Got to my big bass lake a little too early today, and just managed to get one medium sized largemouth before the heat and wind got to me. Damn wind shifted and I didn't want to walk half a mile around the lake to get the wind at my back.
Then went to the peacock lake and once again crystal clear water and picky fish make it impossible to actually catch them. Got some nibbles on a lizard and some shots at those KVD™...

My birthday is coming up and my wife has no idea what to get me, so she said pick something out.
Thoughts on a Jetboil stove? I currently use a $10 etekcity amazon.com stove, it's lasted a year, but the legs have loosened up enough that my pot has trouble staying on. It also iseems pretty loud and uses quite a bit of fuel. I've fixed it once, but there's not much fixing to it.
Any other items around $100 that are not necessary, but can be very useful? Something you've wanted but don't want to spend $100 on?

Once got "lost" while "fishing" with a friend.
There was supposed to be this headwater near Covington, MI with good fishing but it had shitty access. It was a 30 min hike one way with giant constant up and down hills and heavy tree cover.
It really wasnt that bad looking back on it. We werent much more than an hour or two hike from 141 or 41. But I wanted to gtfo because the fishing wasnt good, the sun was setting, and my friend had drunk up all my water.

My gf and I have 4 days off work this Thursday thru Sunday. We live in LA.
We have permits to go overnight backpacking to 1000 island lake in the eastern sierras. We started talking about just taking off and instead of going to 1000 island lake just throwing our gear on the truck and go explore without a set plan. I always wanted to visit Oregon. The farthest north I've been is Big Sur.
We have to be back on Sunday night and I'd like to camp outside at least one night. We can start driving Wednesday night and drive through the night taking shifts.
Any reccomendations?

I'm in Pooland for holiday and I've had a chance to finally start backpacking, since I usually spend my life 60mi of London where "large outdoors spaces" is a thing old sages talk about. Anyways, I go for a small walk in the woods and notice it is chock full of boar tracks, as well as what I thought is likely either large stray dogs or wolves.
How worried should I be about boar or wolf attacks? Anyone from Europe carry something for self defense from wildlife?
Wolves don't really attack humans unless it's a very hungry winter and there is nothing else to eat. Even then they usually attack little kids or old people. Stray/feral dogs can be a problem, but often just yelling at them and pretending you are an invulnerable badass makes them back off.
Boars can be aggressive and unpredictable, but generally avoid people.
I wouldn't worry about boars/wolves, I would be slightly worried about feral dogs, but I doubt there are packs of them in polan. Get pepper spray just in case, climb a tree if a boar is upset about you, yell and spray if you meet feral dogs.

I've always wanted to load up with a ridiculous amount of water, some whiskey, all the obvious camping supplies, and my guns and drive out from Missouri to a desert out west. I want to be able to be out in the middle of the desert with nobody around for miles and miles, just plink my guns at targets, and enjoy the scenery and atmosphere. I've always had a strong allure to the desert in general.
However, the only deserts I'm familiar with that are public and allow camping are the Mojave and Death Valley, which either prohibit firearm discharge for anything...

Just got back from a trip up in the mountains and it was the first time I've ever not stayed in the tent / under the tarp during a rainstorm. I got soaked to the bone even with a nice layer of water resistant jacket, which brings me to ask, what is the best - or your favorite - rain shell?
I was looking into the North Face 'Venture', but I'm afraid to buy TNF because it seems pretty meme tier. Pic related.

Frogg Toggs brü. They have an option for every budget, a good selection of colors and camo patterns, /fa/ and not-/fa/ designs, and they're affordable.
Problem with designer coats like your pic is that they try to be all-in-one (warm, breathable, water resistant, /fa/shionable, cumpfy, etc) so they're never super great when conditions go bad. I've been a fan of Toggs for awhile now and have done lots of research/review watching, visited stores that sell them to get a hands-on look at the different materials, etc.
I've just bought the "All Sport" suit, which is one of their mid-tier designs. It's not rubber so it breathes, and it's guaranteed to be 100% water proof. It's a soft fabric-like material and it's quite comfortable. They have lighter ones (that I think are more a membrane and might not breathe as well - also wouldn't be good for cold weather) but they have heavier stuff and fancier expensive materials too.
You can get the suit from Amazon or Dicks or whatever for around $35, cheaper if you just want the coat. But take a look at their full line, some good shit.

I actually sorta facepalmed myself a while back for not picking up one of their jackets while it was on sale at the Cabelas I work near, they were getting rid of their stock for %60 off or something, they were only $14. Wish I would have grabbed one.
I am looking for something that will be light weight and compressible, how do the Toggs fair in that department? I'm doing a lot of backpacking this year and the main range I go to rains almost every other day, even in dry seasons, and this year is seeming to be pretty wet.
