I'm looking for a new bike. Road bike isn't bad because I'll be using it for travel. Generally 1-5 miles sometimes up to 10. Won't be using it off road too much(if at all). I'm thinking about the GMC 25" Denali 700c. Good reviews and I know two people that own them. Also, I don't know too much about bikes.
I do currently have a bike but it just sucks, very hard to ride and the ballbearings around the handlebar area is breaking. I usually ride my brothers bike which is a Trek mountain bike, don't know off the top of my head. I have looked at craiglist, but most good cheap bikes are 80+ miles away.

With that kind of budget you're not going to get anything nice. If I were in your shoes and you really can't find anything better used, what I'd do would be to get a very simple hybrid bike from Walmart/Target/sporting goods chain/etc. and pay a bike shop (or someone you know who can work on bikes) to make sure the wheels are true and the bearings are all greased and adjusted properly BEFORE you ride on it. Treated properly these bikes still won't be great, but they will work reliably for at least a season of use (barring accidents, abuse, etc.).
I would avoid any of the really cheap 'road' bikes because those generally have some really horrible cost-cutting measures (like cutting drop bars in half so that they can accept twist shifters) and they're just not worth your time. Also, do not under any circumstance by any cheap bike with suspension - fewer moving parts is always better when it comes to cheap bikes, and cheap suspension parts don't work well even before they fail completely.
