Post suggestions for god-tier cities and your rationale, ill start:

Vienna
>It's got bad ass public transport
>City council own 40% of property for rent control-ish things
>Sweet planning - cycle paths, lesiure and rec/sport facilities everywhurr
>>
>>905804

plus:
pharmacies, supermarkets everywhere
affordable public transport with stops nearly everywhere
excellent drinking water out of the tap
nice parks
relatively decent universities

minus:
fuckton of beggars
fuckton of hobos
and for the /pol/ visitors: lots of liberals and kebab
>>
>>905804
>>905811
As I am currently travelling in Vienna I can tell you that the system is really "bad" and "ass". How comes you cannot get from the airport to the main station directly?
>>
>>905863
the current main station wasn't the mainstation until last year. It used to be the south station before the promotion.
Interestingly though, the west station which used to be the main hub, doesn't connect to the airport either unless you count the airport bus lines.

>City council own 40% of property for rent control-ish things
But muh gold standard
Muh Austrian skewl
>>
>>905888
Aside from the fact in most countries rural areas are dirt poor including the U.S.
>>
>>905868
Are the lines completely independent or is it a mater of them not running a service between the new main station and the airport?
>>
>>905961
Because everything outside of a city is rural
>>
>>905971
Suburbs are also poor, despite all their leeching of city money.
>>
>>905962

dunnoh what's going on with the lines, but the public transport in Vienna is independent from the airport.
I guess the management of the airport didn't want to spend more money after the way too expensive refurbishing of the airport in the last years. Probably thought Wien-Mitte was good enough to get people where they want next in Vienna since on the subway lines there connects directly to the then-mainstation Westbahnhof.
>>

Wherever you live must be fucking poor
>>
>>905955
>sent from a capitalist Apple iPhone while eating food from a capitalist farm cooked with capitalist appliances and utensils
>>
>>905961
Not true. Cities here are for poor people and immigrants.

s-bahn to landstrasse 4 euros. Landstrasse links to just about every other place in the city.

or the trains to wien hauptbahnhof since last sunday
>>
>>905981
Suburbs are where middle/upper class people go. Suburbs on Long Island give more in taxes than the rest of everywhere outside NYC.
>>
I've been living in Prague for the past months.
Had bad expectations, but the public transport is amazing:
>3 metro lines that all cross each other in the middle: easy as fuck to understand
>tram system takes you anywhere, trams usually take 10 minutes or something before the next one
>if that doesnt work, take a bus
>best part: with student discount I had to pay 40 euros for a 3 month card. Shit is cheap as fuck
>stations are clean

However, as a cyclist you're fucked
>>
>>906089
councils can be landlords too, state owned enterprises =/= not "capitalism"
>>
Nice in the winter. The tram is sweet and being extended, bus journies anywhere are €1, the velo bleu bikes are pigs but good fun and the police don't give a shit if you cycle the wrong way up a main road or in front of a tram.

plus:
High density
Lots of Public Transit
Very Efficient at energy consumption

minus:
Urban Decay
Crime
Garbage on the streets
Half the population is composed of lazy snobbish assholes
Relatively high cost of living

The country of the Netherlands in general. And not just because muh bikes.

Good national train system supported by good national bus system supported by good inner city tram systems.

And though I love Amsterdam to bits, The Hague and Rotterdam are so much better in terms of transportation. Those Germans should have bombed more cities desu.

Good old fascism for you!

State owned/run properties IF they are run by benevolent people. That is a fucking pipe dream.

Human beings are corrupt evil bastards who will fuck over someone simply because they can. We are even worse when we make decisions as a group since we can constantly shift the blame to someone else.

This is not inherently a bad thing. The entire reason we became the dominate hominid species is because we were the meanest motherfuckers to walk this planet. But it is also the reason why we can't make socialism, communism, and fascism work long term in the real world.

>State owned/run properties IF they are run by benevolent people. That is a fucking pipe dream.
>Human beings are corrupt evil bastards who will fuck over someone simply because they can.
Yeah because having shit run by corrupt unaccountable profiteers is SO much better than having it run by "corrupt" councils (protip they usually aren't) who are actually accountable for their actions.
>>
>>908694
There's no such thing as an unaccountable profiteer: they are always accountable to those who pay for their services.

