Looks like a Track Bike that was re-tasked as a street Fixie. It's got a front brake, and maybe that Big Bird thing on the handlebars has a horn.

I do get pissed when someone takes a historically significant road frame, e.g. an old curved stay Hetchins, and files off the derailleur hanger and brake cable guides to make a smooth fixie frame. In the case of this Bianchi, it doesn't look molested; there's nothing to prevent it from being restored to it's original self.

Funny that its a Bianchi.

I use to take walmart Thruster Fixies, debadge them, throw on Bianchi stickers and sell them for double the price. I sold 4 of them to bike snobs who had no fucking clue.

They talked about how lightweight the frame was and how they could "feel" the craftsmanship.

I always told them how i bought it secondhand and the previous owner turned it into a fixie and i restored it the best I could. They talked about how sad it was that the original components weren't there.

I laughed all the way to the bank.
>>
>>903694

What's wrong with it? Not a fan of the big bird but the rest looks fine. The flat bar riding posture is apparently better for riding on the street; I'm going to switch mine over from drop bars.

It looks way too pristine to be a beater but I'd still ride it. Plus it has nav light color coded handlebars.

Disregarding any aesthetic or ideological arguments, it just seems like a bad idea to mount them there on the levers. You can only really shift from the hoods. Yes, if you had DTs, you'd have to shift your hand anyway. But these'd also get in the way of the levers if you were on the hoods.

That being said, I also think those look really ugly. I appreciate jerry-rigged stuff, but those are purpose-built kludges.

I really don't get this.
I keep seeing these surlys with rediculous stacks.
why don't they update their geometry ?
whats the benefit of this tiny headtube.
why no slope ?
>>
>>912854
Longer seat stays are more comfortable and they do have a tall head tube.
People who stack their steerers are just gay and you can't fix that.
>>
>>912856
i get the seatstays , but how do they factor into headtube size ?
when I see a bike like this I allways ask my self why they don't look more like the specialized awol.
If you don't ride you're bike droped why have such a small headtube and horizontal top tube.
>>
>>912859
well first, the cross check is a cross bike, not a touring bike.
Both however have about an inch of extra head tube between the top of the top tube, and the bottom of the headset race. This helps raise the bars.
Surly's touring bikes tend to ship with a +17 stem. This raises the bars.
Reasons against using the AWOL geometry more ubiquitously is that, if the standover height is the same on both bikes, I'd really rather that dimension remain constant along the whole top tube, not just the back half. The AWOL has the top tube about 2" taller at the front end of the bike.
The other reason is that the extra tubing to get a head tube taller will weigh significantly more. Like literally twice as much headtube.

just think about it buddy.
overlay pictures or something.
>>
>>912859
Another reason is the long HT will be stiffer, but in the wrong plane. A short headtube will stress the DT and TT to flex a bit more when on rough terrain.
That's also why you might not want stack to scale with size. Because it's better if taller riders add one or two extra spacers than getting a not-so-well-riding front end.

The stupid chimney type stacks are just that though, and double so with a downpointing stem on top. Tars gonna tard.
>>
>>909544
Does anon even research? They _are_ purpose built for _Cyclocross_. They are a solution for very muddy conditions which ruin expensive Ultegra shifters. They do _not_ get in the way of the levers you fucking fuckity fuck that never has tried them to know. I have them on my cross bike and they do the job well. Next fucking question you I-make-assumptions-but-I-have-no-clue fucker.

thanks for the insight, the flex argument is something i never really considered.
I also dind't think the weight increase was that dramatic
>>
>>912930
Weight is just some made up bullshit anon invented to justify his surlitude.
Like I said, it's either in front end stiffness - as with Brandt of On-One/PlanetX designs - or easthetic preference for horisontal top tubes, or both.

It's the kind of rider weight adjusted front end stiffness Specialized "invented" recently for their carbon road frames (I forget what they called it), but old school.

I think they're specifically meant for cross bikes, where you can't be reaching for bar-end shifters

But that barely makes sense because in a cross race you're gonna need STI to do it right IMHO.

So yeah, there's not much reason for these. If they weren't so ridiculous expensive, or strapped to plastic Tektro brakes, I'd be more interested.

Bar-ends beat em by far. Much less fumbling / awkward hand motions

surly has too much stack; owner was sold wrong size frame. and sloping head tubes definitely don't suck. They've become industry standard for a reason. they cut down how much seat tube you need while at the same time allow you to be more flexible with fit, which saves manufacturers money in having to offer fewer frame sizes.

not to mention that spacers are structurally inferior to having a taller head tube.

Cyclocross riders love them more than STI because they're dirt simple and bulletproof. STI shifters don't work great after taking repeated gritty mudbaths; while downtube/barend shifters keep trucking. Bash your derailleur midrace and it no longer indexes right? Twist a knob and rock it in friction mode.

Retroshift isn't exactly as convenient as STI shifters (have to be on the hoods, can't easily shift from the drops) but it's still way more stable than shifting at the ends of the bars or on the downtube.

Doesn't matter if they look dorktastic - they really work in the cyclocross world, and aren't going away any time soon.

No, a small minority of CX riders do.

