Ok so I after spending a lot of years playing vidya I want to get out more but having had photography as a hobby I kind of sense that all the gear that outdoor stores try to sell you might be a bit uncessesary

What I'm considering buying
>outdoor pants
all I have are tight jeans and they're just not comfy enough for hiking
do I need to buy an outdoor brand or would a pair of work cargo chinos suffice?

>boots
I have a pair that are very warm and comfy, but they're not by an outdoor...

Try to wander as deep into the forest as possible to be safest from soceity

A pleb would tell you to bring a compass but its 2016 now!

For day trips, you shouldn't need much beyond extra layers, a first aid kit, your camera and any extra lenses or whatever you need, a knife and some cord and maybe a tarp if you're really scared about getting lost, and a raincoat and backpack to hold it all in. If you're sticking to a pretty beaten and established trail system (like 90% of the ccfpd if you're near chicago like me), a map and compass shouldn't be necessary.

I don't really know what to tell you about pants, because i've worn slim jeans on day trips and been fine, but something...

You mean, going out at the morning and getting back the same day?

Man, you need absolutely nothing.
Get a 1L plastic bottle of water and a sandwich it an old bag, and you are set. If you are not following a trail, add a map. You don't need anything else.

>outdoor pant
Fuck that. Yes, a jeans is fine. It used to be the clothes of sailors, lumberjacks and miners.
Velvet pants are good too.
Modern technical clothes are better, but for a day hike, you don't...

Just like the title says.
From 20 to about -40 F, are there any viable alternatives to using a sleeping bag?

I was reading up on Surplus color weather gear and someone was saying that the Lv7 ECWCS trousers and jacket could be worn instead of using a sleeping bag because they are rated to -40. Theoretically this would allow you to get up and see what that dump was quicker, and they pack smaller than most comparably warm sleeping bags.

-this is assuming you are sleeping in a 4 season tent, with a reflective space blanket beneath you to bounce your heat back...

This stuff looks pretty hardcore:

http://www.fortressclothing.com/all-products

Their normal stuff is -30F rated and their extreme stuff is up to -68F
>>
>>654599
That's actually a pretty nice sounding idea, considering I usually have to get up like 5 times when doing overnights.

http://www.kommandostore.com/new/austrian-sniper-sleeping-bag.html

Maybe not what you're looking for, but it's still a cool alternative.
>>
>>654599
You have to be extremely careful about wearing clothing while sleeping in very cold conditions. It is very easy to cut off circulation while you are sleeping and have very bad frostbite set in. Something as simple as socks that are a bit too tight can do this and you can end up losing toes. This can happen even in -40 equipment simply because there's nothing heating it when the circulation is too low or cut off.

I'm not joking about this shit either.

Pretty amazing weather we've been having in the USA! Hope everyone is safe.

I saw the radar this morning and thought it was pretty interesting. To think it is snowing in Texas and raining everywhere else! Wow!

Either that or the el nino (which isn't to say its not caused by or influenced by climate change, but who really knows) its definitely unusual weather.

While everyone is pretty much aware of our individual insignificance in trying to slow climate change and those who do understand it have a feeling of resignation, I think we take solace in the fact that a warmer climate (I write as someone in the eastern US) is going to be more enjoyable for us to live in, despite the economic, agricultural, environmental...

Canada and Russia are the best I'd you REALLY want to leave civilization, but I wouldn't say that's the only definition of being /out/.

If I had to pick a country, it would be one that's most diverse. The USA is probably the most diverse country geographically on the planet.

USA has arid desert, high snow covered peaks, vast plains of grasslands, temperate forests, rocky cold coastline, tropical islands, warm Sandy beaches, artic tundra.... a huge selection of stuff to go /out/ in.

from seeds, plants take a while depending on the breed to actually shoot and become strong. In the meantime they are incredibly weak (some anyway) and they generally need alot of effort for no long term visual feedback.

Now cuttings, that shit is cash. learn how to maintain cuttings from older plants and skip the shoot phase of seedlings.

I would advise some better containers with holes in the bottom for better chance of not overwatering a young plant. Though I see the appeal of the jar itself.

So i scooped out several seeds from a butternut squash while i was preparing it to cook and put them to one side, i found a small plastic container with a screw on lid, similar to yours in size, i wend and dug up some dirt from outside, put it in the container, pressed the seeds in about...

So I thought it might be worth it just for the hell of it to have an urban disaster survival thread for the sake of the pacific northwesterners on the board. I happen to be a seismologist but not an earthquake seismologist. Still I know some things.

earthquakes work on a logarithmic scale. so each digit up is 10 times worse than the last. the following is a rough guide based on how long it lasts:

1 minute - 7s
2 minutes - 8s
3 minutes - high 8s
4 minutes - 9s

your area isn't really ready for an earthquake. A lot of buildings are not really...

I'm going /out/ on a week long camping trip again for new years.

And I've always struggled to know what food to even take every time. Sometimes its been easy with cold meats for the first day or two, but then its tinned tomatoes and carrots for the rest.

This year its a pretty stationary camping trip.

My problem is that because of the extreme heats for most of it, there will likely be state-wide fire bans, so cooking shit is going to be totally out of the question, which sucks because I'd just gotten a new camp stove for christmas.

For a week hike I once packed:

1 stick of pepperoni
4 bagels
4 snack sized peanut butter packs
4 bananas

8 pouches of flavored tuna
5 cups of brown rice

12 packets assorted flavored oatmeal
6 scoops of protein powder to be added to oatmeal

2 large ziploc bags of trail mix consisting of: peanuts, almonds, soy nuts, banana chips, yogurt covered raisins, cherries.

3, two serving mountain house dehydrated meals assorted flavors/meals

6 cliff bars

The bananas got a little squished but I ate them quickly.

Even with a fire ban, can't you just use a propane stove?

I mean a little isobutune stove to boil water isn't the same thing as having a fire. Even with a fire ban you should still be able to cook. Even just a charcoal stove should be fine.

Load up a cooler with beef, chicken, anything really and cook like you normally would grill at home.

Forgot to mention some of my items require a small MSR pocket rocket stove and pot for boiling water but that's it.

My family hates that I do solo hikes around Wisconsin. They say that I am asking to be murdered by going hiking alone. There have been a couple famous murders with hikers being killed on trails, and bodies are found every once in a while trails around the state.

Do you think that solo hiking is dangerous, as far as other humans are concerned?

Solo hiking? Christ, your family must be ultra paranoid or watch too much Fox News. I could understand if you were camping alone but are you seriously supposed to limit yourself from going outside because of the fear that someone might want to kill you? That's such backwards logic that I'm legit shocked.

Buy some pepper spray if it makes you feel safe, but the truth is you're probably way safer taking a hike than you are driving a car, walking down a busy street, going to any public place, etc. the chances of something bad happening are so small they're...

Hello /out/, I am really new to weapons and specially hunting, but I'm still really interested, but I find it really hard to find good tutorials on hunting (anything from hares to deer). Most tutorials are on more advanced shit like what type of scent killer to use, whether you should smear yourself in Internet deer shit or not, or what kind of camera to buy. I just want to know the bare basics. Speak to me like I'm retarded. I just got off the truck, what's the first thing I should do?
