I really want to ride but the weather is bad and all I can do is train on my rollers. At the end of the week I think there will be a day without bad weather.
>>
>>954990
You should get a bad weather beater and go out riding in the rain. Feels great man.
>>
Finally got some rain today, air should be nice and crisp tomorrow. Hope it's sunny.
>>
I put new bearings in for my cranks because they were creaking and one felt a little rough.
I greased the hell out of everything
today it was still creaking loud enough to hear overtop the wind.
only ride 10 miles hoping it would chill out
Come home take it all apart regrease and check to make sure I seated the bearings correctly, everything looks ok
Get out the torque wrench and do it as properly as possible
creaking is still there with a little cruise around the block

where the fuck is the noise coming from
>>

don't worry about it

There is a noise my bike has been making that has been annoying me for quite some time. I'm pretty sure its the freehub. I can't find a decent price on those so I might take it apart and clean / re-lube it. I made a tool from a socket back in the fall when I overhauled my mountain bike freehub. Lots and lots of tiny bearings.
>>
>>955002
>>955022
Ahh, the good ol' ambiguous drivetrain noise. Let me guess, you can't even replicate the noise at home, pedaling by hand? I know that feel brah. Had a little *click!* coming from somewhere between my legs, drove me fucking insane, overhauled the whole damn thing and it was still there, and one day, as suddenly as it appeared, it went away. Fucking bikes, how do they work?

Almost ran over one of these little fuzzy bros yesterday, thankfully it was in the middle of a climb so I wasn't going too fast and could swerve in time.
>>
>>955024
Too many bike noises only present themselves under load. Almost need to put the bike on a trainer and have a second person listening.

I couldn't get the freehub body cap off, a chunk of it actually broke off without it loosening. The cassette lock ring seemed a little loose, but if that wasn't the problem I'll have to order a new freehub, a few decently priced ones on ebay. I had never serviced this XT hub before and turns out a 17 mm cone wrench is needed, so I had to go get one of those. And the freehub retaining bolt needs a massive 14 mm hex, but I had one of those in a set of impact hex sockets. I've ignored that hub not bothering to service it since I built the wheel over 8,000 km ago. But the seals have kept out all the dirt and it looked practically brand new inside.

>>
>>955130
Shit gets me so fucking mad.
Even though I hate getting wet on my way to the workplace I hate taking the bus on a hot, sunny day even more.
>>
>>955024
Yeah, it only shows up when I put some real power into pedalling. I just can't seem to reproduce it pin the work stand... at least I can make it show up in the parking lot but I don't like carrying my bike up and down a sweet of stairs every few minutes while I mess with this, and to heel with bringing all my tools down stairs.

Just came back from a 26km offroad ride to test out my new pedals! They're good, had fun.
I live in Rome but I'm lucky enough to be 5 minutes away from a big park that, while not particularly aimed at MTB stuff, it has some pretty fun xc trails - there are a couple of interesting drops and climbs, mixed in with plenty of fun single/doubletrack

The good
>it rained yesterday, so there was a bit of mud and people didn't invade the park like a horde of angry drunk russians as they usually do
>I didn't crash, but built up enough confidence to go near my limits a couple of times and recovered a nasty slide
>pedals are really sticky! Even with wet feet they didn't let go

The weird
>these tyres, while not meant for mud, clear shallow mud really well... by launching it directly at your face. Like, mechs are quite damn clean, but it launched mud all over the frame and myself. Kek

The bad
>no hot running qt's
>gotta clean the bike but it's going to rain so it'll have to wait
>some guys were practicing tree climbing or some shit like that, and decided to plant some improvised fencing around their practice area with 1cm thin metal spikes. If I see them again I'm going to give them a piece of my mind about how fucking dangerous that shit is. If someone slid and fell on those, he'd fucking die.

Pedals are Wellgo DMR V12's copy. They're heavy, but definitely a good set of flats.

