Lots of people have tried to make lots of finished goods from bamboo in the past, but they always ran into one problem (processing cost) due to the fact that you cant ever get huge thick straight pieces of bamboo (because it is a grass and not a tree),,,, like you can with maple.

The *strength* of it would work for a lot of stuff, if all you could use was bamboo.

I don't think too much of these--but it's not for the reason that you prolly think (I am a recumbentfag).

When people build these velos, they have this odd attachment to the idea of a "solid" body--and it is unproductive and silly.
Making a composite or wood body is very expensive and time consuming, it is expensive to ship to the buyer, and the ONLY thing it provides is an aerodynamic advantage and some weather shelter,,,,, it offers essentially no crash or theft protection at all.
Plus--when it gets damaged, it is very difficult to repair functionally,,, not to mention cosmetically (in the case of a pretty wood shell).

What would be way better for everyday use would be to take a trike and then add a few steel ribs onto that, that would support a lycra cover stretched over them. So this would be more like a body sock than a shell. It would still offer weather protection and almost as much aerodynamic advantage, but it would cost drastically less and weigh drastically less, plus be much less noisy. It would pack down way smaller so it would be much cheaper to ship to buyers. The steel ribs wouldn't be nearly as likely to suffer damage in normal use, and if the lycra cover got torn it would be way easier to repair, or way cheaper to buy another cover, or even to make your own replacement cover.

For a Battle Mountain streamliner, a hard shell makes sense because aero is critical for that.
For an everyday-use velo, a hard shell is more expensive, more delicate, heavier and offers no significant advantage in use.
