I posted this in the last thread, but it died

What aircraft do you want to fly, but haven't yet?

Me:
>UH-1/Bell 205/212/412
I'd love to get me some time in a Huey, they're so damn neat, and if their pilots' word (and DCS World) is anything to go by they're supremely flyable

>UH-60/S-70
I'm holding out hope I'll get out of the Nasty Girl infantry and into one of these.

>Robinson R66
I've been putting around in an R22 for a while and an R44 is right handy when I feel time to do the transition training, so why not go 3 for 3?

>MD500
Take on Helicopters and Arma make it look awesome, and I have a soft spot for flying eggs

>EC/H-145
Eurocopter/Airbus Helicopter/whatever they call themselves now bills themselves as the luxury car of the helicopter world, I want to see if they're telling the truth

I'd also like to get into fixed-wing flight at some point, but one thing at a time

Unless the National Guard sends me right to WOCS/Ft. Rucker, it's on to instrument training after this

30 hour student here

Just soloed yesterday. It took so long because funding flying is tough. But now I got my shit together, and have set up a large fund of money solely for flying. I'm planning to have my PPL before May of next year.

I flew my Cessna 150 from Orlando Sanford International (KSFB) to Leesburg (KLEE) with a friend who is a student pilot to give him a chance to practice operating in class C and D air space. On the return flight, I took back the flight controls and radio responsibilities, everything was going very smoothly. I was talking to Orlando approach, and we were about 15 miles from KSFB when the first sign of trouble appeared. I have a panel mounted Garmin 296 that is rigged to a cigarette lighter, it started giving me the "external power lost, shutting down in 30 seconds, press any button to cancel shutdown" message. The message would pop up then disappear, suggesting it was getting power intermittently. My thought was the connection to the cigarette lighter isn't good, I'll play with it later. The next thing I know, my radio is silent and the screen is dark, the light on my transponder is off, and my intercom is running off its own independent battery. Now I'm less than ten miles from the airport. I had been told to expect the "lake Monroe arrival", which is normally flown at 1500 feet. I ran through the electrical failure checklist, which is basically cycle the master switch, check your circuit breakers, and turn things on and off, nothing. At this point I pretty much knew it was the master solenoid, and I wasnt going to be able to trouble shoot this in the air. I squawked 76 and made radio calls even though I pretty much knew everything was dead, continuing on the lake Monroe arrival, looking for light gun signals from the tower, hoping they were ready for me. I did a couple 360s to see if they would figure out what happened, but to no avail. To I climbed to 2250 feet (they normally assign departing GA traffic to 2000 and 2500, I chose this altitude to try to stay out of the way) and flew north west, away from where traffic is most dense.

Are there any untowered airports you could have landed in?

I thought I would have to land at KDED since I wasnt able to talk to tower or approach, but I had one last option to try. I called flight service on my cell phone, and the briefer was able to give me the phone number for the tower at Sanford. I called Sanford tower, and told them who I was. They talked me in and I was given runway priority and cleared to land. Obviously the flaps didn't work, so I made a zero flap landing.

Things I learned:
•Use your crew resources. Having someone who could fly the airplane and scan for traffic while I did trouble shooting and messed with the cell phone was invaluable.
•It's not a bad idea to have a hand held radio, things fail.
•When you see a little electrical gremlin pop up, it could be something bigger about to happen.

All in all not too exciting, but a good learning experience. I'm SO glad my airplane is in her own hangar where I can work on her on my terms, not out in Deland. Pic is muh airplane at Oshkosh.
>>
>>889983
Ye, but I didn't wanna get stuck lol
>>
>>889990
If it were me I'd have said "fuck it" and gone into autorotation, but it's the aircraft club's helicopter, not mine, so as long as it's intact at the end who cares what airport it's at, or if it's even at an airport at all?
>>
>>889998
Why? It's not like it was about to fall out of the sky. Might as well get it back home. And in a helicopter I would think you can get away with even more since you won't be in the traffic pattern. If I were in a chopper I would have just gone low, and gone to my hanger, staying away from taxiways, runways, and known approach paths. I don't get the "oh, something failed, better land in a field!" Mentality.
>>
>>889998
Anyone who has to fix the thing cares. Would you rather have to truck your told out to freaking field, out gave the aircraft in its hangar to work on? Think things through, son.
>>
>>890001
*tools
*or have
>>
>>889999
Mainly because I'm still a relatively new pilot without any mechanic chops and I'm not about to risk anything when I'm not sure what's going on. I would have at the very least landed it at the nearest airfield.
>>
>>890005
You should at least know that the engine still runs fine without electrical power
>>
>>890005
Makes a lot more sense than landing off field. You introduce many, many unknown factors when landing out. And just FYI, electrical systems are completely separate from engine systems. I lost my alternator and battery at the same time, and my engine was fine because it uses magnetos, not an alternator. Read your POH cover to cover, there should be plenty of discussion of aircraft systems, it WILL help you make good decisions in flight.
>>
>>890006
True, but the warning lights and comms don't