You stupid fuck. He wasn't concerned about them climbing the trees. He was concerned about the fencing they put up around the trees with spikes on them.
>>
>>955269
Maybe im just stupid.
On the other hand why the fuck would THEY put the fencing if they would fall on it themselves?
>>
>>955270
I have no idea, I have doubts it was them, but they had two vans and shit and I've never seen the fence before... maybe they were cutting shit from the tree. No idea, I'll investigate further if I find the fence again, I guess.

Not daily, but I ride my bike to see my grandma several days every week, it saves me time and a decent amount of money (around12euro/week). On weekends y use my road bike to do 45-70km routes, so every week at least I cycle 4-5 days.

Only got up to 3 °C today with wind gusting to 50 km/h, so day number 5 with no riding. Same wind tomorrow, but a little warmer so I'll try to get out for a ride.

20-25 km thrice a week mostly around the forests for the purpose of sightseeing I guess.

I do 15 km commuting every day, another 15 km when I go out drinking on Fridays, then about 50-70 km on Saturdays and MAYBE another 30-50 km on Sundays if I feel like it.

But, I've only just started the non-commuting part 3 months ago, so I'm constantly extending the Saturday ride.

I raced a dog today.

I was riding when I heard that cute sound of dogfeet, looked next to me and there was a dog running right next to me. I started to accelerate slowly as the owner yelled in the background. The based dog kept running right next to my bike and only gave up when I started to get into the 42/43kph zone.

Never had a bigger smile on my face than right after that and looking back at the poor dog staring me down while puffing out on the cycling lane. Must have been over 1km away from the owner, should probably have brought the dog back lel. He probably found his way back though, dogs are fucking based

>>
>>955855
not the one you are replying to but last year I stopped when a rotty or maybe it was a mix or something chased straight at me while riding through a huge open field.
I stopped because I found that dogs are confused by people who stand their ground.
The owner is all apologetic and whatnot and I start petting the dog and bsing with the owner...
it just reached full grown so it was still a pup.
as soon as I stopped paying attention to the dog and stopped petting him he bit my leg.
fortunately I was wearing mtn biking shorts that day and he never broke the skin but still.
>>
Just cut off a car...twice. I looked over my shoulder and we were going pretty much the same speed, so I merged into his lane and all I heard was squeaking breaks, so I moved back into my lane and heard the breaks squeak again.

I'm just happy he didn't honk me. It was my fault, I should have signaled.

Loose cassette lockring was the culprit, noise finally gone.

My reward for not having ridden since last weekend was an extra high HR today. Pinch flatted hopping up onto a curb while waiting for someone to join me.

A guy I rode with is having some odd intermittent drive chain issues. I think its so sort of chain suck on the chainring since I saw his rear derailleur pulled all the way forward, and he dumped the chain into his spokes last weekend. He installed a new chainring and a KMC chain last week so its probably one or a combination of those causing it.

One of the first rides of the year, only did 38km because i was expecting an important call which came in the middle of a big slope that was killing me. When I finished the call, my clothes were wet and I was cold, so I decided to come back because it was kinda late for a longer ride. Tomorro I will ride more, I need it because I need to regain my form. I took a pic to the river because it had more water than usual because the fucking weather that made made me stay at home with my rollers.

How the fuck do you people find these fire roads? Is there some online map? There's nothing I love more than riding down a dirt road.

Anyway, here's how my ride sunday went:
>riding at secluded gravel trail no one knows about, usually only one or two other people there fishing at the trailhead
>get to the most isolated part of the trail out in the woods
>about to go down a huge descent
>then I see some hillbilly motherfucker standing at the bottom right in the middle of the trail with something in hand
>its a fucking machete
>and he's staring straight at me
>fuck that
>my shit ass brake pads are somehow able to stop me at the start of this downhill
>turn around and speed the hell out of there

Before I met him I was able to get a good hour of gravel grinding in so it's all good. Someone actually got stabbed there a couple of years ago. Maybe he was just cutting trees or some shit, but I'm not gonna take any chances out in the middle of nowhere with a guy wielding a machete.

