It might be a bit too tilted, but they're supposed to be a little forward, not level.

I still need to take a photo of my commuter with the rack and bag on. Also want to get wider tyres but the ones I put on there will probably last a good while.

Last year. Currently in the middle of a dropbar conversion; should be done this week.
>>
>>948345
>Currently in the middle of a dropbar conversion
For what purpose? It doesn't seem like aero is a huge concern for you and those look like fairly comfy bars and you have them quite high, if that's the height that's comfortable for you then you're either going to have the drop bars even higher or rarely use the drop portion.
>>
>>948401
I'm not who you replied too, but I'm also converting to drop bars.
Partially aero, partially aesthetics, partially to work on my bike a little.

Why put a mtb drivetrain in a city bike? Wouldnt you waste half the gears?
>>
>>948446
Because my definition of city is more rural than yours. The "city" of the area is 5km in diameter.

What do you mean waste? the only gears I only use rarely are the hardest 2.

They basically ARE shallow drop-bars.

They give a more ergonomic set of hand positions than racing drops do these days, partially due to all the stem slamming.

I originally bought it to mount a bottle between aerobar extensions on a different bike. It worked great for that.

It holds bottles decently while on the seat-tube mounts, but not very well on the downtube.

Raleigh Super Course with a little wear and tear appropriate for a 1960s-1970s bicycle.

Semislick tires 32-40mm width
Rack mounts on the bike
Flat bars are generally preferable because of the higher riding position, which increases your field of vision and makes you more visible to car drivers, but drop bars are fine too if you prefer them
Here are some models to consider (not all of them have rack mounts, so check on that before you buy if you think you might want racks/panniers; also, test-ride at a local bike shop if possible)
Marin Muirwoods 29er
Kona Dew Plus
Trek FX
Specialized Sirrus
Cannondale Bad Boy
Salsa Vaya
Surly Straggler
All-City Macho Man
Kona Jake
>>
>>949010
Also, if you want to get something cheap, you can buy used. Either an old ten speed road bike (good option if you're in reasonably good shape, like going fast, and will be 100% on pavement) or a 90s rigid mountain bike (you'll have to replace the tires with semislicks). If you want to buy used, I suggest asking >>>/n/bbg for advice.

You could try replacing those heavy as fuck Hookworms, I highly suggest Geax Booze Lights which would save you about 1300g. By the way your bar ends are on backwards and at a ridiculous angle. Also judging by that spacer stack and stem length the frame is too small for you.
>>
>>951962
I can see the merit in having them on backwards.

Having a bike like this was the reason I haven't ridden a bike in the past 10 years - just got a new one a week ago, happy now
>>
>>951973
They'd be more comfortable the correct way, so it curves with your hand instead of against it and digging into your palm.

>>951989
Most of them are probably more expensive than the Booze Lights, one of the reasons I mentioned them. Tattoos are okay but not as good as Boozes and a bit heavier for around the same price.
>>
>>952026
>They'd be more comfortable...
Not necessarily. Having the barends backwards allows you to ride with your palms resting on the curve. With the right way around the ends of the barends would be digging into your palms.
>>
>>951956

>>
>>952026
over in europe they are all around £15-25 per tyre.
wired tattoos are around 600g each, also this time last year i'd wholeheartedly be with you on the booze's as planet X had them for £5 each, as i bought my tattoos for £4, also tattoos are a little rigid and not all that compliant, but then again that could be because they are the wired version not the folding light ones.

I was being serious when I said that the weight doesn't bother me, I'm fat as hell anyway. I should mention that those fenders are steel, too.

But, I'm always open to easy upgrades like tires. In what respects are the other tires better, aside from weight? The hookworms will wear out... eventually. I've liked the Hookworms because they're almost indestructible and last a long time. They also grip wet pavement better than any other tire I've used, somehow.

Bar ends are backwards? I'm not sure how clear it is in the photo, but the bends in the bar ends have the tips pointing forward and inward. That's the only way I've ever seen bar ends set up, aside from being less vertical. Angling them more forward just isn't as comfortable, this thing is mostly ridden in a cruising stance/pace. I actually have foam scooter grips on the bar ends now too.

