Speaking of steel, are there any decent modern road frames you guys would suggest? I realized that I've probably got enough parts to build up another bike.
>>
some fine British stove pipe,
1967 Raleigh Sports
Sturmey Archer geared Three Speed

the Raleigh Factory made most of the bike and they had their own standards for headsets and bottom brackets (i.e. 26tpi instead of 24tpi) so these parts couldn't be interchanged with the higher quality Japanese (J.I.S.) parts that were compatible with the most other British Company's (B.S.I.) standards.

Other countries eventually fell in line with the J.I.S. standards. Italy used 26tpi but had a different screw pitch diameter. French made the most sense because it was all metric. Swiss was like French except the BB fixed cup threads were reversed.

TL;DR - summary - if you're buying a used bike frame, either get something from the 1980s or later because it will be compatible with the most commonly available parts

Plenty you can do with old hybrids anon.
My fave bike posted up on here was a 90's trek, i think a 720, that had been totally re-done with drops, some nice racks and fenders, different group etc - sadly the guy had it stolen recently.
People shit on these bikes as they're seen as just commuters - the geometry is often good for other stuff too though with plenty of clearance for fat ass tires, the steel is usually pretty decent, and having cantis is a bonus also.

Pinkbike guy here.

For starters, those are mini-V brakes, which are designed to work with road levers, instead of modern mountain bike levers. Mine are Paul Components, but TRP and Tektro both make nice ones.

They're really nice. Less finger effort, better modulation, and more stopping power than canti brakes. Downsides: they require setting the pads closer to the rim, so they're less forgiving of out-of-true rims, or mud buildup. The transverse cable ends up quite low over the tire, which means you can't easily use fenders.

Second, those aren't SIS levers. They're standard Tektro drop bar levers with bar end shifter mounted on them. Neat little product from Gevenalle. Much more robust that brifters, abet a little less convenient - you can only really shift from the hoods.

I'm not sure what >>958866 is doing, because those look like normal mountain V-brakes.

>>implying that everyone has the same body shape and seat preferences.
Except I didn't imply that.
>How exactly do I put the seat at the "correct" angle and "correct" height?
If you can't figure that out yourself, go to the LBS and ask for a bike fitting.
>>
>>959129
Isn't the reason those things are adjustable is because people have different body shapes? Therefore, wouldn't it be fair to assume that the position is correct if it fits me. Wouldn't the "correct" angle and "correct" height be the height and angle I find most comfortable yet efficient? The picture I posted is exactly that, so is therefore correct. Quit your trollin.
>>
>>959132
>Isn't the reason those things are adjustable is because people have different body shapes?
Yes.
>Therefore, wouldn't it be fair to assume that the position is correct if it fits me.
If it fits you well, yes.
>Wouldn't the "correct" angle and "correct" height be the height and angle I find most comfortable yet efficient?
Yes.
>The picture I posted is exactly that, so is therefore correct.
If, with a better saddle than that piece of shit, you feel like your 'ass was beat in with a sledge hammer', then no, the picture you posted is not exactly that. You should be able to do 100+ miles on a good saddle (as in, not a Brooks; Brooks are pure fucking shit), fuck, even 200 if your legs can handle it, without your ass hurting if your bike is adjusted correctly.
>>
>>959137
After I switched to the brooks saddle, my buttocks felt fine after long rides. It was pre-brooks that my buttocks did not feel fine. Brooks musta really burned you for you to have this sort of animosity. Did the brooks dude fuck your sister or mom or something? did the leather snap and castrate you? Whats wrong with a brooks saddle? for $40, it seems like a solid purchase on my end.
>>
>>959142
You're like those faggots that ride on the cushy saddles and ride beach cruiser "comfort" bikes, because those things are more comfortable WHEN AND ONLY WHEN the superior alternatives are not set up correctly, not sized correctly, not fitted correctly, etc.
>>
>>959145
Come on guy, lets hear a real argument against brooks saddles. I wanna know why my choice was shit, not how I'm just a beach cruiser loser. Do they break? Do they lose comfort? are they one gram to heavy? Not aerodynamic enough? Whats wrong with the brooks?
>>
>>959149

Nothing. The 'problem' is that a lot of retarded hipsters go for them for incredibly stupid reasons.

I personally never found them to be particularly bad/good saddles, outside of leather being a fucking terrible material to use with the climate in my area.

For the tandem, the Xtracycle is really nice when heading to the beach. It's very practical. It can easily haul more than what two people need for an afternoon. Regarding the brake cable (and the rear shifter cable for the internal hub), you can buy them on ebay all day long for under $10. Off the top of my head, the brake cable is 3500mm and the shifter cable is 4000mm.

I scored the pantographed chain ring on eBay. The listing had a slight error when the Italian guy translated into English so I was the only bidder.

My Paramount is a really nice ride. I have come to really enjoy the straight front fork and how precise the bike is.
>>

Yes, those are the VO Dajia Far bars. The OEM is Satori,it's their "Boondocks" bar. Origin 8 also re-sells them as a "Gary Ergo Sweep" bar, but they're all the same Satori Boondocks bar.

