So I'm deep in the forest hunting ptarmigan/grouse (pretty much only thing in season now) and I had my 10/22. This real dark brown furred thing runs across this kinda hill, I was on my way up. I had my cell phone out using the GPS and I yelled "hey!!" It stopped and stood up on a downed trees root ball. This fucking thing was about the size of a small pony and had really weird large pointy ears, wolves in our area have small ears and are either black or grey in color, and it had a white/grey looking face. That's what got me. Wolves here hunt mainly by smell and sight so they don't really need big ears. Coyote's in our area use their ears when hunting small things like mice and voles. I just can't state how 100% positive I am it wasn't someones dog. I'm off work on Fridays so nobody really goes into the woods during the daytime because they work.

I own a small patch of forest and I'm planning on staying there for a week this spring.
I recently watched a documentary on a french regiment (13 RDP, you can get it on netflix the tv show is called "l'insider") and it got me thinking.
These guys dig hideouts and stay there for 2 weeks doing military intelligence and stuff, so I would like to do the same for shit'n'giggles, and because I'll have a week worth of time to kill. What would /out/ bring ?

What I'd do is bring you think you'd need and wing it. If you forgot something you need, try to make it. Making things would add some fun and experience anyways.
Bring a notepad and paper and try to keep track of what you used and how much. If you used something once, or never used it, consider not bringing it for next time (unless it's something like a first aid kit. You catch my drift?)
Depending on your environment, you may not need things that others would. Watch for things such as weather conditions, wildlife and plants (not too big an issue...

Hey /out/ how do you react when you see other hikers in the woods? Do you say hi? Ever walk with them? Is there even a point acknowledging people when the trail is crowded?

I always say hi, and never travel with people. I want to be nice, but I want to be alone. Most other people do too. In the rare and horrifying case that someone on the trail is lonely and desperately searching for a friend (like old people in line at the grocery store) you don't want to give them much opportunity to engage with you and start a conversation, otherwise yer fukt. Smile, glance at them quickly with a quick greeting, look down and keep moving.

Alright sc/out/s, what kind of activities do you do to stay in shape for your (enter favorite outdoors activity here) season? What do you do in the off season? What are your goals conditioning wise?
My activities:
Hunting, camping, climbing, downhill sports.
Exercises:
Mostly cardio, some weights(trying to avoid the gym til February), and small amounts of body weight.
Off season:
Lots more running and some rugby. Most of the time I just watch my intake.
Goals:
Get back down to 10% body fat and be able to run constantly for 60 mins at 7mph.

I picked up a Trek Tk II long edition from Sea to Summit a week ago and took it out this past weekend. Overall very comfortable and fits into my backpack very well, compacting to about the size of a NFL Football. If you want temperature ratings on it I found this on their website

Ive got a woods microlite rated at 40 F.
I usually just use a fleece liner with it in the winter. Have slept comfortably down to 23F with this setup. Been thinking about picking a Kelty Cosmic Down 0 degree bag. Any anons have experience with this bag? I mostly due long distance hikes so weight is sort of an issue. If it wasnt I would probably just get a modular sleep system but 12 fucking pounds is too much for a bag.

My winter setup is a Western Mountaineering Ultralight. It's rated to 20 degrees F, but I've slept in it comfortably down to around 0 degrees F using a silk liner.
Anybody have any suggestions for an affordable 30-40 deg rated bag? I want to start backpacking and all I have is the bulky crap one I used as a kid. I don't have a ton of money, but I can save if I have to.

Depends on what you want to do wirh them. As a everyday/work/trail boot they're great. I wouldn't go scrambling over granite tarns and back country scree fields with them, though.

Let me add to my post here that the ones in your picture... (I think they're the direct attach 6") are completely water proof up to the laces. I work in a bakery so I'm not scrambling over rocks all the time but I DO go out and do a fuck load of walking. I wore these bitches out.
