Why do ships have names
Why do planes not have names

Some ideas:
1. Planes are more similar per model. While two cruise ships of similar design will have notable variations, aircraft have generally little more except interior modification. [Engine selection being something generically reproducable.]
2. Planes are more modern and to some degree mass-produced even during WW1. Tiny little boats often go without names too.
3. I think I had another actual answer to your question, but as a point of interest Pan Am [with a strong naval influence] did name their planes.
Didn't Pan-Am planes have names? (Clipper _______)
