Going camping in a couple of days and decided a swag is more suited to my style than tents - do you guys have any swag related advice?

I was thinking about grabbing this before I head out: http://www.anacondastores.com/camping-hiking/tents/swags/dune-boundary-swag/p/BP90028928

Sorry, I thought bivvies and swags were interchangeable.

I'm just looking for something simple, light and wind / water proof. I guess I'm extending my search to bivvies, can anyone vouch for a good manufacturer?

Only looking to spend a couple of hundred dollars, I'm looking for something fast and simple so I can be on the move.

At least the other people are standing far enough back and there's nothing dangling off the person running the saw.

Is there really no safety course at all?

5 KB,
Hey /out/
Going on my first back packing trip later this summer to the tetons. Have a completely clean slate when it comes to gear so want to do this thing right from the beginning. What would you guys reccomed in the way of tent, sleeping bag and mat, as well as pack? And any other items that would make life better that I may not know about? Will be 5 days of hiking in total.

Honestly? But as little as you can, borrow everything possible (not shoes but everything else) If you're going to stick to trails then old running shoes would do as long as they are still an all right shape.
It's a huge waste to dump thousands of dollars into gear while you don't know if you like it yet, it's not for everyone.
I have friends who loved LOVED to go on the first hike with me, only to break down after 1-2 days and never go hiking again.

Buying everything before your first...

Good point, don't really know anyone I can borrow from though. I spent 4 years in the Marines so I have the experience of hiking long distance heavy weight day after day, and being out in the field. But that was all structured to wear it's just do as your told so much easier. But I enjoyed the non military aspects of it enough too feel pretty confident it's something I'd like to...

79 KB,
I'm looking to spend a weekend at a bothy in Wales sometime in the next month or so.
I've never stayed in one before and I'm a bit nervous about turning up to one to find it's full of people from one group partying it up and looking like a weirdo.

Can anyone share their bothy experiences to put my mind at ease?

I think they're more popular in Scotland than in Wales though.

There was one guy on here to stayed in one. Said he spent a whole month there without seeing a single person, if I recall correctly. And yes, his was in Scotland.

I want to go /out more and so I was thinking of buying a proper knife for that.
Up until now, i used my Victorinox Hunter and I also own a Fiskars X7 Axe, which i occasonally bring along.

So for the new one... First i thought ESEE izula 2 but i reckon it's just a bit small. What about a ESEE 3? something like that...

What would you recommend? specifically when it comes to sizes...

If you want to go /out/ more, then go /out/ more. You will figure out what equipment you should buy as the need arises.

Don't buy it as a toy and don't use wanting to go /out/ more as an excuse to buy a new toy. Nobody can tell you which knife to buy without knowing what you'll be using them for and what cutting needs you'll encounter.

That being said, some real advice:

You already have a hatchet so you don't need anything big enough for chopping or >batoning, but you already figured that out. I have an Izula II and it's...

72 KB,
Hey guys, I was thinking about buying a uv-5r because they have good reviews etc. I don't know anything about radios but it's not rocket science so I guess I can learn. My question is, what's your experience with these type of devices while /out/, will they actually help you if things go south or they are just memes. Do you need to pack an extra anthena and extra batteries so they would work?

Uv5rs are nice because they are cheap. But they are cheap because they are bare bones. You are going to need some knowledge to use it. And the programing cable to name channels. And a general license to talk on the 2 meter and 70 cm bands.

I don't recommend doing it but i have a friend;^) that set his up with the important marine freqs and the frs, gmrs and murs freqs. And all the noaa freqs.

So his little 35 dollar uv5r is essentially a marine radio a frs/murs/gmrs radio and a weather radio on top...

26 KB,
The time has come again. I'm going on my... third or fourth homeless hitch hike. I wont go into my story of why I'm doing this. This isn't my personal blog and I know none of you care.

What are the best states to do this in? I was thinking Florida because winter is tolerable there.

So, what I'm asking is, best states to be homeless/off the grid in? Thanks in advance.

Super perfundo to you on the early eve of your day.
