Hey /out/, /k/ here.
Would combat-style boots such as pic be used in lieu of actual hiking boots? Or should I bite my lip, spread my wallet, and let go of my dreams of going full STALKER innawoods?
With good insoles maybe but I fear for your feet regardless depending how far you go. Might want to waterproof them too.
Also have fun slipping in mud when it rains.
>>675373
If you're going to get combat boots at least get something decent.
Hello /out I've never been camping before how do you innawoods? Like what do you do?

lay in my hammock n shit
Have any of you sc/out/s gone through the CCC/backcountry program? Is it any fun/worth it? General americorps and such thread.
>>673234
That has always been my dream, but life took me towards other paths :(
I worked with the Montana and Wyoming corps this summer working with the NPS. They seemed to have a good time, it's definitely a lot of work, but they get to see and do some pretty amazing things and you make some lifelong friends.
Haven't heard anything glaringly negative, but what I have heard vouches for >>673577 statements. If you can, time in the corp is perfect for sc/out/s.
I can answer any questions about American Conservation Experience (ACE) if anyone has any or are thinking about joining a Corp.
>wool is overrated, particularly heavy coats
>hunting deer from a blind is for fags, double faggotry if you're using bait or feeders
>bushcraft gear for "survival" stupid when your tools weigh more than the things you intend to make with them (bringing an axe, knife and saw to make a shelter instead of a tent/tarp/hammock)
>softshells are silly
>bushcraft gear for "survival" stupid when your tools weigh more than the things you intend to make with them (bringing an axe, knife and saw to make a shelter instead of a tent/tarp/hammock)
The bushcraft mind set is that you carry the tools you need and not much else. What would happen if your tarp / tent fucked up? Its a more long term ideology.
>taking dogs on longer (multiple day) hikes is for wolfaboo faggots who want to act cool.
>taking survival food on trips shorter than 3 days is retarded.
>bringing a fuck huge bag of supplies with you for longer trips is still fucking retarded and means you're too stupid to survive, stay in your city environment pleb.
>bringing more than 3 multi purpose knifes.
>camping pillow and mattresses
and people...

you can take multi purpose tools or learn how to fucking use a knife instead of carrying a goddamn pickaxe and other worthless shit you won't be using anyway.

I went full autism and stitched together most of the stuff I have going on indoors right now, all pics from today

(8) Stupid olive prunings I took in late September still show no roots. Added a willow stick from the garden because it apparently encourages root growth in other cuttings, but it only developped roots itself and is sprouting massively. Also added more privet cuttings 2 weeks ago (but I know they take forever), as well as a cypress one a few days ago, let's see how those will do
(9) Finally on my 3rd attempt I got pomegranate to sprout, maybe the seed scarcification I did this time and putting them on 30°C was...

Hey /out/ I'm working on getting a source of wool blankets and hats from peru. its alpaca wool products as per my search. its really cheap compared to anything you will be able to source in the US its as good and better then standard sheep's wool. and if you're allergic to sheep's wool alpaca is a great alternative.
Currently waiting for my source [a friend of mine that I trust] to find some he can buy in markets and then send off to me. the cost of each product will be determined by each shipment and total cost of each unit.
So would anyone...

I'd actually like an alpaca blanket. That sounds comfy.
>>667577
Yeah sure, been thinking about getting some wool fabric for a blanket, if you can offer a decent deal on good quality stuff I'd be in.
I wouldn't mind one. How much would so ell one for and what are the dimensions?
How do I break it to my family that I want to get into hunting?
Both parents are pretty anti-gun in general. Family never owned a gun. Only thing we had was a pump air rifle for squirrels that were getting fucking with our roof. Once my dad figured out it was raccoons, he stopped shooting squirrels and used have-a-heart traps on the coons. Mom went insane when my dad bought me a toy revolver watergun when I was little.
I'm moved out now and in college. I participated in a trapping seminar at my university and helped skin a coyote. Saw raccoons, beavers, and...

