I've been looking for an alternate source of exercise and I liked riding my mountain bike as a kid through the woods until some shit stick stole it. Anyways, I've been looking into getting into mountain biking. I know it's expensive but so are a lot of things, I can work on it over time. Anyone have any advise or experience with mountain biking and what some suggestions on bikes/gear would be?
I'm not sure if it makes a difference for the bike itself but I'm 6'4 240lb.

Hit up /bbg/ if you have specific questions. When you ask them post your height, plan, budget, local craigslist. Depending on how off road you want to go you could swing a non-MTB specific frame with big tires or you might want something a little bit more specialized (ie front suspension or full suspension).

get you a 29er hardtail to start with. regular platform pedals, any old skate shoe, a good extended-coverage helmet (DO NOT skimp on this), some full-fingered gloves and maybe kneepads if you're going to get frisky right off the bat.
also get some bike shorts with a good chamois. do not skimp on these, either. just... trust. you want these.
THIS is a 29er Hardtail (29-inch wheels, front suspension only hence 'hard tail'), but it is really fucking expensive. Get a less expensive model unless you're a dentist or something.

I got my bike from a police auction for 200$ complete with the wheelset, fork and decent drivetrain that I replaced with a single speed. So that's a good place to check too, because when I went there were a lot of other nice cheap bikes. Also is your comma key stickey?
