The 50's culture didn't really end until 1965 with Vietnam and accessible birth control, and things got notably better despite the chaos that gets plastered all over revisionist documentaries. The invisible hand is a myth, because we live in a land of investigative journalism and federal banking. It takes government forces to make capitalism a viable system, because a laissez-faire system always decays into oligarchy and authoritarianism. That's why Germany has some very intense campaign financing laws. The "invisible hand" as you call it nearly destroyed Europe twice. They cannot afford to let it happen again. Only Americans are being fooled into thinking it can work, because they have been spared in the past due to continuous war driving the economy. Europe enjoys freer markets to a degree because of a much stricter litigation process like the guy above you said.
