37 KB,
What are some really great parkas? I'm looking for a really great, versatile winter coat/parka that I can wear for /out/ stuff, and to work, pretty much anywhere. Ideally it would last me several years.

5.11 Tactical's parkas seem cool to me but idk anyone who has used them. I hear Canada Goose is good but expensive. Any recommendations?

Canada Goose, you cheap motherfucker. You already said the best, you know it.

Cheap out and get The North Face Expedition, save yourself $500.
>>
Also interested in this. I don't want to spend $800 on a parka. Would rather spend closer to $100 since I'm just going to beat it up outdoors. Lowest temps I'll see will be around 0 F (gets colder than that here, but I don't camp if it's that low)

Haven't read that one, but his Guide to Nature Observation and Tracking was pretty good.
Also Tawrell'sCamping & Wilderness Survival and Army Survival Field Manuals.
The Barefoot Architect is good for /out/buildings.
And Thoreau, John Muir and Aldo Leopold are good for getting in da mood.

It'd be great fun having a set, I don't think I'd have any practical use for them, just for the entertainment.

Can go for a decent Gen 1 set up (Decent in terms of Gen 1 that is, Gen 1 is still fucking shit) and a really good illuminator. Otherwise save up and get maybe some used Gen 2s at least.

Not much now with this weather unless you like that.

Happy to announce I'll soon be spending the winter alone in the woods with just my backpack in the cascade range of Oregon. Going to have a great time living the easy life. Wake up, warm up, get food, warm up, get food, warm up get food, sleep, repeat.

Good luck, anon. Make sure you bring books pertaining to what plants are edible or you'll fuck yourself like that one kid. Also, a small wildlife book with good details will point you in the right direction for where to look when hunting.

I'm not sure where to post this, /out/ seemed the most appropriate board. I'm studying mental health nursing and I have to travel to the other end of the county for my university placement. This is about 3.5 hours either way by train, I don't drive. The placement is about 10 weeks long, of which I'll probably have to spend 4 days away from home.

I can't really afford £40+ per day staying in bed & breakfasts, does anyone know a cheaper option in the UK? How viable would camping be?

Jetboil....it seems there are a lot of rival competitors coming out with this tech now- AlpKit make one for £35, Highlander also do one for a similar price. MSR Does the Windboiler, which is JetBoil money...

I've had a Jetboil since May, and it's been good. The only thing I've found is that it's either full throttle, or off, there is very little in between, hence buying this today. Despite having a 'better' more controllable vale, it feels a hell of lot cheaper, and less well made than my Flash. Do any other sc/out/s have REAL feedback on...

Pretty much what the youtube ppl will say, will pretty much be said here too. What they say is really input, cause a lot of them will test the crap out of them before giving said input. So stop being an autistic faggot. This thread has been done plenty of times, go look at the archives.

90% of the 'reviews' on youtube is on stuff that has been out of the packing less than an hour, 7% used a handfull of times an there is maybe 3% of non-shill, genuine content

Don't forget to pick your fedora up on the way out...

I have had 4 of them. The first three broke and I returned them to rei. I love them for convenience and utility but the quality is poor and is really going downhill.

The oldest one i had was the best i thing it was the flash, it broke when I dropped it. the second one was supposedly ultralight but the plastic broke right away and the membrane disintegrated. Third one the plastic cup broke right away and the metal fittings didnt join right.

I would love to know if any competitors have a good alternative.

Btw im a middle aged backpacker so fuck you you little pipsqueak

Apache Pier.jpg
213 KB,
My wife and I took a vacation to Myrtle Beach and stayed at Apache Pier campground a while ago. We were set up in a small camper/trailer that was minutes from the beach. I liked it so much, and the idea of a small community that was still semi-/out/, that I started looking into it for retirement. I'm 31, so it'll be a while, but I'm looking for ideas for places that are similar. I found that lots in the campground we stayed at go for about $15K+, then I would have to buy the actual camper/trailer home. But I loved being close to the beach and I thought that it...

My plan is to build a small cabin on cheap land, then build bigger as I get money

How do I avoid being eaten by a shark while spearfishing?

If I stay close to the shore there's only small fries.

If I go out into the ocean I become the prey.

It's illegal to spear fish in just about every river around here. And those that do allow it have murky waters. I live in Sydney, btw. So if anyone knows any good spots, do tell.

Bullsharks are well over 3m at maturity and travels up rivers to spawn. Maybe you should reconsider your hobby if you scared of sharks. They can smell your fear and if you flinch or show any weakness they will attack.

Forestry, biology, ecology, environmental studies, parks & recreation management. There's probably a few more that I can't think of.

I minored in environmental studies, I should have majored in it. Very cool field. Lots of companies and governments pay big bucks to environmental survey and study firms to do land research prior to buying or building on the land.
