Question for all the flytyers on /out/ I'm not from this board so not sure how many that would be

My friend is opening a webshop for flytying materials
By looking at the brand samples collected from producers from every where around the world, compared to generics from ebay/aliexpress/alibaba, how big exactly is the difference?
brand vs generic wholesale flash/dubbing/thread/hooks etc.

Pic unrelated

For hooks, use branded. Everything else can be El Generico. Reason being I've had cheap hooks bend / break / blunt. I only use Eagle Claw hooks now, haven't had a problem with them. That said, I'm merely a fisherman -- I don't tie many flies. I'm sure someone with more experience than I will be along shortly.

So budget crap will do the trick.

20 KB,
I doubt many here are into this show, but this article is worth the read even if you've never heard of the show.

http://edgeyk.com/article/renewed-for-season-two-why-are-so-few-houseboaters-on-ice-lake-rebels/

Obviously the show follows the docu-drama, but it is hilarious to read about how the other houseboaters feel about this show. The comments section on that link is awesome as well; basically a bunch of the locals making jokes.

Gf found a cheap package, so we are going to Fairbanks, AK for a week. Mainly to see the lights and maybe do some ice fishing.

Being a bit of an adventurer, what are some off the beaten path things we can do in Fairbanks or within one day trip?

We will be renting an awd vehicle instead of joining a tour group. I heard driving is treacherous this time of year?

We are leaving in 2 weeks.

Travelling to Romania in a couple of weeks with some friends, heard it's a wonderful place for hiking/camping.
Anyone been there? Got any recommendations?

Welp I've been to Romania for hiking, but a different area. Not sure how applicable my experiences will be but I'll share some top tips anyway.

I was hiking in the fagaras mountains, and the single biggest danger was the sheepdogs. Do not fuck with a sheepdog. If you see a herd of sheep, be afraid. Be very afraid. They will try to rip your face off if their shepard doesn't stop them, and even if he yells at them, they'll still want to rip your face off and will be barely containing the urge.
Carry lots of dry socks. Dunno how the weather gods will...

One further tip: Don't be nice to the stray dogs. There's tons of them, they will beg from you, and if you give them anything, even just affection, they'll follow you. We got a stray killed because we were nice to it - it followed us ~10 miles out of town to a lodge we were staying at. The lodge owners had 2 beastly dogs protecting their place from strays and those 2 presumably killed it. They kept the beasts back while we were around, but I think at night they were let loose and the stray was still hanging...

4. do NOT trust gypsies
5. like the other guy said, sheepdogs are vicious. keep a large can of pepper spray handy.
6. never turn your back on a sheepdog

3 MB,
Sup /out/, UK outgoer here.

I've read several guides on wild camping in Northern England, and thought I'd give it a go. I have been planning to walk along sections of the Pennine Way while camping off the path at night (obviously not too close to the path). It will probably be towards the northern area of the trail as water sources are more common. However I will still need to take food etc. and was wondering which foodstuffs are recommended as I will have limited space, but will probably be able to stock up at a local shop somewhere.

I also need a few...

northern england is beautiful.

Advice for wild camping; if you don't disturb people or animals and you keep yourself well hidden then you'll be fine. if you want to make a fire make it preferably after nightfall, but most places are well secluded and the farmers don't care.

A tarpaulin will be fine.

Mainly keep to the Lake District fells myself, but in my experience as long as you don't ruin the place with rubbish or firepits, don't camp on paths you'll be fine.

I've camped within 50m of the path before but this was in deep winter with snow and blizzards abound so I guess there was no one really to hassle me anyway. Personally if I see a tent when I'm out hiking I don't get offended or anything, I don't really see the issue myself.

For food I normally just use the...

I'm looking for a solid softshell jacket for general operating, preferably <150$ and warm+weather resistant. Is pic related a good option? Is there a general consensus on Condor/Rothco jackets here?

You'll be needing a arcteryx atom LT, sir. Soft shell, super light weight, stores away easily.
Been using one for the last 5 years and it's been a staple in my cold weather kit.
But be warned, the dead bird is addicting and you'll end up a poor gear queer.

This guy's got the idea. I would suggest a drac jacket though and you can wear the atom sv type jacket over it. And you can wear a fleece under the drac

For the Midwest, Wisconsin/Upper Peninsula Michigan

For the East, Maine.

For the south..don't really know what's down there. Arkansas/Georgia kinda looks cool.
