Except the overwhelming trend in American politics in the last 100 years has been for power to be moved from an increasingly nonfunctional congress to the hands of an ever-expanding executive branch. The real issue is that the president CAN single-handedly rescue or destroy the country.
The only real drawback to the president's power is the fact that the very next president can simply overturn whatever his predecessor did, since things like executive actions aren't nearly as lasting as actual laws passed by congress.
