As it so happens I just got back from riding pic related, got in two hours after work riding singletrack and gravel in the dark. Was fun, but I have to confess I'm a total wuss when it comes to rock drops and ruts at night.
>>
While out today I passed through the valley where a pumpkin patch is located. On one side there was a giant truck with a sign saying to enter from other side of valley blockading the road because a bridge at the bottom is condemned and barricaded. Sure enough while riding down that road I encountered a woman in an SUV who must have gone into the ditch to get around the truck confident the sign and truck was a ruse. When I was exiting the valley there was a constant stream of cars kicking up a huge plume of dust.

The bandage from yesterday's road rash incident worked its way loose, so I had my tights rubbing on the open wound for the last 20 km.

Less people out riding the gravel roads on the weekends this year. Cyclocross has gained popularity here and the masochists do that every weekend instead.

Rode out to a dark spot to watch the eclipse. Actually didn't look any better than watching from home, but it was a nice ride.

My tail light started fading as I was riding out, so I changed the batteries in the dark. Which means I had to find the batteries in my bag, and the stubby screwdriver in my toolkit.

Very dark tonight, no clouds at all. On my way out I missed the turn off to the road I wanted to go down.

I too went on an eclipse-viewing ride this evening, left the house just before sunset and rode out of town into the mountains to get away from city lights. I reached the top of my climb just as the moon finished falling into the earth's shadow, paused for a few minutes, then looped back down another road (which had turned into a parking lot crowded with the cars of people who had the same idea), taking my time so I reached my door just as the moon was almost completely fully lit again. Can't ask for a better excuse to go on a night road ride.

What a difference a couple culverts and several months make. A road that was impassable this spring because of huge pond was dry today with no standing water at all. Looks like they are draining the wetland for future development several years down the road. I flushed out a small group of deer while riding through there. The road is covered in grass so it doesn't see much traffic.

Another stupid windy day, but at least warm enough I didn't need a jacket. The wind has been changing direction just about every day, so I've been mixing up my gravel routes. Taking a gravel friendly bike gives me a lot more riding options. I put my road bike away a few weeks ago and started using my touring bike with knobbies for most rides. They didn't bother re-grading the roads after the last rain so the roads have been in great shape with several smooth packed clay gravel free channels.
>>
>>883877
Spoke too soon. The graders are out this week churning up the gravel. I can't enjoy the down hill spots with piles of loose gravel all over the road. Nice thing about the few dirt roads I encountered is that they never get any maintenance. I was planning to take a few pictures but forgot my camera. South wind yesterday, north today and tomorrow its east. Strangely few west winds lately.
>>
Weird lunar light on said night and after a couple beers as I was riding downtown to get a burger, clipped a big pothole pretty bad, went down on my hands, face, hip. Nasty cuts, healing
>>
I had a nice 4 hour ride planned for today, but the forecast totally changed overnight. Rain, then misty all morning and much less warm.

I'll take the fat bike for a spin this afternoon instead.

Weather was shit today and will be shit for the next few days, rain and high winds. Going to have to start wearing a jacket on all my rides going forward.

Fun ride home from work tonight. 32 mph gusts and minor flooding on the roadways. Torrential rain coming down from one side and car splashes coming at me from the other. The only other cyclists out are delivery guys.

I was surprised at not seeing any rats since they usually come out when it rains, but just a few miles left to go I caught one. He swerved when he should have gone straight and he got caught by my rear wheel. Didn't feel as crunchy as usual so he might actually have lived, but I kind of doubt it.

Yesterday's rainy day project was to service the rear hub on two bikes. The freehub on one bike was a bit wobbly. After some online research I saw it mentioned that removing the thin internal spacer from a freehub can eliminate the wobble.

So tonight's project was to use fashion a freehub disassembly tool by dremelling and hand filing a socket and trying not to lose any of the 50 tiny bearings inside the freehub. Turns out the XT freehub only had 1 thick spacer instead two. But there was a thick burr making it thicker than it should have been. I'm not sure if that was a manufacturing defect or damage from use, but I filed it down. Wobbling and the noise it produced has been reduced to a more typical amount.

This video shows how to take them apart and links to specs for making the tool. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X9gIEG1db0s

But in general taking the damn things apart is probably more trouble than its worth.

