>>914415
What's that supposed to mean?

I've wondered why it seems like a board that likes bikes so much also seems so against even talking about bike racing. Without bike racing there really wouldn't be much in the way of bikes at all, all there would likely be is something your grandmother would ride (like oddly enough the adult tricycles I just had to select for the captcha)

Sadly, it's just one very vocal samefag who has appointed herself as queen and master of /n/ and shitposts relentlessly to ward off cyclists, often false flagging as one herself.

Source: Oldfag who rarely posts but still monitors the board out of habit.
This board is truly dead now, but an alternative might come soon if Josh can get his shit together.

I guess I'm abandoning this thread then. I've been sick for a month and haven't been able to ride let alone do any training and I thought at least talking about it might be nice until I get back on my feet, but this is just dragging me down now.

All bike related threads have traditionally gone on n. Therefore, people looking for bike threads come to n. Why would we change it simply to appease you and your trains, Sheldon?

No they don't even come to 4chins in the first place. You stumbled upon a board with a misplaced bicycling scene where you can talk all the shit you want within the confines of a low traffic board. Racing isn't transportation it's recreation. Unless its about riding your 26 inch full rigid with slicks and bags to work you should be posting to the correct board and allow appropriate discourse to continue.

well m8s, I'm back on the horse

took a break after mtb and cx, looking forward to my first road season

Just got my first power meter and did my first power test yesterday. I'm analyzing the data tomorrow. I know I'm not in top shape (I'm also from sea level and tested at elevation) but I'm cautiously optimistic.

What are your goals /brt/? I'm planning on doing well in collegiate road and hopefully make a good showing at the Tour of the Gila.

well, he is technically right. There are only 7 true SI units that can define all other units: meter, kg, second, ampere, kelvin, mole, and candela. The true SI notation for power would be kg*m2*s^-3. Force is mass time acceleration and would defined as a kg(m/s2) which is one newton. Energy is is force over a distance so N*m also known as a joule. power is energy divided by time so it would be joules per second, (N*m)/s. A newton meter is a joule, and a joule per second is a watt. A watt is an SI derived unit, and commonly accepted as the unit for power since the definitions are interchangeable.

Anyone have any tips for what I should focus on for build?

I have pretty good short term power and shitty FTP
10.3 w/kg 1 min
5.6 w/kg 5 minute
4.3 w/kg FTP

I've never done short term intervals so I was surprised when I did 580w for 1 min at 124lbs

It seems like a super useless power to weight profile, way too small watts for crits, no long term power for long climbs, only thing I can think of where this is good is on short punchy climbs.

wat do?

>>
>>915241
4x20 of what
FTP or SS?

4x20 FTP intervals is a fuck ton of work

sometimes people graduate to 3x20 @FTP but that is pretty brutal
>>
>>915343
Sorry, I forgot to specify. I do them at LT, sometimes with a jump every 5 minutes.
>>
>>915364
How close are you LT intervals to you VO2Max ones? I think I go too hard when doing them because 2x20s are pretty horrid...I do them to power but maybe I need to go down a bit there for more volume? My VO2MaxHR averages usually around 192 when I'm fit (I haven't ridden a lot since sept and did some yesterday and averaged 200bpm), my LT stuff is around 185-186 bpm when I'm fit...spposedly they should be more like 175bpm which is a lot easier...
>>
>>915366
I always use power for them, not HR. LT is 91%-105% of FTP and VO2 is 106%-120% of FTP. Big difference for 20 minutes!
>>
>>915092
I can assure you, I have read it many times. When I detect any but the basest of errors, I refer to the SI Brochure to ensure that I identify the problem precisely.

>>915127

>>
>>915970
P. sure (at least for garmins) if you manually pause strava will paint a straight line between the stop and start points and fill in the time.
>>
>>915969
Yes those and mainly adding manual rides.
I considered a speed jersey a while ago but couldnt come up with a way that wouldnt revolve around shifting through piles of information to compare who had the highest average speed in relation to distance ridden or who had say for instant only uploaded one ride that he clocked 100km/h on.

Really theres nothing wrong with avg just rather i couldnt come up with a easy way to compare it competitively

i get to 204 hr during races max. regularly hit 196 as max in training tho if i remember right..

less fatigue = higher hr

more fatigue = lower hr

also more excited/pumped (like during a big effort in race) = highherr hr.
>>
Max HR decreases with fitness too

When I'm out of shape I can hit over 200 bpm

During the season I max out around 191-192

180s bpm when I'm out of form feels like 170s when on form.

It has to do with the amount of blood volume you have. More blood volume=lower heart rates. Froome must have a shit load of blood.
>>
>>916593
I know that, but that doesn't have anything to do with your max. If I were fatigued, my HR would decrease either way, no matter what my max is. Having a high max =/= not fatiguing. I could be putting in the same effort as you at 204 bpm when I'm at 188, etc.
>>916601
I've heard that Froome had some sort of disease that made him generate a lot of blood or something like that (good thing he grew up in Africa, eh) so now he has insane HR

Cat 3 road race on Saturday was brutal, half of the field dropped out due to high winds and low temps. I got into a break with a few others and came in second on the uphill finish. Winner is our current state RR champion, so I don't really mind being second to that dude.