Hey I bought my rear wheel at that shop during a tour. My Suntour Accushift group catastrophically failed a few miles outside of town (freewheel started ratcheting in both directions) so I ziptied the big cog to my spokes and fixied into town. Luckily the shop was still open, and I bought the guy's handbuilt XT-Dyad wheel and installed it out front of the shop. Finished my tour by riding into SF the next morning.

Yeah fenders would be interesting. I'm not sure how they'd hold up on a full trail/mountain bike, but they'd be great if I was just riding fire roads. Might have to ditch the mini-Vs for canti brakes, or modify the fenders...

>>956721
This wasn't a major fire road, just a connector at the far end of a singletrack MTB trail. I mostly ride this bike on rougher trails (hence the tires) but it RIPS on fire roads.

Yeah, Mike's a great guy, and a good wheelbuilder - he did the wheels on my pink bike. BTW, that's a sweet looking bike! SON generator hub, right? I've always been curious; why do people mix a mini-V up front with a canti brake in the back?

these assholes were just screwing around on the cycling lane and they did not even acknowledge my presence. I rang my bell at them but they did not care. I have no experience with horses besides GIFs of people getting their shit kicked so I was afraid to go anywhere close, but in the end I just rode through centimeters away from them and they still did not acknowledge me, they are full on living in their own horse world it seems. I dont think they are supposed to be there anyway, probably escaped or something.
>>
Went down one of my favorite gravel roads. I like it because there isn't much gravel so it gets packed smooth and I can maintain a higher cruising speed on it than many of the asphalt roads. Today they dumping truck after truck of gravel on it :(

horses are cool, I mean I don't like them much, but they're cool and quiet animals. The fucky ones are easily noticeable, just ride away from those. I've never seen a horse give chase and fuck someone up, all the accidents I've seen involved people getting too much freedom (fast movements and too much touching without respect) near horses and getting their shit bitten or kicked.

Ended up on a 60 km ride last night.averaged about 18-19 km/h. Three quarters of the ride was pain. My butt and perineum were still tender on the short ride to the store today.
How do into proper bike fit and saddle? Or do i just need to harden the fuck up?

>>

>How do into proper bike fit and saddle? Or do i just need to harden the fuck up?
Both. You need to get accustomed to sitting on a saddle. That said, there shouldn't be much pressure on the soft stuff. That means you have too much padding, a saddle that is too narrow, or sitting too far forward. The last can be because you either have a saddle that's too wide, or one that's too level or tilted down. Tilting the saddle back can help you sit furter back without sliding forwards and somewhat counter-intuitively lessen the pressure on your taint.
There are also saddle fit programs you can run at some of the better bike dealers.

why do you care about what people will think so much? Admittedly, cycling was always criticised without good reason by the general public, but that should encourage you to give even less fucks. They don't even have to be cycling glasses, I'm rocking pic related every day(and night!). Going down a steep hill is so comfy, not to mention safer, when you can actually see what's on the road.
>>
>>958007
Idk, seems like a lot in any case. I'm averaging 25km in just about over 1 hour of normal trail riding with a bit more climbing than descending, that'd put me in the 5 hours mark for that distance, I can imagine 8 hours, 9 even with all the climbing... But 12?
I ride a budget 26er hardtail btw.

I average a lot less than you do on a 700c hybrid on roads. And it's iffy to assume you can ride with the same intensity in your fourth hour as your first. Depending on how strong you are.
>>
I got off work early today so I went for a longer ride. I rode into the wind with the thought that on the way back I would have a nice tailwind to assist me... it sort of worked up until the last 15ish or so miles, then enough wind shifted to be a headwind again.

If you don't feel any kinship with other cyclists why do you 'help' people on /n/?

IMO if you don't stop and ask cyclists if they're ok, then you're either an autist (ok, cool) or an asshole. They're probably just gonna be fine and having a rest, but if they've had an accident or can't fix something or you give them a tube or someone nearly killed them or they're lost then a tiny bit of help can be huge.

Ok, sure, don't acknowledge one of the thousands of cyclists in a city, but if you're out riding a route in the mountains or something and you see one fucker every half hour going hard then you smile at that cunt and share a bit of love with the world.

