Is it safe to bathe when /out/ in bodies of water ?
I hear there's parasites and so its dangerous, but is it ?
What kind of water bodies are good for bathing in ?

>Is it safe to bathe when /out/ in bodies of water ?
No
>I hear there's parasites and so its dangerous, but is it ?
Yes, especially in fresh water during the summer
>What kind of water bodies are good for bathing in ?
Salt(ocean) water only
Depends on the water source. In North America the only thing that really comes to mind is dangerous amoebas but that is really just the roll of the dice and you would have to swallow water / snort it up your nose. Other places like South America can have shit swim up your dick hole and such though.
g'devening and merry xmas
just got one of these babbys and the corresponding programming cable for xmas, any tips?
here's what i've discovered so far

This video is part 1 of 3 that walk you through all the features of the radio, how to set it up and program it with chirp.
Program all the frequencies in pic related, and fill the remaining space with the FRS/MURS frequencies as well as local repeaters.
Thats a start.
just found the pic I was looking for. Program all these 98 frequencies plus the ones I mentioned.
i just got a puma bowie, I got the stainless steel version it was $100.00. Suprisingly not too much info on it online despite its popularity. What are y'all's thoughts on it? Pics and stories if you have them. Thanks for any help
I got one last year. It broke the first time I tried to use it.

$100 stainless steel knife?
Dear /out/,
Looking for a particular gift. I need to get my friend a reliable outdoor lighter. The cheapo BBQ lighters are throw-aways that always fail him at the worst time.
His hand coordination is bad due to some nerve damage, so the usual /out/ stuff like firesteel, etc., won't suffice.
Lighting Conditions:
* Could be windy
* Could be cold
* Never a high elevation
What's Burning:
* Candle
* Paper
* Easy tinder to start a bigger fire
If they made long-necked lighters with replaceable piezoelectric bits (I gather...

i'd get him a push button crack torch. They're at most gas stations and about 5 dollars. They burn hot and they are easy to operate with an adjustable flame.
The crack torch or like 20 bic lighters.

Bics are really hard to use with a gimped up hand. You'd think it wouldnt be, but its a lot of motion

What's the best 30 liter bag for backpacking?
>>653934
at 30l they are pretty much all the same. it all comes down to durability. you can get a really light one that will rip, or a really heavy one that will last forever. they are pretty much just bookbags at that size, the only difference is material.

Buddy of mine has one of these, seems to enjoy it. Anyone else familiar with the brand?
Is a 38L big enough for a weekend backcountry hike?
What's up /out/! So I have some questions on stealth camping/ wilderness backpacking in general. What are some of your stories? Helpful hints? Anything? I'm stationed on Camp Lejeune in North Carolina, and I drove 5 hours to Hanging Rock state park. I paid for a campsite then set up a fake tent and just went about 2km into the woods, but wound up still being found, I didn't make a fire or anything. So really just anything would help.
Pic is on top of hanging rock.
Hanging rock.
Go to a National Forest, you don't need to pay for a campsite you can camp just about anywhere.

Oh hell yeah! You got any pictures from your travels?
Hay /out/laws
Ive been approached regarding a hunting expedition to East Africa, Im assuming its Kenya/Tanzania.
Has anybody been there that could shed some insight into what kind of clothing is required, I have an akubra territory planned for a hat but not sure what kind of layering system for the body and am leaning towards a low cut flexible soled leather boot like pic related.

Ask whoever asked you to go there, not random people on the internet.

Nah nha what you want to do is just wear some flip flops for the flight over, when you get their go and ask the local store owners where youn puchase Albino made footwear, these will protect you from various witch doctors and voodoos the locals will hex on you. Remember the key word Albino wear, Also nothing looks more pimp then a sweet pair of white shoes in the african jungle.
Hey /out/, I need a flashlight.
I admittedly don't know much about flashlights. I searched ones I can get here in Canada and this is one that appealed to me for a few reasons.
1. 1000 lumens, it's very bright, but has low power modes as well.
2. Straight forward switch UI.
3. 18650 rechargeable batteries.
4. Strike face bezel that is not over the top conspicuous.
I work nightshift, usually start around midnight or 3am, and I walk to work. I also walk my gf to work or walks with me (we work in same store). Sometimes I get in situations where...