Brutal wind today, 40 gusting to 60 km/h. Going straight into it I could do 13 km/h in the drops and about 11 kph on the hoods. About 2 km before my planned turnaround point the wind switched from straight west to NW, which sort of defeated the point of riding 26 km upwind to reach the start of a straight east 12 km long segment. I still beat the PR I set yesterday with a lighter straight tailwind, but not by much.

Wind was back again today, did 13 km/h going out 40 coming back. If I can get out of the house by 8 am tomorrow, I should be able to get in a right with a tailwind both ways or at least get far enough north before the wind gets strong.

hit a 50+ miler today, something wasnt right. I started slow trying to conserve energy for the whole ride, but I bonked hard in the 35 mile range. Those last few miles were rough as a little wind started to kick up. Also met 4 girls today and blew it with all of them. I think I am gonna die alone.

>tfw a fat guy on a road bike climbs up a hill as if you were standing still while breathing closed mouth
>>
Did babby's first century yesterday. Not much climbing, just some rollers and a cat 4 followed almost immediately by a 7% cat 3 so no real walls to speak of. Listed as about 3000ft of climbing. 8mph winds and rain (10% forecast) though, completely messed up my electrolytes because I only drank 2000ml instead of the 3000ml of power drinks I was anticipating on drinking and someone ate my pre-ride banana, causing me to fight off cramps for the last 2 hours. Also couldn't read my HRM half the time. Probably going to change up my fit a bit and buy some new shoes because some pains only became bad between 70 and 100.

Clocked in at 6:14, so about 16mph. How did I do?
>>
Went out for a quick 6 miles with my wife to stretch out legs before a hike. We were riding on a bike path, track-standing side by side at a crosswalk, waiting for cars to pass. As we're standing, 45 year old chubby lycra-bro shouts "on your left, look out!" And shoots past me into traffic before I can even move. We caught up to him a few minutes later.

Why are there so many rude idiots in this sport and how do we fix that?
>>
>>890254
Sounds like you're the idiot rider for trackstanding at a cross walk waiting for cars to pass, unless cars had right of way, driving on a crosswalk, on a bike path.

I imagine there was no stop sign or red light, otherwise you would have mentioned the lycra fred running a red or a stop. Instead, the omission of these things, and a less than articulate way of describing the intersection, I imagine you were trying to be nice to a car crossing a bike path when you had right of way, and you were blocking the path for other path users.

By extension, I also imagine that you made up the part about catching up to him , and him being chubby and the part about a wife as pure fantasy, not because it is implausible, but in order to make yourself sound superior on the internet. Because I know for a fact the argument would be about an idiot riding into cars and breaking laws, not being a fat slow rider on a fred sled.

So yeah, stop thinking track standing is being cool and obstructing the normal flow of traffic is a good thing. If you have right of way, you take right of way. You might think you're being courteous, but as the lycra guy in your example shows, you're just fucking it up for people, forcing them to pass you, and supposedly forcing you to pass them.

I aborted my ride yesterday after puncturing about 10 minutes in and spending far too long trying to sort the tube out.

Did the ride I was going to do yesterday, some nice climbing, come back down partway on some gravel tracks on my cross-ish bike. Went pretty well, didn't stack anywhere. Had to walk it down what I now know is a segment called "death jumps" which has several bits well over -20%. Fuck that.

Then got to the end of the trail and the rear tyre had a pinchflat.
>>
>>890258
It was a bike path, crossing a residential road. No lights or anything. The bike path has an actual stop sign. This guy just didn't want to wait his turn and rode out into the street when it wasn't safe. Thanks for the novel though.

114 km of gravel and dirt roads today. Very nice ride aside from having to stop to take a shit on the side of the road TWICE. First time was just after I took this pic, beside the hay bale on the left. Second time in less than 2 weeks I had to make an emergency roadside pit stop. Wearing bib shorts is a disadvantage in these situations.

>>
>>890409
It was a mild case of diarrhea so fibre was the least of my problems. It might be a reaction to nutritional drinks. I slammed a bottle of generic Ensure both this and the last time. The drinks frequently do a number on my stomach, particularly if I drink gatorade first. They are convenient to quickly down 350 calories while refilling water bottles, but I may have to look at other fueling options.

>yielding to cagers
Not even once.
You yield to peds, because they are slower than you.
You do not yield to cagers. You take whatever steps are needed not to get killed by them, but if you have a chance to assert your right to the road, without undue risk of triggering road rage, you should do it.
>>
>>890509
I wasn't yielding, I was obeying my stop sign. I was on a path that crossed the roadway. I wasn't very clear on my explanation, sorry.

