fat people will have trouble balancing on it.. post videos of them falling please.

I know a fat guy who ordered one and was super excited about it

then a week later he showed up for work wearing a cast and he never spoke of it again

This is pretty much the safety bicycle to the Segway's dandy horse.

The Wikipedia article is pretty much useless, though. Is this thing some sort of open hardware design that got picked up and made by several manufacturers at once? Is it patented by someone without the ability to enforce?

Pretty hot item right now.

Yeah I've never seen a white person go near these ugly fucking things. One of my coworkers is a middle aged black lady and she told me her son spent his car fund on this. I laughed for a solid 15 minutes
>>
>>905573

it could be patented in the US at some point

but in china it's pretty much a free for all

>>905572

california here and the whites and asians own them also

it's pathetic

mostly blacks still though
>>
>>905586
Probably if they were made of wood and didn't have those retarded blue LEDs like some late-90s idea of "high tech", they'd be more appealing to whites.

But yeah the aesthetics are nigger as fuck. Might as well slap a cognac sponsor label and maybe a FUBU sticker.

Not sure but I work for an airline and just saw a directive today saying they're no longer going to be allowed as carry-on or checked items due to hazards associated with the Lithium Ion batteries they use.
>>
>>905573
>Segway created it
>It cost a lot of money
>Several Chinese companies rip the design off
>Sell for cheap with manufacturing defects to normies who don't know any better
>PROFIT

What is this, 2003?
>>
>>905602
Yeah, this is a general thing with large lithium-ion batteries. It's only a deal breaker for individuals or tiny businesses wishing to ship items. Importers just pay higher shipping costs and suffer longer lead times when they have the batteries sent over.

It could get to the point where the authorities start looking for these items in the mail and confiscating them, but there's an easy fix for that. China could start shipping them without batteries, and ebike shops could start selling batteries for them.

Hovertrax were the original, but they were kickstarting and all the chinese factories got the jumpstart on them. They have a US patent and could pull ITC moves to block import, but that's a whack-a-mole game with no end.

Hovertrax appear a little more laid back and less ostentatious with the LED's, and allegedly have regenerative braking to improve range. Though there have been rumors their quality has also been dropping a bit. Hovertrax is backed by Inventist, who has been doing oddball transportation gear for a while now since their solowheel series, so they aren't a fly-by-night company, but their manufacturing is still in china, so buyer beware.

Of the clones, the consistent problem is quality of battery and quality of charger. IC boards don't vary all that much. IOhawk used to be better about quality but they allegedly sold out to using the same low end components as other makers but still charge the premium price. If one is concerned, most designs are internally the same and easy to work with, so you can always swap out the charger for something else, and replace the Li-ion cells with LG/Sony/Samsung/Panasonic cells.

How fast are they? I saw a news reporter using one and it seemed pretty slow. I live 2 miles outside of town. It's a 30 minute walk or 8-10 minute drive each way. Could I take one in and back? How long would it take?
>>
Too easy to get thrown off of it.
Impractical to manuever in crowded pedestrian situations but too slow for the road.
Any significant improvement in design and build quality over the two wheeled boards we're seeing in pop culture right now and you might as well just get a full Segway.

Amazon just took the vast majority of them offline for US/UK, saying show me the UL certs. UL says they have not approved ANY hoverboards at this time (Hovertrax included?)

The only ones left are Jetson brand and the one by Razor (who licensed/bought the hovertrax US patent)

>The Wikipedia article is pretty much useless, though. Is this thing some sort of open hardware design that got picked up and made by several manufacturers at once? Is it patented by someone without the ability to enforce?
FYI: manufacturing in China is modular: for this thing for example: some company will make the motor drives, another company will make the electronics, another company will make the battery packs, another company will make the plastic bodies.

And there is a lot of smaller manufacturing companies in China, so even for the original inventor--more than one of each company will often be contracted to make the parts.

Those companies often know each other and begin making copies of their own, often without the original inventor's knowledge.

This is the reason that product counterfeiting is so difficult to control in China. When you design something complex and you hire a company to make your [whatever], they usually do not make all of the pieces themselves. They contract a lot of the work out to other companies, who (collectively) end up with all the CAD files and tech data to make their own copies of all the parts.

,,,,,

This is another example: this Sparkfun article describes how LEDs are made--and even with something as tiny as this, all the separate pieces are made at different companies.

http://www.npr.org/sections/money/2015/11/27/457404184/episode-666-the-hoverboard-life

If you don't want to listen to the story or read the transcript:

A bunch of engineers drink regularly and shoot shit in China. One of the times they were drinking they were *probably* talking about the Hovertrax invented by Shane Chen and were talking about how to make it cheaper or without gyros or whatever. One of the engineers hobbled together a prototype post hangover, showed it off to the other engineers and they all went about making it better.

The hoverboard as you think of it (relatively cheap chinese gyroless thing) has no single true inventor. If you had to name an inventor it would be booze

where the fuck did these things even come from? I saw an ad posted on craigslist for them one day, then all of the sudden every nigger in town was riding around on them. They just kind of popped up out of fucking nowhere.

Here to black people are riding them. Havent seen a white guy on it.

>>908597

This. I live in suburban Australia and saw someone with one in the supermarket yesterday. It was the first time i've seen one in real life, and it was being ridden by the first black guy I've seen in about a month. Which is really fucking weird desu