>it actually works but I still don't know if it was a coincidence or not
This has happened twice and I feel awkward both times. Why can't I just not be the first to arrive at the lights. Tfw I will never know if there is a weight trigger there unless I go there are 3am when there are no cars around to test it.
Tfw still getting used to navigating cagers. It's really annoying to make turns where you have to change to the inside lane and cross over. If it's possible I plan my loops so that I don't have to cross over the road.
>>
>>958311
I don't know where you live, but a lot of traffic lights these days use induction loops. You can see scores in square shapes in the bitumen. Assuming your bike and wheels aren't 100% carbon you should be able to trigger it by sitting in the middle.
>>
>>958311
>>958312
or put a few neodymium magnets under your bike
>>
>>958312
>You can see scores in square shapes in the bitumen.
I'll look. But I don't really remember seeing any squares, or any markings at all. I don't know if they are in my area or even common in Australia.
>>
>>958311
Just cross when the lights are switching
>>
>>958312
What works for me is placing my wheels directly on top of the cutout, so usually on the left edge of it. Sitting in the center doesn't work.
>>
>>958327

The induction loops need less maintenance if they aren't just on a timer, so I would be surprised if they don't use them where you are. My aluminum frame doesn't set them off if I sit in the middle though, I need to kinda cross the whole thing to do it.

Two windy rides in a row. Yesterday 40 km/h and I thought it would be a good idea to do a 40 km loop on the open prairie.

Gusting to 60 km/h today so I decided to stay in the city where it wasn't too bad. We went out on the highway for a little bit to see how bad the wind was. Just as we passed a construction site they started pile driving steel beams which is incredibly loud.

60km ride total (30 and 30) to the beach, with a group of friends+some critical mass-like ride

When catching up on them, as I was like 30 minutes behind due to me not waking up, I fucked up on a curb at fairly moderate speed (20-25kmh) and the bike flipped over. I managed to jump off unscathed but I fucked my new (used, but like new) saddle. Goddamn. Just patched up with a bit of tape, but still sucks.
Also when the bike flipped it scraped nicely on the stem, but that doesn't bother me.

Apart from that little fuck up it all went well. The tyres held up with no issues which is great considering my curb accident (and that I accidentally ran over a broken glass bottle, too) - these shits might be a little more expensive than average but fuck they're nice. (Conti RaceKing ProTection 2.2)

bonus fun fact: obligatory obnoxious land whale during the ride kept being insulted by every motorist in the area as she swerved into the lane, kek.

Oh, just seen that post. Those pedals have been really great, I think the right one was the "starting point" of the flip when it hit the curb at speed. Paint and metal are pretty scraped but it's just cosmetic damage, the pedals are really wonderful and sturdy. The paint does flake off a bit too easily, but I honestly don't care.

I found a CX paradise. There are huge, gravely, dirty, sandy loops almost as far as the eye can see

No it was a spinal injury caused by a traffic pig fucking accident that left him crippled.... the retardation is from the meth he smoked.... hence the pig fucking to support his habit. It's a vicious cycle
>>
>>961217
Tragic*

Had a nice 60 km ride, broke my speed record.

Now that I have a road bike and padded shorts, the lycra bullies don't laugh at me anymore.
>>
>>961319
Was the lycra bullying real or imagined
>>
>>961322
probably just a figment of my imagination

But people look really judgemental when I can see the complete contours of their penis yet can't see their eyes because of the flashy 300$ sunglasses.
>>
>>961325
People like that are too focused on their own thing to give a shit about judging you.

Or they're Freds, in which case: who gives a shit about what they think.
>>
99.8 miles today.... well so much for a 1st century.. awesome day though. Next time I go on that long of a ride I will make sure to eat a little more solid food. Bananas, gel packets and water just left me feeling empty around the 80 mile mark.

Long lonely country rode. Doing about 18 mph. Old guy rolls up on me like I'm standing still.

>where you headed anon? Oh me? I'm on mile 70 of a century.

Fuuuuuuuuuck. Drops me like an old habit. So much old man respect.