>>890007
Landing in a field would be my last choice, to be sure.
>>
>>890020
Also, this is one of the biggest reasons I post here, picking the brains of more experienced guys and whatnot. I've gone over emergency procedures with my CFI getting ready for the checkride, but haven't gone too in-depth with the inner workings of the systems.
>>
>>889555
C177s are sexy tbh
>>
>>890027
when I'm old and fragile, I'm looking forward to their easier access cockpits. Less body oragami to get in and out of. Also, them sexy strutless wings.
>>
>>889998
Why the fuck would you enter an auto as a response to an electrical failure?

Sorry if this sounds harsh but as a helicopter CFI this is the kind of shit that would make me never recommend a student for a check ride.

I understand if your CFI hasn't gone over stuff like this with you (which is very much their fault) but I wouldn't even allow a student to solo if they thought taking out engine power was even remotely close to an acceptable solution during an electrical failure.
>>
>>890073
In fairness to him, he probably assumed they'd cover this in ground school (which they didn't)
>>
>>890075
Yeah and I realize that which is why I mentioned it being the CFI's fault.

I know a person can't really be expected to take responsibility for things they didn't know, but as a pilot you really need to take charge and take responsibility for knowing your aircraft. This is why the aircraft has a POH, and this is why that POH has an emergency procedure for this exact emergency.

Like someone else already mentioned, read the POH cover to cover. If you're going to be PIC, that is your responsibility. Shitty CFI or no.
>>
>>890076
Well, it's a good thing someone caught it before I went on a long cross-country. For all I know I had already known this and promptly forgot it when I didn't need to answer the question anymore, so there's a good chance it's just me being the retard. Either way this has probably been a very important internet conversation to have.
>>
>>890081
...In fact, I've just found notes that tell me exactly this, and I'm remembering my CFI telling me to land as soon as practical if there's an electrical failure but not to do an auto. I'm currently in the process of being retarded.
>>
>>890081
It's easy to braindump. Especially during the private rating where everything is new information and it can be a bit overwhelming. But you just gotta study, study, study. Early on in my training a very experienced pilot (former Coast Guard Jayhawk pilot) told me that in aviation you never stop studying. Now that I've been a CFI for a couple years I know that to be very true.

Anyway, I've harped on long enough. Good luck with your training and happy flying.

Flying one of those is a goal of mine, actually; I've been an infantryman in the National Guard for a while, they offered to send me to WOCS/Ft. Rucker to become an Army pilot, then promptly ran out of money, prompting me to say "Fuck it, I'll do it myself"
>>
Is there a small plane under half a million that has an autopilot on par with what an airliner has?
>>
>>890098
I'm going to go ahead and say "no". I don't know how much an autopilot unit actually costs, but considering the cost of a G1000 I'd say you'd be SOL

If you're an aircraft owner or partial owner, yes. They are a great resource of knowledge (and Aircraft insurance) and will fight for you if the feds try to gang up on you. Their magazine is bretty gud too. If you're not an owner, save your money and use it for flying, then if something happens and you do get the FAA in your business, buy a membership at that point in time, enlist their help.
BOTTOM LINE, AOPA is good, but you really only get your monies worth if you're a professional pilot or owner.

Just got back from flying a 1.5hr solo. Thank God for the trimmer, that would have been miserable without it

Also, I've noticed there's a very specific type of hungry that sets in immediately after flying; you desperately need calorie-heavy food and in large quantities, and yet it feels like it could wait another hour. It's an emergency, and yet it's not. Eventually, of course, the levee breaks and you end up downing a Chipotle burrito and all of its chips, a mess of Greek yogurt with granola and peanut butter in it and still have a hankering for McDonalds, but still.

15 knots!

Not trying to sound like a badass or anything, but I had to park a 22 in 37 knot winds about a week ago.

Coming back from my student's first XC, the winds picked up ahead of (and way above) forecast. We flipped over comms to listen to the AWOS and I was just like yeeaaaahhh I'm gonna have to land this.

Man it was so pretty. Line service guy jumped out of the fuel truck shoutin who the fuck landed that!

