Would there be any useful reasons for someone who bikes around town a lot but isn't touring or /fit/ focused to get a duotrap sensor?
You might find it useful to have a cadence sensor (to train yourself to pedal higher cadences) and a basic cycle computer that displays speed and distance, but there's no real advantage to using Trek's Duotrap stuff over any other kind of cycle computer.

Hmm, I probably do have really shitty cadence control. Far too long spent with terrible heavy rattletrap secondhand bikes with 6 speeds at most

If only I had a picture of Shadow the Hedgehog on a bicycle.

Had to google that to find out it's a specific make (Bontrager).
There's no reason whatsoever that, as a recreational rider, you can't have a cadence readout on your handlebars, because there's no reason whatsoever that as a recreational rider, you can't do specific types of training to improve your skills and fitness as a cyclist. 'Just riding your bike' only takes you so far, and to be frank about it that seems to be OK with much of /n/ because they really don't seem to care very much. But if you do, then go for it. One type of specific training you can do on any ride at all, if you have a cadence readout, is to switch to a lower gear while maintaining the same road speed, but increasing your cadence by 5-10rpm, and maintaining that for 5 minutes (or more, as you improve) at a time, repeating several times during the ride. Over time your pedaling efficiency will improve, which translates to a performance increase. Another type of training you can do, is for 10 to 30 minutes (or more) at a time, pedal at 70-80rpm at Tempo ('comfortably hard') intensity, repeating up to a few times per ride, with 5 minutes of easy spinning between; over time this will dramatically improve your overall aerobic endurance, and your muscular endurance as well (better endurance at higher intensities).
If you're worried about cost, get a cycle computer with wired sensors. If you want wireless and money isn't an issue, get Ant+ sensors and cycle computer. Stay away from wireless that isn't Ant+.
