has anyone ever made one of these suckers?

I lost my license and where I live there's a lot of steep hills. I'm terrified of riding public transportation because there's too many niggers around here.

give me all your advice on attaching a motor to a regular bicycle.
I'm hoping to put it on a fixie, if that would work.

also post pics of motorized bicycles.

ive made 3, theyre fun as fuck and get great gas mileage. not sure if i would recommend doing it if you arent mechanically inclined. they make poor power without doing some port work. if you get one USE LOCTITE

Hey op, I'm here with actual input
Get yourself an 80cc motor, it rides similar to a motorcycle and if you don't know what you're doing your gonna get into some wrecks. I have one myself aND it's pretty great. Cycling Is good and all,but sometimes you're sick or etc and you just want to go
Awwwsk me your questions
>>
>>891265
Some bullet points on my bike
>has well over 2k miles on it
>learn how to repair it yourself, tons of youtube videos
> you're going to want those wheel cages,in colder months it takes a minute for your engine to heat up,so not all oil will be combusted and you don't want an oil slick on your back
>hardcore cyclists will be ass blasted at you, and will approach you talking about how fit you could be
>you have to obey every single traffic law or you will get pulled over
> for an 80cc motor,if you aren't really heavy you can easily get up to 40-45mph if you get a choke/carb mod
>you will crash the first year you have it,it will hurt and you'll learn from it
>if you come to a sliding stop because you've fucked up,you're gonna blow out your back tire guaranteed
>>
How can I go about converting my Schwinn Discover into a moped?
I'm poor and want this to travel between campuses and the store easier and go longer distances
Have to make it legal for use without license, never got one because family couldn't afford
Not for highway use obviously
Am Floridian
>>
>>891275
Building your own is only for the mechanically inclined. If you're in jacksonville you can go on craigslist and there's a guy who makes and sells them for 300, the bikes are older buy the motors are brand new. They're really popular on cl in florida anyways. I've installed my own engine once and it wasn't that hard, you just need a lot of tools and loctite, chain glue and shit to make it work. I've got nothing but good things to say about these for the average Joe who just wants to learn something new and get to work on time without being tired. Cycling in the heat is really shitty
>>
>>891280
I don't have much mechanical knowledge, but plenty of time and wanted to use this opportunity to start learning
I'm not near Jacksonville though.

http://shop.biketomopedkit.com/product.sc?productId=2
Thoughts on that?
>>
>>891282
Imo you should use gasbike.net
The engine in my picture above is from them, and I've had it for two years with no issue. Start watching install videos on their site, figure out what you're problem areas will be and research them. The only tricky part will be drilling through your handlebars but they show you a nice trick on how to get it right the first time. I've taken my bike onto small highways and the only time I've ever been pulled over was being told to slow down
It has a couple racer mods on it ,so I get up to around 50 if it's flatland. About 130 mpg, factoring in oil cost it's around $2.40 per 130 miles. Save up,buy a nicer engine. I spent 190 on mine.would you rather spend an extra 40 and not have to replace an engine? You'll thank yourself in the long run
>>
>>891282
Curious, what city are you in friend?
>>
1st option: mom.
2nd option: bus pass.
3rd option: new 50cc scooter.
But you've thought of all that and you want to use your pre-existing bike, don't want to pedal (much), and don't have a pile of cash or well-equipped machine shop. Been there.
What you need is a front electric hub motor. It just drops right into the dropouts. You will need to attach the controller, battery, throttle, and wires bettwen them, and might (or not) need to have the wheel rebuilt. Anything else you could do is more complex. Most of the cost is in the battery, but lead-acid is cheap and powerful if you don't need the range.
Downside is you still have to pedal quite a bit (it just helps starting out and on hills) and it's heavy and changes the handling. Maintain your brakes. /n/ has a point when we just suggest a 90's mountain bike with slicks.
>>
>>891265
>>891268
Fucking hell why don't you just get a motorbike?
>>
>>891288

Do you know how big of an motor I'm allowed without a license?
>>
>>891346
49cc is the legal limit, but the cops don't know the difference. Get an 80cc,they seriously couldn't tell the difference if they even wanted to
>>
>>891337
Because you don't need a license for these
>>
>>891354
But they're so god damn slow they're useless
>>
>>891200
you can buy the whole kit on ebay, check it up.
>>
>>891352
They might not be able to tell just driving by, but then they can't tell you are unlicensed either. If (when) they bust you for speeding somewhere a 50cc should not even be able to speed, or for anything else (like sidewalks and pathways), they will totally be able to tell. Even if they need to impound your illegal deathtrap and physically measure the geometric displacement of the piston. Nailing you for operating a motor vehicle while disqualified is a kinda big deal and would be worth that amount of trouble. >>891352

>>
Bought the kit a few years back, ran good. Just make sure you use supreme gas and correct oil mix. Lots of fun and when you see a cop, just start to pedal and kill the engine.
>>
>>891370
If you're not a total jackass cops don't really mind. I've gone from riverside in jacksonville to green cove springs, about 55 miles and not once did anyone stop me. If you're going the speed limit, not endangering people and riding the shoulder then you'll be fine. Obviously if you're going 30 on a sidewalk you're going to catch some shit

AUSfailia illegal.