It ended up grounding the fleet for the rest of the day.
>>
>>891063
Well, it actually might have, but the guys at WXBrief are so lethargic half the time they probably forgot; I'm always crossing my fingers hoping for one that's had his coffee, personally. I got the all clear from one once and found myself at the edge of a thunderstorm
>>
>>891072
I don't rely on the briefers to see what the weather is doing, I look at it myself and use them to have me on file as an official brief and fill in any info I may have missed or misinterpreted. Based on the pressure systems in the area I know it was going to be windy, and the forecast verified as much; just not completely accurate. It happens.

Also, if you're using 1-800-WX-Brief and calling in for all your filing/briefings, try 1800wxbrief.com. Online alternative, ran by the same people, and tons of awesome features. And you don't have to talk to anyone.

I'm assuming that means those breaks aren't something you can just look up the schematics for and machine out

>>
>>891579

>>
>>891585
The part that fails in the brakes is the expander tube. Basically, it's a rubber tube that fills up with hydraulic fluid and expands, pushing a bunch of (ceramic/asbestos?) blocks radially against a chrome lined metal drum.
Brakes get hot, rubber tube starts leaking from heat damage. If ignored, the tube will blow out and you'll loose ALL of your hydraulic fluid. That means no brakes, no flaps, no landing gear, no cowl flaps, no windshield wipers, and no autopilot.
I try to find and purchase new/old stock or surplus tubes and brake blocks, some are as old as 50 years. But all of the spares have already been taken up by me and the other remaining dc-3s.
Bassler Turbo Conversions does make brand new ones, however they don't last as long as the old ones and they are stupid expensive. I think it's like $11,000 to buy 2 complete assemblies for one wheel. That's way more then what I would pay for the surplus ones.

>In other news, an aviation accident occured yesterday in which a small helicopter crashed into the side of a mountain after a catastrophic failure. Air Traffic Control lost contact with the pilot at roughly 3:30 PM, and radar reports show the aircraft rapidly descending. Investigators on the scene found the rotor assembly had ripped completely apart, and some noticed what appeared to be a deer whistle where the nuts that held the rotor to its mast were supposed to be. The pilot has no next of kin aside from his parents, though he did have a rather sweet gaming rig and a very respectable DVD collection.

It involved sunset and flying the plane back to homebase at 90% power.

Also I dreamt of flying last night, I had my own plane, and flew to several coastal airfields, stopping for a coffee, generally pretty nice dream. I want to realize that dream.

I hope to have a pure electric or at least hybrid electric airplane, in the foreseeable future, for shorter hops to airfields, along with solar collectors on my house.
>>
>>892654

I'm going to guess what you did...

Miss something in a pre-flight? Hot-start a turbine? Take a short, crappy base-to-final and go bouncing? Approach too shallow? Didn't bring the oxygen? Near miss? Low rotor RPM? Too fast in an autorotation? Settled with power? Areodynamic stall? Flat spin? Flew an ultralight into controlled airspace without prior permission? Married an air traffic controller?

There's a guy who handles north Orlando approach on 135.3 after 10pm, he's the most friendly guy ever. There's a bitch on 119.4, west side at around 4pm, total cunt, will yell at the aisians and new students. And then there's the guys at. KMCO, ALL total bro-tier controllers, they'll help you if you need it and if you don't, they'll treat you like an adult. The only thing about listening to Orlando chatter is trying to understand all the gooks, chinks, and zipper heads.

When will turboprops/fans become as efficient as diesel engines from 1940?
>>
>>894633
Fuel efficiency while idling notwithstanding I don't think aircraft designers care all that much for diesel engines.
>>
>>894894
But diesel engines have a much higher thermal efficiency.

Or are turbofans their high alt performance just that important?
>>
>>894903
High power-to-weight ratios and light weight mean they're the best type of engine you can put in a huge number of aircraft, especially if you're going long-haul cross country or plan on carrying a ton of cargo. As for piston engines, there are some diesel aircraft engines out there but most of it is avgas-fueled. I think it has something to do with responsiveness and performance in cold environments, though I'm not an engine guy, so I can't be entirely sure.
>>
>>894579
Yeah, I got the same impression when I first saw one.
I think the tall skids make it seem bigger than it really is.

