How do spark plugs work? Why is there porcelain involved?
>>14129150
Do I look like a google
They spark. In an environment of extreme heat. Porcelain is stronk in heat and does not conduct undesired.
Porcelain is an exceptional isolator.
Exhibit A: Hopefully every power line in the world.
Hey guys, I want to buy a z4m. Is this a good car?
Is it hard to work on? I heard I have to manually adjust the valve springs or some bullshit.

welcome to bmw ///m ownership
I posted this in the /ccg/ but got no real help. So I want to ask /o/ in genreal.
I found an rx7 for 1.8k. It's five hours away. I have a friend who is good with cars checking it out. 1983, 120k kms on the odo. It's at a dealer. Manual, five speed. I'm certain it's a 12A engine, since that's the stock configuration, and it looks stock.
The Alternator looks new, I know it was driven onto the lot eight months ago. There appear to be no leaks. The passenger side rear quarter panel has some rot, but there's no rot on the chassis. Just surface...

You pretty much got it, if neglected that car will eat your wallet a few times over. If you treat it well you'll definitely enjoy it. Biggest keys to success with these cars is
1. Upgrade cooling system: Bigger radiator, make sure the cooling is always good. Hugely important
2. Premix: premix 2 stroke oil into the gas anytime you fill up, just put .50oz per gallon. If it needs to be inspected, don't premix or you'll fail emissions.
Those cars are classics and honestly you would be able...

They're pretty indestructible as long as you aren't an idiot, the 3mm seals in the 12A are STRONG. Where are you located?

So you want something worse than a 1988 civic? Has less torque when you need it the most

I'm going to get some rage from non americans here, but fuck it. Here goes.
I really like the new porsche 911 turbo. I'm going to buy one next year.
The one thing i don't like is the engine, which is powerful yes, but a 6 cyl and also has IMS problems (google it if you don't know).
My plan (yes i know it will be expensive) is to swap in a LSX giving me a delicious american v8, more power and more reliability.
Now i've done some research on google and it seems there's a few LS swapped Porsches and ontop of that, they've...

stop being dumb
the metzger engine is literally god tier
>>14137503
You'd be better off swapping something that actually has the IMS bearing problem, like a 996 or a 1st gen Boxster. You'd be wasting a perfectly good flat-six turbo.
>>14137516
Porsche shill detected.
OP is right about the IMS bearing problems, they even affect new ones.
Anyway it seems like his concern is v8 sound, not that kettle of fish.
opinions are very welcome
looks cool Id be worried about hitting the rear tire tho

Alright guys, I have narrowed down my car search to these two, assume they cost roughly the same. Which one would you choose and why?
The Mustang is an Ecoboost Premium and the Subaru is a WRX Premium
>>14135321
>I have narrowed down my car search to these two
you arent getting either
you probably arent even old enough to post here
the cars are hardly comparable anyway
shitpost on /b/ instead pls
I'd prefer the WRX. If I was getting a mustang, it would be V8 or nothing. The non-V8s depreciate like milk, and I mean, it's a muscle car, the point is to have a big loud rumbling V8 and go fast in a straight line. I think an I4 mustang just misses the point of the car.
Whereas with the WRX you have a nice 4 door Sedan that you can actually fit people in the back with, go down dirt roads with, do well in the snow, and it will hold its value better. Plus the point of the WRX has always been a 4 cylinder rally car, and even though the modern WRX aint no GC8 WRC...

get a baseline 5.0. easier to modify. And you will get more out of it. and mpg is about the same.

So, celebrating that just today after a long time trying to get it, i finally fully understand the functioning of manuel transmision, i wanted to revisit the advantages vs disadvantages of helical vs straight gears. However, no matter how many places i searched about the answer, no one could give me an actual solid logical answer, so i want to know if anyone here could enlighten me, even if it is for a little.
Taking the sound factor aside, Straight heads are able to place the same amount of torque over another rotating gear over a bigger amount of space, right? Doesn't...

There is no reason to not go with helical cut gears.
I did the whole straight cut gear thing when I was younger to a WRX I had because I thought it sounded cool. It was a waste of money and did not give me any advantage, I should of just rebuilt it with helical gears and the helical gears were cheaper because of less demand.
Straight gear the same and material as a helical gear can't stand as much torque. The helical allows for smoother torque transfer and distributes the torque over a larger area. That saps more energy though. Race cars don't run straight cut gears for strength (although an aftermarket straight cut gear is usually stronger than a cast OEM gear). They run them because they sap less energy.
>>14137568
I'm probably getting this wrong, but I remember someone saying that straight cut puts less stress on the case. It's more advantageous to a point to do that than to reinforce it.
