Ok /out/. I got my basic mora already, but now I want a bigger, better knife. I want to do batonning with it, general carving and cutting. I want something that is simple, durable and versatile. I'll use it for fishing, hunting and trapping trips in the canadian wilderness. So I stumbled across the Blackbird SK-5 while doing some research. What does anon think about that knife? Is it really worth the 170 moose bucks?

if there was a knife that did all these perfectly. the "perfect knife" wouldn't you think you'd see this blade shape EVERYWHERE? because there isn't.

I'm not sure why you would baton on the trail.. theres no reason for it, unless you plan on becoming a bodger.. even then you would want a froe.

This is a thread for the power of the sun, be it positive or negative. What are your responses to strong sun? Do you burn easily? Do you tan easily? How well do you protect yourself from the sun?

Personally, I've only burnt once or twice in my life even though I'm rather pale (although I live in the 63rd latitude), and normally I never tan that quickly or deeply, but last summer I went to France and after five days I went from *pic related* to *pic related*. Do you btw think that is a normal tanning speed, and do you think I'll get cancer?

Didn't you make a similar thread a couple of months ago?

It's a reasonable topic but try not to be such a vain, attention seeking faggot about it.

That's pretty normal tanning speed, but tbqh I still avoid tanning, long term it's still bad for your skin and if you keep letting yourself get tanned in a few years your skin will look like dogshit.

Hey /out/, what's your opinion on gas stoves?

I'm going /out/ in a few weeks for 3 days with some friends and would like to finally get a decent stove. We prefer gas but spirit burners are a decent compromise.

What would you guys recommend?

Last time we went camping we took an old gas stove, the cannister didnt properly fit into the stove and we ended up lighting the whole thing on fire and one of us had to get in there and kick the cannister out. Never again.

I'm considering the trangia 27 but is that just a meme brand?

Is it chepaer to find pots and gas burners (not neccessarily trangia) seperately?

>>

Gas, stovetops are small, cheap and light, but not very stable, remote canister stoves are somewhat better. I use them for longer treks, it enables me to cook halfway safely in the porch of my tent when weather is shite. Since you always need a cartridge, gas stoves are never really light

Alcohol stoves are fun to build really light, but lake power, are hard to control (flame size) have problems in cold weather and have a much higher fire risk. I carry them for shorter trips like weekenders when I am sure that the weather is fair.
Also, Trangia is excellent, somewhat heavy (for light gear) but built like a tank.

I grew up in Humboldt County and hippies were doing that constantly in the 80s and 90s, they'd go and build a little platform in the tree with a tent and chain themselves to the tree to protest logging. One chick stayed in a tree for close to 3 years IIRC.

4 MB,
I was hiking here a few weeks ago, and I saw this weird stone circle on the second day. This was a few miles after Woody Gap, in the Chattahoochee National Forest area. We'd just crossed over a bridge of two logs, and passed through a camp site.

I noticed this right off the trail, next to the stream. At first it looked like an old cemetery, but the stones looked like they were in a circle, were weirdly shaped, and the area was roped off.

If it's not Indian (I doubt it is), it must have some sort of significance. Maybe some modern Pagans made it?

When I was younger and out in the woods Id often do stupid shit like that, create vaguley satanic looking mini-stonehenge sites in the middle of BFE or whatever. I was young and dumb and it was fun.

I'm willing to bet that's probably how it got built. Just some people fucking around. Of course those people just fucking around could have been a couple of Huck Finns 100 years ago or a few bored Indian youths 200 years ago. Or maybe modern day pagans. Hey /out/, any Arizona residents have experience with raised bed gardens? I'm 19 and looking for a new hobby and this really intrigues me. Any tips for a first time gardener? I'm looking to plant tomatoes for sure and probably jalapenos as well, and a couple others depending on how many plants a beginner should start with.

95% ignore except for a hello. Occasionally I'll meet a climber or UL fag and we'll have a bro moment talking about gear and how there are too many fucking Boy Scouts on the mountain. I met some SAR guys who clued me in on Northern Lites snowshoes, and a climber who showed me a great bivy spot on Mt baldy summit. Other than that I do my own thing

I will say hello, mention any trail conditions behind me that could be dangerous and be on my way

Most of the time I do my own thing because I have my rythm and I don't want to change it to go with people. Also, being /out/ and not seeing anybody for a few days is a great feeling.
But when I happen to share some time with someone I usually enjoy it, people here in France are very friendly when /out/, and most of them are kind of impressed by the fact that I'm alone and sleep outside for several days so they want to talk about it, which is nice.

Anyone ever backpack without hardshells?

I was thinking softshell jacket and pants for maximum breathability and _some_ rain protection, and carrying a rain poncho for heavy downpours

I don't like wearing plasticy hardshell jackets against my skin, and honestly I've never found any waterproof/breathable jacket to be actually significantly breathable.

What do you think /out/?

I've got a frogg toggs poncho and it's pretty good but yeah, not exactly breathable. It's the only thing I use because it packs away pretty small and is relatively lightweight. The material is not very tough, it's a rubberized material and seems like heavy briars would shred it all to fuck. It is quiet to wear though unlike a lotta ponchos and rain suits.

I use an umbrella and bungee cord to strap it to the frame of my backpack or straps. You can use it when it's sunny as a parasol. I imagine it'd also be good for scaring bears if needed.
>>
I don't get why ponchos are a big deal. Most of them don't have sleeves and only cover the upper half of your legs. It's okay in light rain but if it really starts pouring down your legs and arms will be soaking wet. Why not just go all the way and take rain pants + rain jacket (with a hood) so you properly cover your body.
Having wet clothes suck.

Metal arrow heads will be good. I like that he didn't put any thing on the arrows during practice. I've seen a few people do that. It doesn't turn out well.

But, if he does find some iron ore he'll be able to make arrow heads easily without using up much metal for them. I wonder how long it too him to find discarded scrub turkey feathers.

Let's talk winter sports. Went skiing for the first time today, never seen such a collection of rich white people. Literally didn't see one black person. I've heard snowboarding is very difficult compared to skiing, is that true? Does longboarding skills transfer by chance:

Skiing is easier to get into but harder to improve on. Once you get past the pizza/french fry stage its hard to transition into full on carving without a ton of practice. Skis are also more versatile than snowboards (Never have to unstrap to move on flat surfaces, easier to carry/tow things, can go across moguls easier)

Snowboarding is harder to get into, but easier to improve your skills on once you have the basics down. The big barrier is getting your toe edge, but once you get past that carving becomes natural...

I dont see blacks anywhere when outdoors doing anything.

Blacks and outdoors dont match, save for military blacks, which are basically forced to.

Also the skiing is for rich whites is now a meme and defunct. it happened just like with aviation.

Back then both skiing and being a pilot where exclusive and carried a certain status. With both activities being more accessible now almost everyone does it. It has lost all exclusivity.

Snowboarding is more difficult to start but less difficult...

So what the fuck is the deal with little kids shredding up the slopes? I got rekt so hard by this little 6 year old pros. Is it just rich parents going to the slopes every winter and getting their kids lessons?