Indeed, the frame is a bit small. This is my commuter; had I not been in dire need after breaking the previous bike, I'd have taken more time to get it fitted properly. Maybe I'll swap it for an XL someday, or switch to one of the 29er touring frames. That said, though not ideal it is quite comfortable in its current configuration.

>>952021
I don't know what it is about that damn saddle, but it fits my ass like a glove, and I can sit on it for hours. I should take measurements on it or something, they're hard as fuck to find and build quality isn't great. (Performance Bike house brand)

>>952075
Yes, they're Walds. I've seen other bikes with different folding baskets (usually with bits of expanded mesh incorporated), but I don't know who makes them.

Not sure if I should post this in Workhorses or Troll Bike Thread.
Note the Magura brakes with sawn-off brake levers nigger-rigged to a piece of aluminium which is zip-tied to the stem.
It has a Sram X7/Apex/ Deore XT/LX/ Magura HS11 outfit.
The brake lines are zip-tied to the frame, whose grommets are unused.
When I got it, it had a hub dynamo for the front, with a battery powered tail light.
The tires are Schwalbe Energizer, which are specifically made for E-Bikes.

Got it at a local bicycle flea market.
>>
>>952283
You got a better photo of that brake setup, the part attached to the stem? From what I can see it looks like the cable from the brifters is actuating the Magura levers through the aluminium block, pretty neat setup.

There's a similar product for using hydraulic discs with cable levers, did that give you the idea of did you come up with it yourself?

Yep. Magura also sells adapters for this, but the previous owner probably didn't want to shell out the $160 it costs.

I would never have processed what you were talking about, and even still, it was many minutes of intense study before I understood what I was looking at (well, sort-of understood.)

so, do all the brake and drivetrain rigs need constant maintenance or how does this thing ride? was all that work prev owner did to get it all running actually worth it?

It seems OK otherwise, but I've never heard of Eastway.

They're Wiggles own brand. The st1 was one of their first bikes, made of reynolds 520. They were selling them with full apex or tiagra at something crazy like £380 for a spell and I wish I'd picked one up back then. It could be a really nice audax bike if you got rid of all that ridiculous shit on it.

Rap game Gary Fisher

Just finished a long ride on roads and unpaved trails. Did a couple mountain bike trails at the park for shits and giggles, I just had to go really slow and walk it over the biggest roots .
>>
>>952359
>so, do all the brake and drivetrain rigs need constant maintenance
I don't know about maintenance yet, haven't owned it for long. Pretty sure I'll have to bleed/refill/adjust the hydraulic brakes normally, but the mechanical part, I'm not sure what there even is to maintain, It's a cable and a screw.

>how does this thing ride? was all that work prev owner did to get it all running actually worth it?
Definitely not. I can't see any advantage of the Magura brakes with those brifters over the cantilevers I'm used to. But I did read reviews about the Eastway ST1 that said the brakes were insufficient, so maybe Tektro brakes just suck ass.

>>952363
The ST1 was £999 everywhere I looked, just sayin'. Well, I bought this thing for €300.
>>
>>952391
Those are the longest barends I've ever seen

>>952469
As a Magura rim brake user (trials bike) I can say they can be pretty damn good. They can have issues with feeling spongy due to frame and fork flex as they're so powerful, look into getting a booster for them. Also get some different pad compounds to try out, there's shit loads to choose from and plenty of reviews from trials riders.

A sort-of-tip for bleeding, you can use water if you really want. As long as you don't mind removing the brakes (could be a bit of a pain with that cable adapter) you can dunk the whole thing under water and fill and bleed it quite quickly and easily. One downside is you can't leave the bike in sub zero temps.
>>
>>952474
I believe Maguras can be good, but Maguras that are actuated by mechanical brifters definitely aren't that great. The transformation isn't right. I have to pull the brake levers almost all the way to the handlebar until the brake pads connect to the rim, and there's no way to adjust that properly.
>>
>>952476
Yeah the cable pull ratio probably isn't ideal. You could try moving the pads closer to the rim if you wheels are decently true, easiest way to do that is to loosen the clamps until you can push the brake cylinder inwards and use something like a credit card between the pad and rim. If you didn't already know you can also turn that adjuster on the lever, underneath the lever blade.
>>
>>948621
Yo, if you're still around, then can you tell me which handlebar that is?

