Fusion reactors can't blow up.
>>
>>21108
what if you bomb them
>>
>>21113
Then they break. They don't blow up, but they are Blown up.

That's actually pretty cool.

I can't believe I will see fusion reactors in my lifetime

pretty much a non story,

these things take a shitload of power to run

until they can generate electricity with it (which this model cant), and tie the power consumption into the generation

then any extra power is free power, huzzah!

I really, really hope you got kicked in the head as a child, you can't possibly be this fucking ignorant naturally.

Fun fact retards: it takes more fucking oil to build these things than the average car uses in 25 years (source: MIT Tech Review May 2014).

Have fun with your bullshit counter-productive hippie shit. It's all pointless. Either A.I. will take over the world, environment becomes unlivable thanks to global warming, or zika takes down the entire planet. Nothing matters anyway, death is the truest form of existence considering your dead state was around long before you were born and will be around for trillions of years after you die. You faggots are delusional.

You are clearly a fucking retard if you're afraid of fucking Zika.

Zika is purged from the body within 6 weeks of contact, so if a woman had it for 6 weeks then got pregnant, her baby would be fine.

At the very fucking most, Zika would be a way of keeping the poor population under control, as the 1st worlders have obvious means/education to subvert the negative effects of Zika.

Moreover, it can only survive where mosquitos survive, so countries like Norway are completely fucking safe, AND mosquitos don't exist year round in most territories, so you're looking at a full 6 months of "good to go" time, leaving only a 3 month liability time in pregnancies, which may or may not even be able to affect a 6 month developed fetus.

Get your fucking head out of your ass our pseudo intellectual high school drop out atheist edge lord cuck.

Anti-fusion shills are the worse. I hate the fusion circlejerk, it's not nearly as ideal, but it's still a very promising energy source by any metric.

The only mayor drawback is reactor lifetime, and try to squeeze the most out of it, and avoid the degradation of the components.
But unlike EVERY FUCKING other energy source, it's virtually limitless.
Fossil energy output is linearly proportional to burnt material, and even if science makes the efficiency of the process asymptotically 100%, your main limitation is still the prime matter.
With solar and wind, you still need to cover large areas with metal, and the same applies: even with asymptotical perfection, by design you are bounded by the are you can harvest.
Fision is somewhat in-between, but the waste is a headache to say the least, even with Thorium.

But is beyond me that people waste their lifes argueing against fusion. It's the only source where most of the waste comes from the infrastructure itself. Where the problem is that there is so much energy to begin with that it's difficult to take it without eroding the reactor away. Where operation, contention and convertion is the main burden, not energy.

It's a dream of scalability.
>>
>>21214
>But unlike EVERY FUCKING other energy source, it's virtually limitless.

i agree fusion is absolutely important and that we need to continue developing the technology, but thorium reactors are a criminally under-funded and under-researched technology that will likely give us virtually endless power in the immediate future. even if thorium reactors wind up not being quite as lucrative as evidence suggests it may be, it'll still be a fantastic option for nuclear power that we need to be investing in now.
>>
>>21155
you are fucking retarded
>>
>>21156
>>21144
He's absolutely right though. The problem with our current technology and understanding of physics isn't creating plasma, it's using the process of nuclear fusion to harness energy, which as far as i know nobody has ever found a suitable theoretical solution for.

Would've been better if you read the fucking article instead of spouting insults

Don't you mean the average use of 25 cars in 1 year?

That's like giving a license to 25 people and then they drive. Wow, that is a scary thought. Good thing that doesn't happen... oh wait.
>>
>>21125
They already exist, and run for fractions of a second to several seconds (or longer?), iirc.
What they DON'T do yet is produce more power than is needed to start the reaction and maintain the confinement (magnetic field, etc).
>>
>>21129
Packing? Unpacking? Insulation for when the metal is all at "bloody cold" temperature?
>>
>>21136
Gots to develop tech somehow, man. Or do you think everything you buy is invented in the stock room?
>>
>>21273
'Harness' would be heat exchange, like other (nuclear, coal, gas) generators, wouldn't it? Take the heat from the plasma chamber surrounding and use it to turn water into steam, etc, etc.
>>
>>21136
this. achieving nuclear fusion isn't new. what's interesting is if you can get more energy out of it than what you put in.
>>
>>21159
>it takes more fucking oil to build these things than the average car uses in 25 years
is that supposed to be a lot?

Sorry fampai but socialism only works in homogeneous societies (which are generally smaller than most countries too). Socialism could never work in the usa. It barely works here in canada and most people are fed up with it

They have existed but have not been able to produce more energy than they consumed, it obviously was not a viable means for creating electricity, we just keep working working on the tech. but haven't efficiently utilized it yet.
>>
>>21180
Bro, you just made me realize, I must be stupid, just how many more 3rd worlders die than us.
>>
>>21136
still a big advancement
>>
Good news, energy is the most important factor to the progress of technology and humanity as a whole. Its just a shame that sometimes politics steps on the toes of its progress a perfect example being the killing of the molten salt reactor program which if Nixon would have left alone would have had the US with 100% energy independence and energy so cheap that technology would be improving much quicker than the current rate. The unrealized potential of that tech to this day is still amazing. Regardless good news, and if we want to bridge the gap between fusion and today's energy (as its always '50 years' away) thorium and molten salt reactors are the missing link.
>>
They don't blow up, they blow in...

A fission reactor is a run away exothermic reaction... When this thing is perfected we will drop the ICE... Like Mr T.... pity the fool
>>
>>21099

Fusion reactors are safe for the most part.
As soon as they are damaged, they can't create the magnetic bottle to contain the pressure, and they flame out.

There is no radioactive fuel to cool or contain.

If a reactor explodes, it'll kill people in the building maybe if catastrophic enough, but nothing worse than a gas leak explosion.
>>
>>21973
>If a reactor explodes, it'll kill people in the building maybe if catastrophic enough, but nothing worse than a gas leak explosion.
Tell me what could create an explosion big enough for that ?
Magnets don't explode. The Vessel doesn't have any gas, it's vacuum.
The "cooling" system is made of 80K helium gas.

Most parts are actually made to resist 150 million K. (The divertors are made to sustain a heat flux of 20MWm2)

The Machine is made to CONTAIN something 10 times hotter than the sun. Fucking CONTAIN, not explode, or create, or anything, it's CONTAIN.

So I'm asking you again ? Where does your explosion come from ?

>>
>>23599
the steam stuff is just a way to convert the heat into electricity. nuclear power provides the heat.

it's the /fanciest/ steam power