Elzetta, fucking expensive.
Fenix is also good, but it seems the quality on their newer lights went down a little bit. Might look into surefire lights too.
Make sure of the law, if you're not allowed to defend yourself with a weapon be careful of crenelated bezels / strike bezels - they may be classed as a weapon.
Thrunite have done a good job shilling their flashlights, but they seem to be quite good and affordable. I'm considering a TN12 and maybe some smaller one myself. If money isn't an issue I'd probably go for Surefire

thought this'd be an interesting read for this board. Norwegian goes to Canada and lives in remote wilderness for 6 months.

Building the cabin would be fun. But after that, just alone with your thoughts, nothing new ever coming, it would be painfully boring.
>>647621
People forget this when they romanticize the wilderness. Once the sun goes down and its 6pm alone in a tent, I think about the people I love and things I would be doing if I was home.

Hello /out/,
I am considering a pair of Baffin snow boots, so I would like to know what you think of that manufacturer, and if you would recommend anyone else if I should avoid them.
Thanks
Baffins are absolutely amazing. i was a roughneck for 2 years and only ever had to buy one pair. I still have them packed away since i moved to WA. Buy a size smaller than what shoe you normally wear since you arent supposed to wear them with socks. They have kept my feet warm in -40f weather and they have never leaked. get the kind that seal around your mid-calf to avoid snow in your shoe.
>>654414
I looked at a pair today, going with Vasque for alpine snowshoeing, but they seemed nice.
Basically, three things: fit, fit, fit
Try them on before on-line buy!
I know it sounds obvious, but in this day and age...
Love my baffins, might not fit you if you have underdeveloped chicken man legs
I get the general idea about backpacking where you use the least costs possible to travel wherever you want to go in the world, but I can't seem to find anything on the internet that clears these questions I still have: (And I'm referring to travel backpacking rather than the hiking variant)
>Do most people do it alone?
>Do lone backpackers usually expect to meet other lone backpackers at hostels in order to make friends/sex/join them if they're travelling the same route as you? (Is that the reason...

I would say most do it in groups to be honest. You have more people to carry gear that's essential, you get to share the experience with others, and you can often save costs.
Regardless of being in groups or not you'll definitely meet a lot of people, especially if you're staying in a hostel, but in really any good city in Europe you're going to find young people who want to party. Friends are easy to make when you're young and good looking and adventurous.
Driving your car does...

So it would't be more or less harder per se if you do it by yourself, just more expensive? I get that now, and thats fine I guess.
Also, I understand that sharing the experience with others is satisfying, I'd like to do that with people I meet along the way however, not my friends at home. (As I don't really have interesting friends at home who'd be down to do backpacking)
What I'm probably trying to get at here is will it be more or less harder to make friends with other backpackers...

Pretty much yeah. I mean I think it's more fun with a traveling companion, but I definitely ran into people who went solo who were having a good time. If you're not a sperg you can just hang out at your hostel common room and meet people (an offered beer goes a long way) but you can also meet people while out in the city of course, so no it ought not be hard to make friends. Just go through with an open mind, and try not to look like you're an American dad
So...I'm back on here after a years trip in the UK and what happened?
What's with all these r9k threads?
You do realize people from r9k don't go out, right? They're just shitposting from their rooms, why did we let these people take over?

Hey, /out/. I am building a camping/survival kit in a waterproof crate in the bed of my truck, and I am almost finished, I just need advice for what is the best multi-purpose rope I can purchase.
Multi-purpose as in hanging a tarp/hammock, and hoisting sacks of food or equipment off of the ground, etc. What do you think?
Also rope thread
3/4 inch 2500 lb mule tape.
>>652183
I found some on eBay for pretty cheap, would this be advisable to buy it from there or should I get it from a Gander Mountain/Academy instead? I don't believe it would matter, but I am relatively new to equipment knowledge.
>>652184
Mule tape comes in different widths and strength ratings. As long as it's the size and strength you need and is labeled on the tape then I don't think it matters where you get it.
