all things aside, i usually run into girls who claim to like the "outdoors" and "adventure" but when I ask what they've actually done, it's always something really mundane like going to a coffee shop in the AM hours

Probably the clothes and the whole 'woman are stronk' thing. But this is a huge generalisation since I know many women who are very athletic and fitter than me who know their shit and hate normie hikers as well.

Hey /out/, happy holidays first of all but I wanted to ask you guys for some kind of insight. I remember seeing a thread on this topic awhile back but want some more input. I helped kill, clean, gut, etc. A pig today to cook and eat for Christmas today and never done anything like this before. And to be come off as a edgy fuck but I really enjoyed it. I feel different as a person in a good way. Is this normal? I have respect for animal life and it shouldn't be wasted for the fuck of it but it was fun. So anyways I guess this could be a cleaning/processing/etc. Thread.

I bought some fur from a place that supplied pelts and stuff and sewed it into the formerly itchy wool collar of my camp jacket. Very satisfying because it turned out better than something I could have bought with a very low price for the materials in my case.

I think this is part of being a real man. To be capable. I started doing my own little work on my car and it feels the same way. You ask why you pay someone else to do something you could do better and plus get the satisfaction of doing it.

I grew up in the country. We raised goats, chickens, and turkeys for food. When you raise them, it's not as nice killing them. Sorta feelsbadman. But suddenly, cabrito! Then feelsgoodman. No feelsbadman part when hunting.

What would your advice to a first-time *solo* backpacker be? I have a nice wooded location set in mind, so what sorts of things would you think I should pack? I know you have to pack essential things, but not overpack, and still have adequate protection and first aid... and also how different is it from the feeling of camping with others in a tent/being in a campsite? I'm only going on a one-night excursion starting in the morning or midday to get my feet wet, and my car will be in a parking lot around a visiting center not too far away. Finally, are there any super surprising...

have you ever been alone in the wilderness during the night?

its terrifying
you need to gradually ease into it by practicing local trails at night
>>
>>655226
I've never been completely alone, but I've been with friends and walked a few trails alone around dusk. Thanks for the tip anon.
>>
>>655224
The only difference between backpacking alone and backpacking with others is that you have to carry all the gear because nothing is communal. Well, and you don't have to take care of anyone who forgot shit or have to listen to anyone whine.

I've done a few treasure hunts in my local national park that ran from one single website but I wan't to create something different, something you have to solve on the move. I did one on here and a guy actually went out and did it, even thou It was in America and I'm in the UK, he found his fathers keys under a tree.

I want to do scenarios like kidnapping and people have to follow the clues to find the victim, it'll all be light hearted, but I need ways of getting across clues, the move basic is QR codes, which give instruction, links to picture, videos...

How cold can you sleep without needing a sleeping bag, provided you wear long trousers, two pairs of socks and a jacket?

I'm trying to cut down on weight and forfeit my sleeping bag. Temperatures will at night reach 10 celsius (50 fahrenheit). I have a bivy tent and a sleeping bad, should it matter.
18 replies and 2 images submitted. Click here to view.

You're gonna be needing a sleeping pad more than a sleeping bag.
It might not seem that cold, but as soon as your body hits the ground, you're gonna start losing a lot of your heat to the earth.
>>
>>653173
yeah I got a pad for that exact reason. Maybe no top quality but better than nothing. I was just wondering if somebody has done it before. I remember camping with a thin sleeping bag at -2 celsius and freezing my ass off

For those temps it would just be nice for comfort. This one is supposed to weigh less than 2 pounds. Between it, a bivy sack and thermal underwear you should be nice and toasty.

Find a nest. Do some research on the birds mentality though. often times keeping them past a fledgling makes them demented. My suggestion is to let it go after adolescence and it will stay in your area and bring you cool shit.
>>
>>652311
This is a worthy goal.
The nests are huge , you just need to work harder at finding one.
They will use abandoned nests so if you find one , keep checking it.
You could also help repair one that is damaged and easy for you to get to.
It will not go unused for long.

I received a gift card for $150 for the North Face. I typically only really buy Arcteryx clothing, and most of my backpacks are for specific needs from other companies. What do I spend it on? I always thought TNF was a brand for rich people to pretend they do outdoor stuff.

Assuming.
>>
>>652845
I've only owned dead bird, and I use it literally everyday. My rampart pants are my tech pants I wear at work. They have outlasted all my 5'11's and other brands typically recommended in my industry. I've climbed hiked and done other things in them. I get its expensive but I'm very happy with the quality and ruggedness of the products. If your saying TNF is equivalent and quality that's one thing, I just don't know, if your saying dead bird is shit, then I want to know what you think is good quality.

My VE-24 is almost 30 years old. you'll find that TNF gear holds up well. Some of the the clothes may be shit that hipsters buy just for the label.
I'm curious what your specific backpack needs are; Sounds like an interesting /out/ story to tell. even so the sleeping bags & tents TNF makes are worth the money.

Hey /out/,
Was looking for a nice axe, figured, why not a more utility axe head?
>see pic

Idea was generally get a fire axe head. And get a handle for it so it can effectively double as nice walking stick. The pick is nice for climbing and digging adding to its usefulness greatly.

I don't hike where there are others around and general never see other people so I'm not worried about that. Thoughts?

Also general axe thread.

Lol?

You can slip innawoods and kill yourself with or without an axe, which you would be carrying anyways. May as well make it a walking stick so you don't slip.

Care to give some general info about urbex? Things you might need, how to find good places, etc? I've been interested in it for a while now, but I'm not sure how to really get into it without driving 3-4 hours just to find some well-known abandoned building I probably won't be able to get into.

Also, what to do if you get caught? What's the general protocol there?