Cx riders do STI way more

Also my point is if it's not a real cx race bike, using these is kinda silly and pretentious. It seems like hipsters put them on their commuter, gravel, and touring bikes for dork cred.

I don't hate them, but I'm dead certain bar end is more logical and more reliable/sturdy
>>
>>913862
mirrors to check the weather, i guess…
>>
>>913976
Why wouldn't you put them on a touring bike? They seem to combine the convenience of STI shifters with the dead simple mechanics of bar end shifters pretty well. That's not just a benefit in CX.
>>
>>914020
Because barcons are a meme, and really not that great.
>>
>>914021
What's wrong with them?
>>
>>911967

From the comments on the youtube promo vid:

>It's a unicycle with a training wheel and handle bar.
>>
>>913976
They're exactly the same shifters as bar end. Why would they be less reliable just because they're located in a different place? Less likely to hit the ground in a crash when they're not located on the extremities of the bars.
>>
>>914033
They get damaged easily, the index mechanisms are fragile, they are not that convenient to use, and they get in the way of your knees. The one saving grace is friction mode on the handlebars.
>>
>>914073
They're way less fragile than STI and all the other problems are solved by putting them on the hoods.
>>
>>913913
There's nothing wrong with front racks. There is, however, something very wrong with hipsters.

Something that makes them take all kinds of kit and ideas that by themselves make a whole lot of sense, and then makes it all pointless, useless and silly by randomly mixing concepts without any forethought, insight or concept of context.

Like building a high end track bike, sometimes for quite a lot of money ... to use as a daily beater. That isn't even practical in the slightest, and makes them look like tryhard faggots and failed wannabes.
Like the fat Lampre guy, but slimmer.

And when that all dawns on them, self doubt and angst coming down like a tonne of bricks, they put a pizza rack on to push the _sports_equipment_ they ended up with, by being retards without any concept of or regard for application, into 'ironic' territory.

It's like buying a Zonda for your daily chores and commute, and end up nigger-rigging a trailer to it to fit the groceries.

A hipstersofa in front of a modern track bike is like shoving your hand up grandmas crotch during the holliday get-togethers, and announcing to everyone that you were 'only joking'. "Ironically."

You weren't being 'ironic', you were being a retard. And the moronic coverup makes it even more painful.

There's nothing inherently wrong with that bike. Flip the bars back down and it's 100% normal again.

I've heard those bars referred to as hobo bars or bum bars because they're the result of people "getting" (stealing) bikes that are too small. So they flip the bars around to make the effective grip area much higher.

They just have been a fad for couriers for a while too. In that Kevin Bacon movie, Quick Silver, some of the couriers had bard like that.

Bar cons aren't a meme. They are ultra durable and will probably last your lifetime. STIs probably won't.

The new barcons-on-brake things are somewhere in the middle. Those tektro brakes have a lot of plastic, if they break in a crash you lose an expensive part.

They probably won't ever get crashed that hard, but I'm just talking hypothetically. I think they're kind of cool. My gripe is the cost and finger fumbling but i don't hate them at all. I like bar cons and I'm so used to them I don't want anything else
>>

>They are ultra durable and will probably last your lifetime.
Not the indexing rings, no. As friction shifters, maybe.

> Those tektro brakes have a lot of plastic, if they break in a crash you lose an expensive part.
That's retarded, because the plastic body is not weak, and you could always just move the modified lever blade to a new set of brakes.
>>
>>914856

>As friction shifters, maybe.

"maybe"

>>

Kill it and him with fire, seriously fuck you.

This photo enrages me, jimmies are rustled.
>>
>>914857
>"maybe"
Yes, maybe. The indexing parts of a barcon are much more fragile than a STI, and more likely to get damaged because of how rigid everything is. A STI will flop it's levers if you crash. Sram/Campy have the shift internals deep inside the hood bodies, and the shift levers are protected by the brake lever. For all of them, the shift levers move to two axis, except for the campy thumb lever, which is nested on the inside of the bars.

A barcon on the other hand, is really easy to jam perpendicular to the direction is is supposed to be thrown.

Integrated shifters don't fall to pieces when you crash them. Their relative complexity mostly just means they're more likely to gum up, and are more difficult to clean out.

>"just"
It isn't weak, and the "just" is a constitutional, even if you did brake the plastic brake body, it's easy to replace that part. However, it's unlikely that it will brake in the first place. You could completely mangle the front end of your bike and bend your handlebars and the brake body wouldn't break.

Not the guy you responded to, but barcons are shit, particularly Shimano ones where the fucking return spring gives out every few years and keeps the bike from staying in gear regardless of which mode you're in. They're fucking trihard gear that's been adopted by retrogrouches for fuck knows what reason. Either go with downtubes or get integrated controls.

Bar end shifters were invented and became standard equipment on touring bikes decades before the invention and popularization of the aerobar, they were even used in the pro peloton during the 1960's.
>>
This board is dangerously stupid
Bar end shifters are great, proven to work, and more durable than sti. People who tour the world on drop bar bikes choose bar end every time, because they last

Do not believe the one or two retards butt blasted about their glenvalle or whatever the fuck shitters

It is absolutely ridiculous to be calling bar ends a meme when they are riding with those $250 goof shifters
