>Josh MacDowell, combined a Stirling engine – first created by a clergyman in Scotland 200 years ago – with thermopile technology that converts heat energy into electricity.

>Internal combustion engines currently used in cars only use 14 per cent of the energy they produce, but Stirling's engine design can use almost 50 per cent

>MacDowell is using a Stirling engine, coupled with thermopile technology to make it possible to drive a Hybrid electric car and never have to stop to charge it

>MacDowell obtained a Stirling engine from NASA.

>His next plan, is to use his current engine in an SUV, starting on the east coast of the US, and driving to California - a journey around 2000 miles long.

>However, with his engine, he believes he can make the trip on less than 40 gallons of fuel.

1. it's a hoax - he fades to obscurity

2. it's real - he dies, the engine is bought from his children
>>
it's 42.5 Km per Litre

I suppose it'd be possible to add a KERS on the braking system and a PV solar panel on the roof to reach 50 Km/l
>>
>in b4 he crashes and dies mysteriously

Auto companies are gonna make him an offer he can't refuse and then just hoard the technology so no one can access it.

You really think they will let this exist and destroy their business?
>>
>>52202
>destroy their business
They can sell more cars by taking the engine design and advertising better fuel efficiency.
>>
>>52216
But then how would they get the innocent people of the world to contribute to their destruction of mother earth?
>>
>>52202
You mean oil companies
>>
>>52171
Assuming this isn't bullshit, he is going to be killed and his invention "found to be nonsense" or he will sell off the patent and the oil companies will make it go away.

>He could just leak the blueprints online.

Though lots of people have figured this out they were either silence or bought out.

Allegedly the Sherman tank in WWII had carburetor that did something very similar. It increases their range and and reduced their fuel consumption giving them a serious tactical advantage over the German Tigers, whom had far superior armor and firepower. That's how we swept through North Africa, allegedly. (note this was from my dad who's been bartending since the 70s and has talk to many vets).

Why the fuck would auto companies care?
Oh no this nice, untested engine is going to make our cars look even more eco-friendly. Oh the humanity.
>>
>>52268

The shermans that "swept through north africa" were superior/more recent/more advanced than a lot of the early model panzers they fought in north africa.

Not every german tank was a tiger

The only advantage a sherman had over a tiger, was that there were many orders of magnitude more shermans made than there were tigers.

They didn't have any fancy technology carburetors.

Not to mention, that depending on which Sherman you are talking about, some didn't have Carbs at all but fuel injection because of Diesel engines used.

M4 = Gasoline
M4A1 = Gasoline
M4A2 = Diesel for the Marines.
M4A3 (the best model for power to weight ratio and reliability) = V8 Ford GAA block Gasoline engine. Most common variant, was even used by the Canadians & Brits.
M4A4 = a better Diesel.

The GAA block Ford V8 used Stromburg aircraft carbs, since the GAA was originally designed for aircraft use, but Ford won the ground engine contracts instead while Allison & Packard won the V12 aero engine contracts.

> In his model, the Stirling engine runs at a fixed RPM generating electricity that is used to charge the batteries, which drive motors that propel the vehicle.

There's some really suspicious bullshit going on here. There's no reason for the battery and electric motor unless he thinks he can get more energy out of the battery than he's putting into it. He's already got mechanical energy from the Sterling engine that could drive the car on its own. If the battery charger and electric motor were 100% efficient the electric motor would output the same amount of mechanical energy as the sterling engine produces. They're significantly less than 100% efficient, so he's designed a "highly efficient system" that wastes a lot of energy for no adequetly explained reason.

>fixed rpm
>wasting energy

I'm guessing the battery stores all that lost potential from revving and idling. Not to mention acceleration and carrying a load are the most consumption intensive in terms of fuel economy.

Yeah, you're not ever going to get more energy out of the system than you put in, but you probably get quite a performance boost for the higher energy cost - real world driving as opposed to constant throttle, low speed on a flat surface with no obstructions.

I mean we'd all get better mileage if we just backed off the throttle. Otherwise why would any electric hybrid ever be considered, ever?
>>
>>54442
Uhh... you lose everything but idling with an electric motor too. This can be avoided in a gasoline engine by not idling.
