Are there any affordable cities in the us with good public transportation? All I have heard is Salt Lake City.

I'm renting a 3 BR in "bella vista" for $1,000/mo. One of the safest neighborhoods in the city. It's a rare deal but the house is fucked up
I also split a $500 1BR with my wife back in 2012. It was another rare deal but only a block from the subway in a safe neighborhood.
Back then I saved up money and just quit my job because it was so cheap. I spent $20k that year. Rent and food was $12,000. The rest was two trips to Brazil

But the city is pretty cheap by most people's standards. Me living on $12,000 was partially because I biked everywhere and cooked all my own food. A monthly public trans pass is $90 alone

Chicago is pretty cheap.
Minneapolis/St. Paul is fairly affordable. Fun place to live, if you can deal with snow on the ground from November to March.
Great bus system. Light rail from the airport to downtown Minneapolis, and downtown Minneapolis to downtown St. Paul. More light rail lines in the planning stages. Super bike friendly.
