Hi /out/
I occasionally browse this board in order to just read up on some of your experiences and knowledge.
Im pretty much a noob to the outdoors although I've been on short hikes a lot.
The most serious was hiking to the top of mt tammany at the delaware water gap.
I got no experience with camping, and I just aim at being able to spend a night and two sunlights outdoors (preferably around Appalachian area, like ny or pa). I bet I'm talking for a lot of other noobs here who just lurk and have minuscule experience like I do.

just do it. go out, make camp and go to sleep. have a possible exit, replace gear and methods if they don't work.
awesome movie.

Another thing noobs are worried about is gear quality.
Tents for example; how cheap is too cheap?
it's holding back my ambition
I went to /fa/. someone there told me to come here b/c of reasons.
just got hired by UPS (under paid slaves).
going to start out as a pt package handler/sorter. basically, move ~2000 boxes that weigh usually 20-40 lbs (max 70) into or out of trailers for 3-5 hours. I need boots that can take the stress. I've never bought boots.
It needs to be/have:
1 black/dark brown (company policy)
2 hard toe cover (in case a box drops)
3 ankle coverage
I read the /fa/ sticky. There weren't a lot of options, and some of the suggestions on there...

This is my old milspec 12inch Bowie I had. Gave it away to friend when I bought myself a new one. The only pic I have left of the knife. Will post new one now.
This one is on Amazon for very cheap if you just like to have a big knife or whatever. I would recommend for first one until you decide to trade up for something more specific you like.
Old thread is nearing bump limit.

Your goals:
-augment your long term food supplies for the summer and coming winter
-finding a reliable method to travel fair distances (10km) and carry up to 25lb of goods
-having a consistent method of non-electric light
-a source of easily accepted currency with which to barter or purchase needed items
-possible short term methods of heating (or improved insulation) and water purification

So /out/, this is my first time on this board, coming from /k/. I'm getting a hammock for my bug out bag, I already have a tarp as well. What should I do for sleeping pads? I have a closed cell pad, but I don't know where to put it (In the hammock or on the ground). Also, is it worth getting a "comfort" sleeping pad or not?

Well of course you put the closed cell pad on the ground if you are in the hammock! Anything else would be counter-intuitive.

How do you survive this complex world?
Who /thru-hiking/ this year?
Any tips from the vets?
i was gonna hike the TCT through like, 4 provinces. havent done much hiking before but im confident.
>>666345
The only real tip I could say about thru-hiking is that exploring off the trail, and side trails are more fun than thru-hiking primarily because there are less people. I am not a completist or a box-checker though
>>666345
Not really a thru-hiker since but last year in February I hiked 250km, the only tip I can give is pack light and watch out your feet. Your fucking feet.
Post your best pictures. So beautiful they will bring a tear to your eye.

I want to build a log cabin and neet in the woods, I don't care about electricity, I just want to reject society and supporting it, and live on my own. where can I do that?

Hey guys, looking for input on cold weather jackets (lowest approx -30C) but preferably on the cheap. As much as I like the idea of Fjällräven my wallet does not.
Get a waffle long sleeve/thermal long sleeve shirt, a 3-5mm neoprene wetsuit jacket, and what ever hoodie you own on top for a hood and pockets.
I use this layer system and was outside replacing a heater core for about 8 hours at a time at around -10F with high humidity.
This jacket right here is the shit, family.
>take out liner, can wear comfortably up to 70f/21c
>with liner i've worn it comfortably down to -6f/-21c with nothing but an undershirt underneath, im sure i could go lower
if you add another small later of insulation under that i imagine you could wear it to -30c or even lower quite comfortably.
>>672412
Try Helly Hansens line Helly Tech instead of meme fjallraven, cheaper and better. But also, if you want something truly good for that kind of weather you have to pay, no way around it. You can only evade paying too much.
Is an assegai a good hunting weapon?

That is all.
Are ponchos viable during winter where it snows heavily (6")?
They look super comfortable.
I have never tried a poncho but I think there's a reason no one wears ponchos up here in northern countries.
A jacket blocks cold wind and keeps warm air around your body. With a poncho like that in your pic, warm air escape out to the sides.
It could perhaps be viable if you have some really good wool layers underneath, but it still seems like a bad choice to me.
Ponchos look cool af if that's what you're looking for then go for it.
Ponchos were designed to be portable shade. They were open to provide air flow but still keep the body shielded from the heat of the sun. Then, they could be a blanket at night. So, they're better for the desert than for wintery places.
What are your essentials?
This is the barest thing I take when I go in the woods. It's a Maxpedition small bag. I have a Leatherman on one side with a sure fire light on the other. Inside the bag is a Fenix headlamp, a SOL emergency blanket and also is a small plastic bag inside with lighter, flint and steel, dryer lint, and Purel. The bag is pretty small and easy to carry.