WHAT TO DO:

Take off the head and grind flat the 3mm ridge which presses down on the aluminium gasket.

You increase compression ratio and have more power.

Use a tabletop belt sander to do it in 30secs or lap (do figure 8) on sheet on flat sanderpaper. Rough to smooth.

Increasing compression ratio is very good mod.

Putting a relatively powerful engine on a bicycle is dumb because it doesn't have suspension and the tires have tiny contact patches. In good weather it might work, usually, but in any other condition it seems impractical. But it seems like you know a lot about engines and you're just bored or whatever, so hey, it is America after all. If I were you I'd almost just go with a longboard and grappling hook.

That being said, practically the whole licensing and enforcement thing is at least equally as stupid and dangerous. You should get one of these, but I guess it's not an option due to laws (which are supposed to be keeping you saf -- I mean, getting cops paid).
>>
>>891411
also you may want to upgrade to disc brakes instead of v-brake (shit).

Disc brake as minimum on front.

It is no fun pulling up to a stop with v-brakes from 60km/hr
>>
>>891376

>I'm terrified of riding public transportation

Even if there were a half dozen of the guys from Silence of the Lambs riding on public transport in your city, it would still probably be safer than riding a 80cc motorized bike with no safety gear. At least the psychos need your skin intact...
>>
If you decide to get a motor by itself then make sure >MAKE SURE< you use a large frame (24" frame and above) so that you have clearance for the cable that goes to the carburretor.
Some of the installs I have done meant i had to drill a hole in the top tube near the seatstay just to have room to allow the throttle cable.
Alternative is to wled up an new but offset intake pipe to the engine.
Increase compression ratio too!
Don't oil the chain but use low-flick-off motorbike chain lube.

I have one of these bad boys, OP. it's a pretty simple motor, very maintainable with some basic knowledge. hard to fuck up.

i agree with what the other anon said about locktite. you will really underestimate how much these fuckers will shake all their hardware loose.

they're also fairly easy to modify for more performance, but i'm assuming that doesn't interest you because you're a woman.

if you get one MAKE SURE YOU TIGHTEN THE HARDWARE OFTEN. it would be embarrassing for something to fall off because you underestimated the loosening power of vibration.
>>
Do these even make sense anymore given the current state of electronic bike technology?

on ebay and amazon you can buy kits or just parts like a frame with the mounts welded on. but your going to need a motorcycle license to ride in the road. pic not related, but it's here anyway.

Pretty sure you can't ride a motorized bicycle on pathways and sidewalks, not around here anyway. Where can you ride if not on the road?
In Alberta (and why live anywhere else?), even 50cc mopeds need license, insurance, and registration. The only advantage is you can operate them by yourself with a learners license at 14yo. The 'powered bicycle' class is only for 500w electrics, no gas engine of any size. I've owned one for many years and I would say 500w is about all the power I would want on a regular bicycle frame anyway!

Those 500w should be 500W. I re-read the SI wikipedia page and stand corrected. Keep fighting the good fight!
But the power; ya. Those middling racers are athletes on closed courses, with every variable tightly controlled, in a sprint. And they don't have an additional 500W from the bike itself. A motorized bicycle is working in the rough and tumble real world where shit happens and you need a lot more margin. We're not talking dernys here. As the power (W), mass (kg), and speed (km/s) come up, suspension, lights, brakes, overall strength, and all that good stuff become less optional. Not just for yourself, but for the road-going public as well.
I had a Kona Dew Al frame with Wilderness 500W front hub for many years. Served my very well in the winter but I thought any more would be too much. Eventually the frame started cracking, fortunately without hurting me. Sure, it could have been a better stronger frame, but then it could have been a better, stronger, more expensive everything. Once you start down that path you just end up at a motorcycle.
>my experience: 500W is lots for a regular bicycle frame.
>>
>>891200
I use one of these in the summer to get around, the heat makes cycling in Louisiana miserable and I'd rather not get to work a sweaty mess. I recently bought a motorcycle as a step up from it, but haging this bike greatly helped me understand the finer nuances of going 45 on a fucking bike.
>cars are always gonna try and pass you, regardless of you going the speed limit
>if you live in a busy area, you'll probably get to work faster on this than in a car. Redlights? Go to bike lane
>"worst case scenario" prep. You always here about motorcyclists who have no other option than laying down the bike. You're prepared early on for that in your first year
>be heading to work, going 40 in a 40 street
>some asshole driving stick cuts me off, stalls out and comes to a sudden stop
>learned that day how to safely lay down the bike

All in all, a very fun method of getting to work if you're not super fit and ready for 10 mile rides. Be ready to get hands on with the maintenance though
