There were prevention measures such as controlled burns and hacking out dead wood in place, but then environmentalists supposedly got up in arms about the carbon emissions involved in a controlled burn and railed against the Alberta government to leave dead wood in the forests because "the earth would take care of it". Now those same environmentalists have remained pretty quiet while this has been going on.

Well we had similar shit happen in Australia sixteen years ago, with greenies preventing backburning until it led to a bushfire that scoured the region.
We've backburnt regularly since, and any calls to stop backburning have been laughed out.