>When will turboprops/fans become as efficient as diesel engines from 1940?
When weight becomes no longer a factor. Aircraft turbines modified for industrial or marine use already do exceed 40% thermal efficiency:

Any recommendations for a new headset?
The cheapo headset that I bought when I started flying just shit itself
Ive been looking at the David Clark H10-13.4
I'm wondering if I should pour more money into it now for the same of future proofing
For my type of flying? I only have a PPL right now but the dream is commercial
>>
>>895236

That is my goal. To one day own a Cardinal; or a 210 for the higher capacity at the expense of sexiness.
>>
>>895257
I'm a David Clark dealer. 13.4s are the standard for aviation, they're good and will last years. If you get any DC, definitely replace the ear pieces with some nice gel ones, the DC dealer should have some. If you want a neater cockpit and fly a metric tonne, consider getting a 10-60C. Don't waste your money on the Pro-X or the ENC Pro-X, they're uncomfortable and overpriced.

If you're buying in person, make sure you examine them at the dealer and make sure they're in the plastic packaging and the headset information card is with the headset, since dealers will sometimes loan out headsets. Also, make sure you get the twin plug, not the 6 pin; you'd be surprised how often people give out headsets that don't work in most airplanes.

The Bose A20s are good, but way too expensive and are /not/ very durable at all. Since you're flying pistons, I recommend against active/electronic noise cancelling. When you transition to jets, Pro-X and A20 become more practical.

tl;dr 13.4 good, Pro-X and A20 a bad
>>
>>895315
Thanks. Unfortunately I don't think there is any DC dealer near me, so ill be buying online.
I think ill get the h10-13.4
Any dc headset you would recommend for jet flying?
>>
>>895412
I've only ever flown a CJ3, and 13.4s are decent in it. I'm not a fan of the Pro-X in any condition because I don't like on-the-ear headsets, they're always uncomfortable to me, but I would say Pro-X would be most relevant to jets.

I know some jet guys love their Bose. Consider that.
>>
>>895504
What are the big differences between the h10-30 and the aforementioned 13.4
The big reason I asked about jets was because I wanted to make sure the 13.4 would last me and I would need another headset for jets

This is true
We had a couple aim guys where I used to work and those guys were total retards

Those fuckers actually forgot to put the main axel wheel nut back on when they swapped wheels on a piper meridian. Luckily, the meridian pilots noticed something was not right when they were taxiing.
Actually, everyone who worked there, including the engineers and the manager that hired the AIM guys were retarded. You wouldn't believe some of the shit that was going on there.
I quit because I figured it was a matter of time before the FAA started pulling everyone's license.

>>

Piper
>>
>>896936
So, in other words, don't enter the Sporty's contest to win a Piper Cub?
>>
>>896940
The older piper aircraft are great. I used to own a cub. But, the stuff they are working on now is questionable.
Here is an example.
Operational testing Piper's new prototype aircraft. The retards building the plane don't care because it's a prototype. Because it's a prototype, the factory builders think they can over/under buck all the rivets and cut corners all over the place.
When the operational testing guys get it, they have to fix all of the mistakes.
Some of the engineers would not specify exactly what to use in a certain situation. And when I would ask them, I would sometimes get answers like "use whatever" or "just pick it up from home depot". No retard, you're the engineer, I need you to tell me exactly what to use, because if it fails, it needs to be your fault, not mine.
>>

>Be in R44 hovering on helipad next to runway
>waiting for clearance
>172 lined up on parallel runway
>timid retarded controller woman gives us both clearance to take off
>I am to continue straight ahead at 500' then down into the river valley
>the 172 is to climb to 1500 then proceed across my path direct to the set heading point east of me
>We both leave at the same time
>Staring at the 172 not 200' off my port side
>Suddenly right wing drops
>Collective through the floor.jpg
>Barely missed getting my tits slapped with a cessna
>Stupid ass little ppl kid with female instructor
>S-soooooorrryyyy
>Get back to airpant, land chopper
>Pissed
>Get stuck in gridlock on the way home from all the cessna pilots with their blacked out sedans and bmws trying to cram through the exit
>They're all dressed like amelia earheart fuckin leather jackets with captains bars white scarves and gaybans

I hate fixed wing aviation kids.

This big ass skids flex and absorb so much of the impact from landing it's almost impossible not to look good landing one. I've also seen Oil field workers open the back engine cowling and stuff their bags up against the turbine figuring it had a baggage compartment just like an ASTAR. So if you ever fly one you have to watch cuz retards will do stuff like that or get burned to fuck crossing under the tail boom.

What is it with people putting shit in engine compartments? My CFI found someone's car keys put into the filter of the R22's engine, once.

Admit it, you secretly want a bomber jacket, too.

If we're going by the textbook definition of "general aviation", the Bell 525 may very well end up being the supreme champion of all things comfy

lol

I prefer flying the R22 in jeans and a t-shirt, but if someone gave me a sweet fucking bomber jacket I'd rock that bitch no problem, especially if it were cold

I don't get the point of being hung up on people's attire in the first place
