The EU is the embodiment of the Political social class that has arisen since the fall of the wall. Politics has been reduced to a desk job, no more is it a calling, no more do people with vision and brains become politicians. No, it has been left to people with more vain ambition than smarts. You get paid brain surgeon money and get counted among the elite just by spouting buzzwords and do a bit of paperwork.

This has had a terrible effect on Democracy since a lost election for a party means many people will be out of a job (many literally have no other qualifications), and so ideology has come to mean less and less, and opportunistic populism has become the norm. Merkel and Germany in general is the Number 1 offender of that. Just look at how they banned AfD (real right-wing) from a televised debate because they KNEW they have facts on their side.

And so is the case in the EU. The European Parliament is the lifeblood of many company lobbyists and their crooked friends. No EU, means the political elite needs to look for a new job, and they are not willing to let that happen, but would rather run roughshod and burn every citizen in western and eastern europe to avoid it.