Explain how they can extract money from those who choose not to buy from them.
>>
>>908903
In theory your reasoning works but real life shows that state owned properties work (a mixed market ecomomy, pretty much most of Europe)
>>
>>908903
In general the mixed economy is characterised by the private ownership of the means of production, the dominance of markets for economic coordination, with profit-seeking enterprise and the accumulation of capital remaining the fundamental driving force behind economic activity. But unlike a free-market economy, the government would wield indirect macroeconomic influence over the economy through fiscal and monetary policies designed to counteract economic downturns and capitalism's tendency toward financial crises and unemployment, along with playing a role in interventions that promote social welfare.
>>
>>908903
>choose

Right there.
>>
>>908904
I never said that state owned properties don't work. I was challenging the assertion that government-run enterprises are inherently less corrupt and oppressive than private enterprises.

>>908905
That's nice, but it's not entirely germane to the problem that was posed.

>>908911
There is no tendency for a natural monopoly in the supply of housing.
>>
>>906146
4,40 actually. Took the S7 to Rennweg and then the other one back to Hbf.

>>906152
Yes, RJ, ICE and EC started to operate from the airport but those are ÖBB long haul trains to Germany and Switzerland and not Vienna lines... ticket to Hbf. is over 8 Euros accordingly.

>HOOMAN NATUR. QED FGTS.

Let me guess, you've learned everything you know about sociology and political science on the internet?

BTW, fascism directly maintains and strengthens capitalist power structures you dumb fuck. Some of the central components of fascists regimes are corporatism and class collaboration. Socialism =! fascism.

Kuala Lumpur
>good:
-Adequate mode of transportation (at least, where I live and go to wok)
-New LRT and MRT (or "light metro and metro") lines being built and new trains being bought
-Commuter train explansion. Now people that live more than 100km away can come to Kuala Lumpur daily (for work) just by using public transport. Hell I live like 50km away from my workplace and I hardly use my car to go to work anymore (the traffic jams are horrible, though I imagine it's not as horrible as in Jakarta/Manila)

>bad
-The frequency could be better. LRT is alright (about 2 minutes headway), but commuter train took forever to arrive. I'd rather have short train with short headway than long train with long headway)
-Some of the expansion should be done 10 years ago, but the leader that time thought it would be better to invest in expressways than in LRT/MRT line expansion. So now we're paying for it (too many cars on road and a generation of people who would rather drive even though they could go to the same place with public transport)
-Bus service is unreliable. The bus are new but the frequency is horrible. Hell, in some places, the bus service is non existent

>ugly
When they started the whole public trasport project almost 20 years ago, they let private sector to do it. So what we have is a mess (lines are not integrated and the exchange distance is too far). When the companies folded (and the government is forced to take over), it's just too expensive to rectify the problem, so we have to make do with it and carry on
-Taxi service is shit. Most of them don't even use meter and would actually threathen the would be passengers. Now when we have alternative (uber, grabcar, etc), they started crying for "muh competition" and even blocked the road and do mob justice on uber drivers.
-Train is narrow gauge(1000mm), so the fastest a train could go is around 160km/h. Not fast enough for interurban travel
>>

What's with Malaysia's fascination with chink-made stuff?
>>
>>909655
It's cheaper and they're willing to transfer the technology to Malaysia(we could build a monorail, so light metro and commuter train would be a step forward)

Also, if they're good enough for Hong Kong, they're good enough for us.
>>
>>909660
Yeah but meanwhile Indonesia and Thailand are using Japanese-made trains for their metros. Why won't Malaysia do the same?
>>
>>909672
Because they are built using loans from Japan, so they are obliged (more or less) to buy Japanese-made rolling stocks for their MRT (a full-fledged metro vs Malaysian LRT which can be considered as light metro).
>>
This would literally be heaven on earth
>>
>>909954

I made a model of a city like that for art class in high school except it wasn't circular it was hexagonal
>>
>>909957
Damn are you me. I designed hexagonal cities too as a teen. Not for school or anything, just for a book I was planning to write about an utopian communist future that I still have my drafts of. I guess I got to work further on it one day.