I like it a lot. It's a wee bit tricky to set up such that the drops at a comfortably horizontal angle while the hoods/ramps are still usable, but it's doable (Unlike, say, the Salsa Woodchipper). Up in the hooks is super stable for descending, even on rough and rooted trails.

For the price I would recommend, at the price point I was able to buy all the bags and camping stuff under budget. Only two complaints is one, there is no 3rd bottle mount. Is the the gap on the chainstays and the tire is somewhat tight so you have to be pretty careful when putting the rear tire in or it will rub hardcore. Also the rear eyelets are reversed from standard and that can also cause rubbing. Other than that I've put about 500ish miles on it so far. Just got it a few months ago, doing mostly weekend trips nothing major. It's pretty great and personally I love the classic touring look.

Yes. 700c wheels are 622 mm in diameter at the point where the bead seats onto the rim (this is the ISO designation commonly called the bead seat diameter or BSD). 27" wheels have a BSD of 630 mm.
Simple maths show that you would only need to move your brake pads down 4 mm to accommodate the new wheels (8 mm difference in diameter means that there is a 4 mm difference in radius). You might have to purchase new brakes if you cannot move the pads down far enough.
From your photo, it looks like you might have enough adjustment in the front and rear to make it work with your current brakes.
If your current brakes can't reach, consult your LBS or bike co-op on what to buy. I personally am a fan of Tektro's brake calipers for this kind of job, since they make them in a large range of reaches for both recessed and hex bolt mounting.

What's wrong with aluminium? Is it just the idea of somehow being more classic?
>>
>>961326
Steel flexes. Aluminium either doesn't budge or bends permanently. There's a reason they don't make aluminium springs.
>>
>>961413
>he actually believes this
>Tfw bent up rims and hubs and cranks and brakes and derailers and stems and bars
>>
>>961417
I never said you can't permanently bend steel.
>>
>>961413
So are you saying that flexible frames are a good thing? Even aluminium ones flex a minute amount (although less than steel) yet that doesn't cause them to snap.

I bet you think all carbon fibre is super fragile too.
>>
>>961413
You retard. Aluminium springs don't work because of fatigue. Steel can flex without fatigue while aluminium pretty much can't. Plasticity is not the issue and aluminium does not behave the way you describe.
>>
>>961421
How does it behave?
>>
>>961422
Like I described. The fatigue threshold is so low is can't handle much deformation without weakening. This is unrelated to the plasticity threshold, and aluminium flexes back as long as the deformation does not pass this limit. The problem is it's likely to have weakened in the process while steel wouldn't.

>>961419
>So are you saying that flexible frames are a good thing?

Yes, some flex is preferable for cyclists that ride for enjoyment and don't race at a professional level (which happens to include 99.6% of /n/).
>>
>>961424
>Steel can flex without fatigue while aluminium pretty much can't.

So it's behaving like I desctribed?
>>
>>961428

>>

I don't give a shit about word definitions. We described the same thing.
You push on a steel rod, it flexes to a point then goes back to its original shape. You push on an aluminium rod, it doesn't until it does.

>>961437
>We described the same thing.
No we didn't.
>You push on an aluminium rod, it doesn't until it does.
No, it doesn't behave that way. That would be a yielding behaviour. Aluminium has an almost immidiate fatigue threshold, not an immidiate yield threshold. Fatigue means it weakens. Not that it deforms. That's yield.
>I don't give a shit about word definitions.
I can tell. It means you're completely unable to form any understanding of anything or participate in any meaningfull conversation, because you take pride in not knowing what the fuck you're talking about.
Pic related.
>>
>>961437
Not true. All solid materials can flex to a certain extent without permanent plastic deformation, aluminium included. If that wasn't the case then aluminium frames would be stiffer than carbon fibre, infinitely so. They would not flex in the slightest and upon seeing forces that in real life causes them to flex they would instead shatter.

You don't absolutely need standover clearance but it's nice. You'd also be pretty stretched out on it reaching for those levers in the far distance.

It's not a great bike either.

how is a 58 cm frame too short for a 5' 11ยจ guy, seems to be about right.

It's my opinion that standover height clearance is not important only in the case of a pure road bike . If you intend to use the bike more like a light commuter clearance is more important as you will be coming to a full stop way more frequently and is very annoying to hit your balls everytime you do so

Looks more like a 60-62, certainly too big for you

If it's actually a 58cm frame, it would be about right for a 5'11" dude. But who the fuck knows how the seller measured "58cm/23inches". Looking at the height of the toptube over the wheels, and the length of that fuckin' mondo headtube, that is a BIG frame; I'm guessing probably 62cm+

If anything a 58 would be too big.

t. a 5' 11" (180 cm for you mr SI) dude

You need to work on your bike propping skills bruh.

Also aluminum definitely cracks, just a little slower than carbon.
