1 MB,
So I want to spend the week /out/, but I'm used to warm weather. Here's what I've got:

Knife, camelbak, dirty bag, Sawyer mini, duct tape, salt.

Everdry (dryer lint and wax), lighter, duct tape, two hand warmers, Mylar cheapo.

GI poncho, hammock, SOL escape bivy, thermalite extreme liner.

Milspec polypros, wool gloves, merino beanie.

I'll also be bringing a mat, but haven't decided whether to bring a closed cell or inflatable one yet.

Now, the SOL bivvy is rated at 50F, and the thermolite is rated at adding 25F, and the low for this week is 26F, so I'm borderline there. I don't know how well the polypros work, but I've got down to 40 in the bivvy/liner without them. Is this suicide?

Not pictured, I'm getting a steel cup and sterno can for soup and hot drink, not sure what I'm packing for food, but that's my cookware limitation. What would you eat?

I'm trying for 3-5 days, won't be going too far from home at least for the first night, and this isn't in forestry land, so no fires. Any other advice you want to offer is welcome. Also, it's going to rain.

You're gonna be cold dude. I slept in the sol bivvy w/fleece liner for a few months it was great for summer but once it hit the 40s at night it wasn't enough. Even with my clothes on. I would seriously consider matching your bivvy with a 40 degree down bag. You'll never regret being warm at night. Also weight/durability wise, get a thermarest zlite. It does great for heat reflection and lets be honest; neo thrashers are too loud.

recommendations for boots and rain/wind breakers?

i live in the city, but i spend an enormous amount of time outside, and occassionally trek out to the appalachian for some exploration.

im looking for an affordable rain breaker i can throw over sweaters and shit while im in the city on rainy days, but also some affordable boots i can use once the snow and rain gets to me too much come june. i cycle a lot so that has to be a consideration in whatever pair i scope out.

any suggestions and ideas?

I got a north face rainshell for like $25 on sale from the north face outlet. Marmot Precip is also super good and if you do a bit of looking you can get them for less than $50. As far as boots I like both my salomons and my columbias.

Hello /out/, I need your help. I hope I don't break any boardrules/culture with this post.

I am completly new to going camping in the woods. I camped a few times with my dad at official camping spots but I never went into the woods on my own to spend a few nights there.

Can you recommend me some stuff (and brands) that I will need to spend a few nights in the woods somewhat comfortable.

Hunting food is out of question because I life in germany. Tents are a no go aswell, because that would break the law.

I hope you can give me some tips/pointers so I can become a sc/out/ aswell.

What kind of shelter are you allowed to have then?

The only real differences between 1 night and 3 are your food, water, and toiletry requirements. Depending on length you may need a filter, or you can pack in all your water. If you are walking anywhere I would bring some sort of water purification just in case something goes wrong. A sawyer, life straw, or iodine tablets can fulfill this. For long trips where I know I'm going to filter a lot of water I prefer a pump style with an adapter to fill my bladder through the drinking tube instead of removing it from my pack.

Stuff:
Sleeping bag (+pad if sleeping on ground)
Folding chair with arms and cup holder
flask+favorite spirit
dining set- fork, knife, bowl, and cup are all you NEED
cookset- portable stove, one small pot and coffee pot if you so desire
toilet paper, soap, toothbrush+paste, first aid kit
A cigar
A book
Flashlight (LED headlamp preferable for reading)
Fire making materials (ferro rod, lighter, tinder, firestarters, etc)
A knife
Extra rope
Extra socks and underwear

Thanks for the input.
when i just build a roof over me I won't get punished as hard as having a full tent build up.
Can you recommend any sleeping bags + pads?

Will picrelated actually work?

If the base fire is strong enough, yeah.

You're better off with a bonfire though; that one looks like a lot of work or a lot of luck. And getting fresh wood to the right spots would be a bitch.

If you're hunting and not just camo-fagging, then the mountains of Montana Idaho and Washington are all pretty much the same. Darker greens work well. Most of the paintballers have better luck on treed arenas with marine camo than anything.

If you are camo-fagging, then I believe realtree with a very large blaze orange logo is what's in this fall.

You don't. You either go with it and pull the trigger and come to terms with the fact that you'll have a dead animal on your hands, or decide that you're better off shooting paper targets.

Your call.

You can't help feeling like a faggot because you have been living that life in this rotten world. Blast those fuckers until there is nothing left. It's cathartic

If you enjoy killing something then there is something wrong with you. I have been hunting for 14yrs now and I never like killing. I enjoy the rest immensely but not the actual killing the critter part. If you need to hunt then do so. If you do not then don't. Guns are just as much if not more fun to use at targets any ways. I like shooting steel targets all day long far more than shooting once on a 3 day long hunt

/out/ how do you completely remove yourself from people for a wilderness camping trip? I'm thinking Alaska or upper Michigan, but I want to be away from people COMPLETELY.

