if we're being honest, as someone studying cybersecurity and computer forensics in higher education -- the type of people it attracts don't care about ur fetish porn you downloaded last month. many are emotionally devoid savants and many more yet don't shower. obviously the NSA had a kickstart rise to power with the patriot act, and power is a great time, especially when you can get away with secrecy of ethically questionable shit. at this point though? it really sounds like the true focus is counter terrorism. the NSA isn't staffed by enough analysts to sift through everything you do, even if they have scripts and programs to log it all anyways. you need to be suspected of terrorism / a threat to national security / cyberterrorism to raise any eyebrows.

alternatively, if another federal agency (such as the DEA) has a lead on you then the NSA might cooperate with giving them your information. if you keep your weirdo activities cybernetic and not offensive to the IRS, DEA, FBI, CIA, and NSA then nobody's after you.
