I saw one of these beasts in a campground in Colorado. The German owner said he had shipped in into the US by boat after traveling in South America. It's seems like it's more for crossing the Sahara than off-roading in the US. Anybody know anything about them?
Off-roading in the US is generally a sport.
Off-roading in most other places is generally just what you have to do to get from a to b.
Those are not specifically for Sahara crossing and even then that doesn't seem kitted for it at all.
Terrain in certain parts of the US can resemble terrain in other temperate countries which the unimog is primarily used.
It all depends on your purpose.
Eg. If you want to go mudding then why would you spend all that money on importing a unimog and not some beater half ton and throw super swampers and diff locks on it?

The weight alone on those things makes them not particularly great off road compared to a lot of other vehicles. If you're using it as kind of an overgrown camper it's fine I guess, but there are much better vehicles for the purpose.
Unimog means universal motor gadget.
It's not a fun vehicle. Its a serious workhorse.

They are amazingly popular in Europe. I see them all the time. Most all of them are converted to some kind of /out/ or SHTF /k/ vehicle.
For me it's a toss up of owning one of these or a pre-Discovery 4-door Land Rover. Both have plentiful spare parts support and both can be serviced out in the middle of nowhere.

>Cum back after your shift bby, and plow my wet little Unimog

OP: In talking to the owner, he told me that he was in the area because there was only one mechanic in the entire US who could work on a Unimog and that was in La Junta, Colorado. That's a small town of about 7500 near the New Mexico border. I know some expedition-type tour companies use rigs like that, but for one guy it seems a bit much. ]

The owner is an idiot, or he only wants 'certified' monkies to work on it.

Traffic authority's tramway quick response monster truck.
I've wondered why they deemed it necessary to own this instead of a normal van like they used to, but maybe it's because of the reduction gear so it can be used for towing.
>>950495
You're fucking retarded. Those things are some of the best offroad vehicles money can buy. Along with old defenders and Toyota's they're pretty much the only vehicle that is Africa-ready.

Choo choo.
It's a tractor disguised a as a truck. PTO both ends and an infinite selection of toys to drive from them.
Not bad if a bit agricultural if you need a DD.

enjoy going broke on gas and not reaching/barely reaching highway speed
>>953312
Your DD and my DD are clearly operating in different locations. :)

Their entire purpose from the outset was to work off road. They excel at it. They've won Dakar plenty of times and were used extensively as the support vehicles. To claim they're "not particularly great off road" displays a level of ignorance of which you'd probably have been better off keeping your whore mouth shut.

>enjoy going broke on gas
Why would you run it on gas and not diesel? That sounds like something retarded only an American would think of.
>>953398
>enjoy going broke on diesel
I'm a yurogfag so here diesel costs less than in america, but still, it's plenty expensive for such a fuel guzzler.
Unless you cheat with agricultural diesel, but that's illegal.
>>953415
100 km/20 litres empty at the vehicle's top speed doesn't seem bad for a such vehicle. Your average American pickup truck is going to have worse fuel economics than that.

Really, I thought the prices for diesel and petrol are almost identical in the US?
In some locations of eurofaggotry diesel is taxed more leniently, but then there also is a special diesel vehicle tax that maybe quite stringent.

cool, my stepdad let me drive his unimog when I was 12, later when I was in the army I drove Unimogs again. Overhere (in Germany) they are utility rather than sports vehicles.

Ive been in one. It was just the tray-back model and it was gutless. If you want to have fun off roading I do not recommend one of these. 30 degree gravel hill and the pointless bloody thing just stalled.

I understand a Unimog only has 250 hp. My Ford Escape has 260 hp and it's a small SUV. However, the Unimogs have either 8 or 10 gears including some "crawler" gears that should get you anywhere you have traction. If you were in one that stalled, then I would wonder about the the skill of the driver.
I bumped into one on a ride the other day. Looked set up as a camper. Don't see them often stateside.

That Look tho!
I saw this in Zion National Park. It might be difficult to see the picture but it looks like they shipped it over from France and have been drawing a map of where they visited as they moved from Canada through the United States. I thought it was pretty neat.