Where do you live¿
I guess you don't and then realise your parents are smart people that don't want to hurt animals for no reason
I feel like starting a hobby of gold prospecting. I feel like knowing the equipment is easy and even finding gold but hard part is finding a place to look for gold, as well as asking permission to use private land, using the BLM records, staking claims and all that.
I live in Northen Virginia and my peliminary research pretty much states the first gold mining in the US was actually done right here on foot hills edges of the Shanendoha.
I was doing some test panning in the upper Potomac at a friends house and found a few flakes a month ago but nothing really worth...

sounds like you know this, but mineral rights are a serious fucking deal, so do your research before you step on someone's goes. claims are a matter of public record, but i don't know where to get them. start at the county building, maybe? they could probably at least tell you where you need to go to find out.

Planning a backpacking trip to Denali, AK. Any suggestions or tips? Can/should I bring a gun?
Yes bring a fucking gun u idiot. Don't be one of those people we have to remind all the other lower 48 fags not to be like
Also bring a bug net, life straw, ham radio etc.
It's pretty warm up there in the summer so a floor mat and poncho liner will suffice
>gun
>unseful against animals that can't harm you
>not useful against animals that could harm you
whatever bro if you want to go shooting things just do it and embrace it for what it is, and don't search for justification
My Husqvarna small forest axe.
Having never owned one, I can see a bit of a sheen on yours, does the shaft have a varnish or lacquer on it?
cuts in five minutes. I better like the ones with the strap on the sheath though, they tend to keep better.
ive never owned a husqvarna axe myself i must say im pretty interested in it.
as far as i understand it it goes
Gransfors Bruks > Weterlings > hultafors >husqvarna
so husqvarna is at the bottom rung. dont get me wrong i love husqvarna i mean goddamn my husqvarna lawnmower has run without flaw almost 20 years now. but that doesnt mean the axes will be compareablr. especialy now that most of the factories are .... eeeeh what the heck this got waaay to confusing to write out, ive only owned gransfors(ignore Biltema) and hultafors (ignore Bahco) axes....

Anyone around here into climbing? I'm pretty new to the sport and looking to invest in a harness soon. Any recommendations? Also climbing general.
>>637052
for a beginner hte best gear is the comfiest gear. shops often have a point shere you can hang from/sit in the harness to tell if you hate it.
>>637052
I'd recommend starting with bouldering as it is cheaper to start. You plan on gym climbing or actually being /out/?
I recently upgraded to pic related for a harness. I have a cheaper BD harness and it was way uncomfortable to hang in for any length of time. The DMM is a world of difference.
>>637376
Here's some of my stuff from when I was first starting to collect gear. Not shown is a 70m Sterling rope, shoes, helmets, nuts, and some more alpine draws. I suppose I'm due to take another gear picture.

BOBs have been analysed to death, but what about INCH and Get Home Bags?
What is too much to carry around in the car/at work to get home to your BOB?
What is too little in an I'm Not Coming Home bag?

Really should post pics of what's in the bag.

The bag itself, for those who haven't seen one. The strap can be unfurled and used as a waist belt or attached to the 'D rings' on top above the grab handle and used as a shoulder strap.
Anyone else kind of get depressed during winter? I mean, I fish and catch little to nothing. There's not much to hunt. What the fuck am I supposed to do. I'm so bored. I wanted to ice fish, but frozen lakes around here wont support my weight.

R8 my rod build again!
Who here has experience with micro guides on casting rods? Are they worth it?
On hour number five of a Boat-Ed's "about 3 hours" online boater safety course. There was a thirty minute break in there somewhere but this is definitely going on longer than expected. So tired the "Save & Logout" link is looking pretty tempting, but I can't take the exam until the course is completed. Then I fork over the thirty bones to get my certificate which thankfully is good for life.
Anyway, anybody here fish with medium-to-large swimbaits? I could use some advice on rod/reel/line combos. I'm not quite sure I'm ready...
