrafter, I go trekking and sleep in a tent. I don't do ultralight trekking but...

What do you guys put in your first aid kits?
21 replies and 1 images submitted. Click here to view.

hemostatic stuff, bandages, sterile gauze, antibacterial stuff, things to keep wounds closed, medications for various things, leeches, lobotomy needle

I dont make mine. Go to a school bus at night and take the first aid kit from behind the driver seat. Has everything you will need sometimes even an epipen which is nice for trauma. School buses are always unlocked the door just slides open. Dont worry, they just get replaced upon safety inspection so no harm done by you getting a free quality med kit.

What's the Longest you've ever hiked in one day /out/?

I had a day off yesterday so I decided to go for a hike through my city's interconnected trail network

ended up hiking 31 km / 19 miles

It was really fun, but it was a fuckin workout towards the end. Calves are pretty sore and the balls of my feet are all swollen.

Did 54 miles in one day once walking down train tracks. Did a cozy 25 miles per day every day after that for about a week. Gah, I think I can still feel my feet from that and it was 10 years ago.

Yeah, I was on a lot of good drugs that lead you to walk quickly for hours and hours and hours

what were you doing for food and water?

Pop tarts and jerky and shit and refilling water bottle anytime the train tracks crossed a town or a creek. If youre moving as fast as I was you get more than a few opportunities to do this.

91% isopropyl alcohol and sand paper.

Im not joking. Sand down the first layer of skin then apply rubbing alcohol soaked rags. Let it sit. Yes it burns like fuck. You will not have poison ivy the next day. This is the most nuclear way to kill poison ivy.

Just got these pegs with a bivy I bought online. There incredibly light but they shouldn't bend too easily, right? Better than the standard steel L shape peg? Snugpak should be quality gear, right?

Depends. I've had some that come with a kelty tarp and they bent cause I was drunk and tried to force it. Just don't be a nincompoop and you'll be fine.
>>
>>772762
Yeah, going to be cold and wet where I'm going so I figure if I don't try and belt it into a rock, it should be ok.
Just got a shock when I felt how light they are.
>>
What you should be worried about is not that they bend; you are worried that they stay in the ground. The wind wont bend these. Only a hammer or your own hands will bend these.

Is a side arm suggested for going /out/ in AK? If so, what kind

Yes. Not /k/ here but not bringing a gun /out/ is risky. Spooky shit happens in the woods.

It's really up to preference. Do you want to conceal it? Do you need it to possibly defend against large animals like bears? I would go with a .45 to be safe. I like revolvers because they're less tacticool and nothing beats them for reliability.

As for animals, only use your gun as a last resort. You should carry bear spray which works better than a firearm anyways. No need to kill an animal for being...

I just finished a 2 week trip on the Kenai Pennisula doing a couple short backpacking trips and lots of day hikes.

We did not see a sinlge bear or have any trouble with any people. In fact we hardly saw people on the trails, except near Anchorage and everyone was nice as fuck. At a campground north of Seward a bear hunter said he was having a hard time finding bears beacuse most were within the city limits looking for food this time of year.

I chose not to bring my revolver and just had bear spray, which...

I always keep a firearm on me out in the woods, less about bears and more just in case I run into any violent methheads which is honestly far more likely of a scenario than a bear/animal attack. Still, I use a 10mm Glock 29 since it does have the power to take down black bear.

In AK you're dealing with grizzlies so I'd probably recommend a good bear spray and at least a .44 mag revolver.

They don't have to be very healthy or ultralight, just reasonable to carry in a backpack and make in the field.
