Hey /out/, I'm looking for an inexpensive and short climbing rope to use for scrambling and urbex, but the only ones I'm finding online are at least 35 meters. What do you use when you're only looking for about 20 m of rope or otherwise on a budget? Also, those of you who use climbing rope for urbex, do I need to invest in a harness or is tying one from rope fine?
>>651127
>What do you use when you're only looking for about 20 m of rope
You use 35m
>tying harness from rope
If you hate comfort and want to tie it anew every time you want to use your rope, yeah sure.
>inexpensive rope and harness
Second hand, thrift stores, craiglist, ebay, season's end sales, etc
Although I wouldn't cheap out on rope and a harness if I were you.
And for your sake, I hope you...

Sorry to crush your spirit, but this is literally "I'm going to kill myself by falling: the thread."
You should at a minimum go to your local rock gym and learn to belay. And yes, if you're going to be trusting a rope with your life, you should really get a harness. It's not the 3rd edition of Freedom any-more, harnesses have been widely accepted since the 80s.
Pic semi-related, it's what we don't do anymore.
are you going to be properly leading on it, or anchoring it from above and using it as an extra point of contact? that will affect whether you want dynamic (stretches up to 33%) or static (stretches <5%) rope. if you might fall more than 5-10 feet on it, go with dynamic to absorb the load, if the ropes going to be fixed and you won't fall more than a foot or two, get the one that stretches less so you aren't needlessly working extra.
either way, climbing gyms and shops and stores like rei sell climbing rope by the foot.
Sup, /out/?

Hi /out/
I will be beginning my basic military training in about half a year and I want to get a good pair of boots. They need to be black like in pic related. The ones you get given are okay supposedly, but some comapanies allow you to use your own. I figure it'd be a good idea to get more used to marching with a similar type of boots already. Any recommendations for black boots?
In pic related the first ones are the standard boots, the ones on the right are the ones used wintertime.
>>651765
Bit pricey though, looking like some try-hard spoiled cunt isn't exactly something I want to do.
anyone have one of these?
getting one for christmas and i'm looking forward to it. is it up to the hype?
op here
thanks
No the handle cracks it's Fiskars what did you expect?
>>651278
Fiskars is a world-class, best in breed brand. All of their products are A+ Tier
Anyone else starting to get comfy in Florida right now?
It is nice to finally be getting some cool windy weather, isn't it?
>>650030
Just did an overnight on the Florida Trail. My ride fell through on me, so I doubled back from hidden pond to juniper instead of continuing though. Wish I had something to take pictures with.
South Alabama here. (20 mins away from border)
What places are good to go /out/ in Florida?
what are your hiking food hacks?
Stuff that's nutritious, non-perishable and maybe even a bit tasty. For warm climates this is my list:
- Sunflower seeds, probably half my caloric intake
- Bread or for longer trips hardtack
- Dried fruits (dates, peaches, sultanas etc)
- Rice or oats if I can make a fire (I don't carry stoves or gas burners or whatever)
very simple and gets boring on 3-4 day hikes. What could I add?
I'm too poor for jerky.
Salami is non-perishable and cheaper than jerky
>>652738
Most of us just eat hardtack, not because its cheap but because it tastes good and is authentic
Okay /out/ I'm looking to go to Guadalupe peak today and I'm in need of a hiking buddy since all my friends are basement dwellers. I'm a fairly skilled outdoorsman with quite a bit of hiking/climbing expirience. Who's up for it?
The hike from summit takes about 7 hours round trip. Weather is looking only a bit chilly. 7 hour drive from Fort Worth.
>>652239
>Guadalupe peak
Brace yourself for the wind--windiest place I've ever been.