I don't want to stray onto private property or something, I just want to go to where no people are and camp out on a river; fish for some trout or something. Sure you can go on camping trails but they are still full of people and you have to deal with potential encounters with the law.

tl;dr give me your advice on getting away from everyone completely. Any stories are appreciated.

national forests, its called dispersed camping. ive never had a problem, you drive in deep until you are on dirt path forest roads, park the car and start hiking in. get a motor vehicle use map from the particular forests website, a fishing license, and plan out a spot. some parts will have larger spaces between forest roads so aim for those. keep in mind there are some forests specific rules and all forests dont want your camp 100-400 feet from a water.
>>
>>627958
also you can generally legally stay in one spot for something like 14 days, then you must at least move your camp a mile away, and you cant go back and forth between two, but you could probly be ok touring the forest like that
>>
How far are you willing to drive and walk?

Here are my (few) photos from the last fishing trip i did. This is the São Francisco river in Brazil. This bioma is called ''Caatinga'' (i means white forest in native Tupi language) and it's a unique brazilian biome, characterized by the semi-arid climate with long drought and small bush trees who rapidly gains foliage when it rains, a big and pretty explosion of life. Nowadays, we've being facing a terrible 5 years drought..

Whose bright idea was to make one of the most poisonous shrubs known to man common landscaping filler?

You could get a higher body count than 9/11 off of one hedge, yet they post them around my University like it's nothing.

I suppose they just correctly assume no one knows about how deadly they are, but I am shocked no would be murderer hasn't lucked into googling a free infinte source of super poison.

So I want to put together a pack to be used for hiking, fishing, and day camping (this is not a bug out bag or any survivalist stuff, just for day trips). I just need it to hold the basics (stuff like food and clothing will be decided trip by trip), so I started to throw a list together of stuff to put in it and I wanted a second opinion on stuff I nay or may not need.
I live in a forested area of southern ontario and i tour up north above the great lakes at least twice a year.

So far i have;
Flashlight
Headlamp
Lantern
26"hatchet
Collapsable saw

I made a cinnamon based mosquito repellent using alcohol as the medium. I gotta say not only does it work but it leaves the little shits so dizzy you can just pick them up. I imagine what's happening is that when the mosquito spits to apply the histamine, the layer of cinnamon essence left on the skin mixes with the spit and evaporates right on their faces. That's good and all but the solution evaporates too fast when trying to apply it, and it wears off too soon as well. Is there a way to make this a little bit more... oily? Using actual oil as the medium proved to...

You could try diluting cinnamon essential oil in water and spraying that.

Greetings comrades,

This January I'm taking the Fish and Wildlife conservation 2 year course, up in Canada, Ontario. After, I intend to take Natural Resources and the Law. Why? I have this unfaltering duty inside of me to protect mother nature from poachers, and direct and indirect human impact. The strongest argument I have; is this planet of ours, so stupendously vast in its eco systems, terrains, and life, it seems almost foolish to want to negatively impact it, when there is not a single planet that we know of , that is diverse as this one. / besides the paperwork...

tl;dr: I need advice on essentials for a short survival-based wilderness hike. I want to bring as little as possible but still be able to make it out without any unfortunate incidents.

Okay /out/doorsmen, here's the deal.

I've been living in Tennessee my whole life, and I can fish and hunt as well as any other red-blooded Southerner. I am, however, relatively new to hiking. I recently moved to Chattanooga, and the Smokies have inspired me to get in touch with the mountain spirit.

Hiking is really just walking, and you're going to get a lot of different answers as far as what a good gear-out is.

What's your distance? How often do you camp? What's your body weight? Do you stay in shape, and walk or jog in particular?

I'll type out my gear-out while you answer those.
>>
>>627420
four day? I won't give you a list of supplies and such, but I can tell you that a 35L is generally considered an overnight bag. a four day trip you need a 45-60L. I suppose some of the ultralight guys might be able to tell you how to pack for 4 days in a 35L.

give /out/ some time, and you should get some pretty good comments on here.
>>
>>627422

5'7, 180 lbs, and I am in pretty good shape considering the lack of exercise. I'm definitely making adjustments to the way I eat and I started a workout routine a few weeks ago.

I don't camp often anymore but when you live in the South, sleeping outside is a way of life. I guess I'm not wanting to go "hiking" so much as I want to walk a certain distance (maybe 10 or 15 miles), pitch a tent next to a water source, fish for some trout or the like, and dick around for four days....