I found that the only place I actually need a full sus is in or near cities and on bike paths. The infrastructure for bicycles in certain countries in yurop may seem nice at a first look. But in reality the asphalt is going to be torn up due to fixing leaks or the underground cable/sewage infrastructure. Then they are just going to slab on a pile of asphalt creating speed bumps everywhere. And if you live in a country where the soil freezes the asphalt on bike paths are going to turn into uneven pure garbage. Add in roots breaking up the asphalt and then you are going to wish you had a full sus.

>>953759
what's that thing on the downtube and what's its purpose?
>>

I think the thing on the downtube is to stop the rack hitting it if the bars spin round.

As for the holes on the forks, I think they may be something to do with mounting panniers.

Purple Surly:
Bars: Salsa Woodchipper
Breaklevers: Tektro RL 520
Barend shifters: Shimano Dura Ace
Rack: Tubus logo evo
Ral: No idea, Surly called it "eggplant" I think.
Bolts on Fork: Salsa anything cages or similar. They work with regular bottle cages too.

This is my to and from work maker. Also what I ride to go to store or what not. Pretty much what I use to do anything that isn't training.

She's taken some beatings and still rides true. I got into an accident and the downtube got bent ever so slightly. I heated the metal and pulled out the dent but I know it's a weak spot now. It doesn't make me too nervous to ride it but I know if I get into another accident or hit a pothole wrong it's fucked. I've got a couple back up bikes tho. I just love this ride so much.

What fenders are you guys using? Are Honjos worth a full benjamin?
>>
>>953851
Aluminum fenders are not good for abused commuters. Stainless steel fenders are fine, but will get dented and are heavier, and you will get upset once they no longer look good. Either one carries a risk of folding in on itself and causing you to endo. The primary use for aluminum fenders are light weight protection on rando bikes that need some rain protection, but will be babied when stored.

Plastic fenders are by far the most practical, most durable, safest and cheapest. The biggest problem is their one-size fits all adjustable hardware. It's advisable to do a more permanent fix like super gluing the stays when they're adjusted if you don't want them getting knocked out of alignment, and cutting off excess stay.

Had the bike up while I trued the rear wheel and adjusted the headset. Also I found this "Ass Saver" on a bike I found in the garbage. I thought it was kind of comical, and a little nifty, so I re-purposed it for my bike. Doubt it will do very much, but hey, it's better than a poke in the eye.

Pretty great. Grills are usually all over me. Tall dudes have all the luck in the world.

Sucks finding bikes that fit tho. Especially older bikes. I've found all of two frames over the last few years. Buying off the rack is play. 64cm usually works. Smaller frames work with a good amount of seat post and a longer stem tho too. Not ideal.

Not yet, my head is generally on a swivel looking out for the po po, but generally they aren't very common on my commute routes. I've passed a few doing around 50 kph, but most of the time I will do a quick tap on the brakes that bring me down to 20-30 kph instantly. I have a potentiometer as well so I can dial the power down to a legal 500w instantly.
>>

Jelly?
>>954933
Tubus makes better racks.
It's nice that it acts as a stand with the front wheel off. It has three pannier positions. It's easily weldable if you want to do that. Mounting it is a little ridiculous.
I do believe it has the highest weight limit though. I've carried small children on the front.
I got it because it's a tank and it matched the surly backrack.

I wished Tubus came up with something comparable, but it's probably too much of a niche market, especially here in Germany, where there's not much in between real, heavy cargo bikes and classic touring setups with lowriders in the front.

I have backpack panniers. I put my valuables in one pannier and wear it as a backpack. I leave less valuable stuff (clothes and clif bars) in my other pannier which I lock to my rack with a Dakine ski cable lock (extremely small and light)

When I use my other smaller panniers and mostly just have my bike tools and small stuff with, I have a collapsible backpack which I take with when I leave my bike, and leave the spare tubes and rain jacket or whatever in my panniers, have everything else in the collapsible pack

Yeah it's a 50/34 double, which looks gigantic on this bike for some reason. The rings are off a Sora FC-3550 crankset, and the cranks are first-gen XTR (both derailleurs as well). I've been debating the merits of throwing a granny ring on, but it's so flat around here, and 34/28 is pretty low already.