Mother-in-law is in the hospital or I'd join you. I'm planning on doing it for my 50th birthday in 2018, but wouldn't mind going up early. Love that part of the country.
>don't skip McKittrick Canyon, it's beautiful
Anyone spending the Christmas night /out/ alone in the woods?
>>650772
Damn near, gf is being difficult.
Plus, have to work through the company shutdown and only get two four day weekends. Double time for the three days between, though, so...
May do. Have before.
No I wish
I spent last New Years out in the woods. It was magical
I was at a high point of elevation kind of like in OPs pic and when midnight hit fireworks went off everywhere in the city below me and i felt very alone.
First of all I hope my thread isn't breaking any rules but here for some honest advice.
As many may know the economy is tanking hard in Canada. I find myself in a position where for the first time in my life I'm going to be homeless just after the first of the year. We never think these things will ever happen to us but it definitely can.
I own a solo tent, winter sleeping bag warm clothes and a hike pack. My main concerns are obviously surviving the temps, not being hassled by cops, and wildlife dangers. I am all about leaving no garbage/damage from...

K good advice actually, Thanks.

make sure to look up the knife laws in your area and what excuses you can have for carrying weapons and shit as to avoid trouble with police just in case
You like hunting & trapping and fishing?
You like woodworking and living off the land?
You like a good hunting dog?
You like having your next neighbor 50 miles away?
You like being your own boss?
You like living free with the government giving not a singe fuck about you?
Or maybe you just dream about it?
Then this is for you https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fbhPIK-oBvA
I don't like watching this because it reminds me I'll never be as free and happy as them out trapping.
Pretty cool documentary. Looks like a tough but fulfilling life.
>>649895
>You like living free with the government giving not a singe fuck about you?
Did you not watch it? The guy literally works for and is funded by the Russian federal government, dumb dumb.
I made a webm of me jogging in the forest in the winter
No offence mate, but it's kind of grainy and a little boring. What did you hope to get out of this thread?
>>649787
Can you at least take the video. Put CG crap in it, like a monster roaring, screaming, gunshots, etc?
>>649798
We're getting closer...can we make it a nazi moose?
convince me why i should or shouldn't get a Swiss volcano stove
Just be yourself anon
Get one! I use mine to feed my family of four on three day backpacking adventures. The great thing is it doesn't use fossil fuels so thus is carbon neutral with no carbon footprint so it really pays for itself on the environment
Why should I convince you to do anything? Convince me.
Hey /out/ lads I'm planning a day-long snowshoe hike and I need some recommendations for locations to snowshoe near Stevens Pass or Leavenworth.
I have a group of 6-8 people accompanying me, but we're all pretty fit so most trails shouldn't pose a major challenge.
So far, the route to Lake Valhalla from Stevens is our #1 choice. Where do we go to start this trail? Anything to know about it? Should we consider another trail?
Thanks.
>>652692
I love that area. I wouldn't be able to tell you any particular trails, but it doesn't really matter, that whole area is amazingly beautiful.
>>652695
Damn, that's just what I need.
I came to 4chan because of the fappening but I only stayed because of /out/. Thanks guys and a Merry Christmas to you all.
>>652029
Merry Christmas, newfriend.
Merry Christmas!
>>652029
i went from being 170lb on /tv/ and /b/ to 142.5lb on /out/ and /o/.
love u guys, love the /out/doors, love life <3
The thread last time seemed to be fairly popular so I figured if people were interested this could become a regular thing. Feel free to put in your favourite /out/ films below and discuss what you did and didn't like.
I asked about Into the Wild last time and I'm pretty glad I watched it. It wasnt entirely focused on the outdoors but it did it pretty well.
On my watchlist I have Jeremiah Johnson and Dersu Uzala, mentioned in the previous thread. Any thoughts on those two? I have heard Jeremiah Johnson is pretty good but havent really heard much else. Also feeling like watching a western. I havent seen any of the For A Fistful of Dollars films, they are classics but are they /out/?
>>649859
I am also maintaining my recommendation of Stalker. The slow pacing may turn people off but I found it very introspective, and the scenery was nice too. Not a thrilling film but if you have the time it's a nice one to sit back and take in
>>649858
This is a list of films not necessarily about going /out/, but there are certain /out/ elements in all of them.
Dead Man, Moonrise Kingdom, Papillon, Valhalla Rising, Lord of the Flies, Antichrist, The King is Alive, The Blue Lagoon, Picnic at Hanging Rock, Fitzcarraldo, Stand by Me, Ashes of Time.
>>649860
If you like the slow pace in Tarkovsky's films, then I'll recommend you Let Each One Go Where He May. When I watched it, it reminded me of...