Pros
>Bike lanes in downtown and streets just wide enough to zip though semi-safely
>Bike-based buisnesses
>Lots of trails in suburbs mean bikers have their own highway system 1/2 the time. i have a 10 mi elevated path to get to my dealers man. no fuckin cars
>lots of bike shops

Cons
>niggers who hit you in absurd ass fucking ways and run off
>Construction can seriously be a fucking drag
>Doubles as windtunnel workout anytime you remotely fucking near the shore.

No its not, Westchester County, NY has the second highest tax rate in the nation. It is second to a county in California. Long Island is way cheaper than Westchester and Rockland counties.

>>909954
I like the venus project and all, but this is not very realistic. Cities will be modernized and extended around the centers that already exist, with tribute paid to the available space and terrain and the people that live there. That's why every single city on this planet grew differently and works a bit better or worse.
Maybe the circular city thing would be suitable for colonizing other planets in the far future.
>>

>Hong Kong

Boy how sheltered you are
>>
>>909954
This sort of planning looks cool in renderings but ends up being kinda lame in practice. See: the Pruitt-Igoe projects, Brasilia, etc.
>>
Live in Vienna answer all the question
>>905863
You can get now to the mainstation, just take the RJ whatever destination it is just one station.
>>906034
it is just the airport is in an other State(we call it Bundesland) and the subways need a permission from both Bundesländern (Vienna and Lower Austria) to build outsides from Vienna. One Politican from a district wants to expend the Subway towards the airport, but the highest member of the Bundesland doesn't want to share the costs to build that way.
Hell you cant even build a Tramway to the village which is between the Airport and Vienna.(even the Mayors of both Cities want it to build)

>>905811
>minus:
>fuckton of beggars
>fuckton of hobos
>and for the /pol/ visitors: lots of liberals and kebab
that is so true, the most beggars and hobos are just send from the poor countries to beg (just don't give any money that looks like gypsy or serb.)
and >Kebab
yes you can't walk 10 meters without seeing a Kebap stand. Especially in the districts 2,3,4,5,6,10,11,12,15,16,17,20,21 (10-21 only centerways cause the outskirts are mostly for living, shopping is only towards center)

Kyoto, Japan

Pros:
Everybody in the city cycles, including the 90 year old grannies.

The city is just the right size for cycling. 40 minutes max from one side of the city to the other. Also, the whole city is pretty flat.

The mountains around Kyoto are completely undeveloped by law and absolutely beautiful. Many roads in the mountains with few cars and nice gradients (pic related)

Hands down the best city in Japan in terms of quality of life. Much more interesting than Tokyo or Osaka. Much more greenery than either of those cities.

Has the 2nd most university students after Tokyo.

Cons:
Not as many shops and nightlife as bigger Japanese cities. But you're 30 min away from Osaka so I guess it's not a huge deal.

Too many fucking tourists cluttering the place.

Idiot high schoolers riding on the road against traffic, old Japanese ladies braking at the slightest of things.

Not enough bike parking. As a consequence most people just park anywhere they can and tens of thousands of bikes get taken away to the pound every year. You have to pay a small fine and go get your bike back at some shitty place across the city.

If there is a cycling lane, cars will always be parked in it.

Not enough trains or streetcars in the city. But I guess it's a pro at the same time because it's the reason why so many people cycle.

Since the city doesn't have many train lines, there are buses everywhere. The buses are usually on time, but they are pretty slow overall and the last bus is usually around 10PM. Meaning that if you are out partying, you better take the taxi back or cycle.
>>
>>914861
Yeah, Kyoto kinda needs some of those robotic bike parking garages like they have in Tokyo. Brilliant city, though. I want to live there.
>>
>>914912
They do have a couple now. The first ones were installed on the south exit (hachijo-guchi) of Kyoto station. And this year they just finished installing a couple of those underground cylinders in front of Kyoto city hall.

The problem with those is that they are mad expensive to build, and cost tens of thousands of dollars in maintenance fees every year on top of the milions in construction costs. Another big issues is that they can only be used with a monthly subscription. You can't use them if you go somewhere 3 or 4 times a month unless you are paying the monthly fee.

A good solution would perhaps be those larger above ground automated parking towers, since a big part of the costs is digging underground. They are in dire need of them in the city center and some stations with regular flat parking are completely full all the time.

Actually there used to be plenty of streetcar in the city. It's just that it's been uprooted during the car boom era
