kids are getting dumb and lazy because schools make them feel smart by doing shit like this
My graduation ceremony was the only extracurricular school function that I attended in high school, and I wish I'd skipped it and just partied with my friends. Public schools, especially in Texas, are just minimum security prisons, and pretending that graduation is some kind of achievement is just dumb. Congratulations, you managed to wait it out.
As far as the PC bullshit goes, this kind of thing is deeply disturbing at universities, but public high schools do not have any academic integrity to be compromised.

This. I graduated from a Texas high school. Took all honors and AP classes while I was there, but slept through most of them and skipped the rest. Never studied and half-assed most projects too. I made it out with a 3.75, which was still more than 85% of my classmates, some of whom actually tried. That's pretty horrible.

The admin were over zealous in all of these cases, but to pretend this is about anything other than admin being dipshits and unwilling to bend the rules is absurd. It isn't news in the slightest.
I was almost sent home for not wearing the right type of shoes at graduation. Some admin was trying to be a dick. I'm not going to cry to the paper about it.

It's really weird when older people complain "Oh, everyone gets a medal these days!" as if it means shit to the kids getting them. A medal is meaningless when everyone gets one, and pulling that shit just dilutes the value of winning a real one. What kind of faggot gets a participation ribbon and thinks they earned it? Literally no one.
There's no such thing as 'everybody wins'. When everybody wins, that just means everybody loses by default. This kind of thing doesn't breed overconfident kids who think they're awesome just for existing, because no one is that fucking retarded just because someone hands them a useless ribbon. What this does is breed insecure idiots who have no clue how to succeed because it's been rendered impossible to do so.