Sunday was a short crit and dang I was rusty. Didn't really work hard, just wasn't in the right tactical mindset to position myself well at the end. Ended up 9th, but I think I shook off the cobwebs at least.

It means RR state champ for Cat 3. He won one road race that happened to have a jersey and title attached to it. I can't know if he is sandbagging without seeing how many points he has accumulated, but that "award" alone doesn't automagically make him a sandbagger.
>>
>>917931
Correct.

However, he's already got a fair amount of points and has said he doesn't plan to upgrade anytime soon, and no one can make him because this is his last year as a junior. He's talented as heck and probably just doesn't want to go from being a big fish in a small pond to the opposite.

How long do you have to train for to not make a twat out of yourself in a road race?
>>
>>915112
Post strava link to power test :^) ill give u kudos

Goals at to race as much as possible, and not burn out on the quest to become a cat 2. Also want to buy a TT bike, since my teammate decided at the last minute not to sell his. I have more vacation time this year so I want to do a few "bigger" races out of my state. Looking at the Georgia Grand Prix, Gila, and the Tour of the Southern Highlands. Possibly more. Will definitely be racing 2 of the USA Crits series event in Florida, since they're right in my home town.
>>
>>918011
In USA non hill regions just a couple months serious training if you have been reletively fit for at least a few years. I'd say 5 months 'training' from a low lvl fitness to hold your own in a cat 5. 18 months training and you should be able to win a cat 4 if you are a good racer.

Anything over cat 3 you can't really tell because it's as much a matter of skill as fitness. There is a lot of cat 3s who are the same fitness as cat 4s though. Just tactics etc
>>

>>
>tfw you just start riding again after your rest period and then you immediately get sick
>>
>>918282
It would take a while to explain fully, but the main reason is that most races you'll do at the start will be 3/4, and cat 3 has a massive spread of ability, ranging from guys who could be 1's/elites/are ex elites but are only 3's because they don't race more than once or twice a year in local events, to total beginners who just lucked in to points by winning cat 4 circuit races against fat sportivists. Also Cat 3 has lots of young riders on their way up, who will also often be riding at a very high standard, and may very well have been national / international level juniors.

But if you train your arse of 20h a week, and get lean as fuck, and i mean lean as fuck, none of this "muh health" "muh metabolism" "muh big boned", then after one year you should smash it.
>>
>>918304

>>
>>918313
Racing is incredibly unprogressive in many ways
>>
>>918313
BC is dumb and literally only cares about its handful of chosen olympic "golden riders" at any time, and using sportives and races to fund them.
>>
>>918315
>>918329
Does that mean it's impossible to progress to cat 2 or what?
>>
>>918331
Only smart, strong riders who do lots of races progress to cat 2 in my experience.

Either that or those who just get really lucky, which does happen.

So if you want to get there, you'd better start training up, gaining up, and leaning out.
>>
>>918332
Do you have to be Froome-tier skelly to progress?
>>
>>918337
you need to be lean, around 10% b/f, ideally less. I would say someone like Cancellara or Boonen has the ideal body for UK racing (note, they are much bigger than Froome, Contador et al, but still very lean).

Don't get so hung up on it that you lose power, but it's important to remember that cycling is all about efficiency, and less b/f = huge efficiency gains.

How you actually look is immaterial (Contador for example looks like Fabu would smash him in a TT, but the 2009 tour says otherwise)

Also get very aero, stretch a lot, do plenty of core work. So many strong riders just haemorrhage speed by having shitty, non aero positions. The "pick a fast position and adapt" mentality springs to mind here.
>>
>>918339
Is racing fun though, or does it become just MUH TIMES MUH GAINS?
>>
>>918355
I'll tell you my story and let you make your own decisions -

I started cycling for fun, now I've become near neurotic about it. I get my fun from having agonisingly painful training sessions. It's nowhere near as easy as just bimbling around the lanes having a chat, especially if I'm slogging out base miles in shit winter weather.

BUT

Now I have discovered that there is no finer feeling than seeing it all come together, getting it right, blowing up the field and winning a race. It really makes it all worth it, and for this alone, I love cycling, she is the one for me.
>>
>>918357
I'm new to cycling and nowhere near being able to do it competitively, but was just wondering if it would be something fun. The atmosphere and all that looks great. I'm not a competitive person at all but I can see how it'd be good testing yourself really.

Do you think it's something every cyclist should at least try? Or can it ruin cycling and just turn it into what you say, an autistic number crunching strategic thing?
>>
>>918358
I'm a very competitive person, and I really love the feeling of smashing everyone, making them suffer, and being the best, that's why I like it.

Racing isn't for everyone, and I would advise against doing it unless you really want to. A race is a fierce place and you've really got to want to be there. if you're just a chill non competitive person then I would recommend audax, or some kind of offroad riding, and there's certainly no shame in not being a racer, or even never being a racer, contrary to what some say.
>>
>>918361
Fair enough then! I'm planning to get into sportives, one near me in May that I'll do, they seem fun.
>>
I'm a fat shit (6'3" 285ibs) and I wanna lose weight. I dream of racing someday bit its gonna be a long, tough road. Anybody got some advice on training for a newb?

>>
>>918362
Sportives are full of wannabe racer middle aged men who are too slow to race, and get btfo by actual racers, shattering their fragile egos, so they try and race sportives.

riding standards are getting lower and lower in sportives for this reason, so I would be very careful. This is why, if you're into road riding but not racing, I would recommend audax. Far better community, far safer, and some really cool events out there (like paris - brest - paris) that actually present a challenge of sorts, not like these "epic" 100 mile sportives people are whoring out for money.
>>
>>918368
Wew there's a 100km one near me on the 20th of Feb.

Not ready for that desu lel, further I've done is 52km.

Does it matter if sportives are full of slow people? Are they not fun?
>>
>>918367
Obviously. Should I be focusing on anything in particular as far as training? I'd like to try an event 60 miles or longer by the end of summer.
>>
>>918370
It's not the slow people, there's nothing wrong with being slow, it's the wannabe fast people who have convinced themselves a sportive is a race, and they ride dangerously.
>>
>>918373
Ah right, they sound like twats.
>>
>>918370
He's exaggerating m8. He has such a fragile hipster ego he gets triggered whenever he sees anyone trying hard, because to a hipster if you can't be at the top, you shouldn't try at all. This is why hipsters gravitate towards smaller niche disciplines or try to separate themselves from the norm not by trying hard and losing, but instead by seeking activities the hipster considers more hardcore, but objectively difficult to make a direct comparison in difficulty.

Honestly, this hipster underachievement attitude is killing cycling.
>>
>>918375
They are, and really they've started ruining what would have been fun, inclusive events otherwise.

>>918378
m8 treating an open road sportive like a race, nearly hitting cars, crashing in to novice riders or causing them to crash, swearing at traffic or other riders for no reason, this is nothing to do with ego, it's just people being plain dangerous.

7/10 you got a half hearted response
>>
>>918375
Almost no one thinks a sportive is a race where you have to win. To a lot of people, it's an event where you put in your best effort and try to do your best.
>>
>>918379
Nice exaggerations. You really convinced me since I'm a naive rider who has never ridden in any sort of organized ride before. Let me worship you and take your platitudes as gospel.
>>
>>918380
>Almost no one thinks a sportive is a race where you have to win.

If only that were true, there are people who genuinely believe sportives are races. And I've seen first hand the damage they can cause through their reckless behaviour.

The attitude you purport, one of stiving for best personal effort, isn't one I think anyone should look down on, and I don't like the elitist amateur racers who somehow think they're above recreational riders.

>>918385
I don't know where you've been riding m8 but all the sportives I've done have had far too many morons riding them like races for me to be comfortable.
>>
>>918388
Sure thing, m80. You are 100% right. There's no way you just aren't a hipster shit who got btfo by middle aged men in a sportive, shattering your fragile ego, so you try do audax where you get a gold star sticker for just finishing. some careful tailoring of that response would have actually elicited a serious response from me, just tighten it up next time and you might be trolling with the best of them one day
>>
>>918362
Here's the thing about audax. There is an actual difference and audax is more laid back.

You pick the event based on your desired challenge level, rather than using a standard length event to do your best and complete as fast as you can, because audax is based on completion. That means the strongest riders are trying to do it at a comfortable pace, and the people trying their hardest are at the back. Lengths vary from sportive lengths, and instead of going faster like you would with a sportive, they get longer.

By no means should you avoid sportives just because some guy is trying to justify his anti-try-hard attitude and being mad at MAMILs. Note that a lot of hipstershits are attracted to audax, because it lets them ride steel rando bikes and wool clothes at a challenge level they don't feel threatened by. A hipster will find himself at home with other hipsters in audax. Sportives are still far safer and kinder than an actual race, but there's a higher proportion of lycra. They're nowhere as bad as the guy pretends they are. He just doesn't like that people try to go fast and he is surrounded by lycra.
>>
>>918394
>blatant insults - "hipster shit" "shattering your fragile ego"
>Sportives are full of wannabe racer middle aged men who are too slow to race, and get btfo by actual racers, shattering their fragile egos, so they try and race sportives.
That's actually from you, you self-oblivious m80.

>If we say that the standard meter in Paris is one meter long it isn't the same sense of "one meter" as when we say this cloth is "one meter long." The standard meter sets the standard. What would it mean to say that it is inaccurately measured? It is what sets the standard of perfection. On the other hand, we can say that the cloth was inaccurately measured.

I'm 18 fagget, My uncles are both physically fit and have MHRs of around 195

Also my rhr was 32 when I was fittest, my mum has a rhr of 55 and she isn't fit in the slightest, literally just genetics. Also when I was 13 my MHR was 204 as well, 5 years w/o decline.

Weird you're an outlier in both then.

Last year when I was 19 in one of my Kin classes I did a max HR test and reached 179, with a resting HR around 55-60. I guess genes plays a large role.