Nice 100 km ride today, it rained yesterday so I was prepared for the chance that the gravel roads would be shit, but they were just firm enough for mtb tires. The headwind going out was stronger than forecast. It died back down half way back.

Slowly chipping away at a mountain of 50 years worth of potash tailings. They are extracting the salt out of it.

And I had 2 dogs follow me. They came out from a farmyard to check me out then turned back. Then I checked my mirror and saw them following a few hundred feet back. That went on for about 5 km. Maybe they were intrigued by my rear strobe or the music I was playing on my bluetooth speaker.

Decided I didn't want to deal with the wind today, so I drove out to the valley mountain bike trails to see how construction of new trails was going. Looks like they just started, so nothing new ridable. Switched my Garmin from Smart to 1 second recording to get a better gpx trace of the trails to update the map. More trail out there than I thought, 21 km later I was pooped and still had a lot of ground not covered. Turns out despite being late October I still can't skip the sunscreen quite yet.

Out at the mtb trails today trying out some of the new paths that are being built. The builders are taking advantage of the wide ridges to make some relatively long runs. More switch backs and twists than the old trails which will make the easier to climb and keep erosion in check. One ride out there is usually about a week's worth of climbing for me.

Temperature today was between 1 and 3C with 25 gusting to 35 km/h winds. With the help of my winter boots I lasted 2.5 hours. I went with a warmer base layer than yesterday. So for just above freezing I was wearing what I usually put on for -15C during the winter. I usually do find the pre-snow cold to feel worse than once there is snow on the ground.

To compensate for the soles on my winter boots I need to raise the seatpost about half an inch. So I marked the summer seatpost position with electrical tape on the 3 bikes I use during the winter.

The rear tire on my fat bike was flat so I had to patch the tube. The rear wheel is a pain to remove. Because of the rear rack I have to unbolt the brake caliper to get the wheel out. And remove the QR skewer to make it easier to get the chain on / off due to clearance issues because the shadow RD and horizontal dropout. The flat was caused by a 1 inch long thorn stuck in the tire. It was so stiff at first I thought it was a nail.

Nice day so I spent a few hours out at the mountain bike trails with my fat bike. Last time I was there the rolling terrain on the new flow track managed to eject my QR trunk bag every time, so I left it in the car. I tried to hit every trail I could. Skipped a few meh ones that would have required me to do the full climb out of the valley once for each of them. Came across one that collapsed last fall. Since no one rides it anymore I got the 2015 KOM.

The construction crew is still out there building new trails, so I'll have to make another trip out there next week for the new stuff.

Rained the last few days so the trails will be unrideable for the better part of a week. There is so much humidity after last nights rain that the streets aren't drying off. Soon enough the ground will freeze solid so the dampness of the soil at the trails will be irrelevant.

Wet and cold weather is limiting me to paved roads this week. Wearing my high vis yellow windstopper jacket is definitely making me stand out against the leaveless trees and overcast skies.

I rode over to an area of new construction which was a mistake. All the roads in the area were covered in mud. The construction workers didn't look to be having fun. Due to the cold, every concrete curb and sidewalk they pour has to be tarped. Big piles of rolled tarps everywhere.

It snowed yesterday, then thawed and then it froze into ice sheets before the water could evaporate. There was also some freezing rain last night. I keep my bike outside and everything froze, derailleur, brakes, even my saddle had a thin sheet of ice on it. I managed to free my front brake, rear was still frozen.

Cx tires are fine in the road, desu since most are 32c they absorb bumps better, just can't corner at as high of speed... Expect to lose momentum faster and have to pedal more

Wew lads, did 38km today to my nearest city and back. Weather was AWFUL constant strong headwinds, pissing it down. Got very muddy but was fun.

>my village through nearby village to where the national cycle route is
>cycle on that to city
>was expecting it to be a rural road, but it was 75% mud and deep puddles and the rest road
>get to the city and cycle on the Netherlands-tier cycle paths
>surprise my mum at work, have lunch and go home

Have to say when I was nearly home I was suffering quite a bit and my legs weren't working that much any more, my area is really hilly ;_;

Proud of myself desu though, that was great fun.
>>
Left my Edge 800 on the map screen and started turning down all the crescents along my general intended route and adding other zig zag ride lengthening detours. 77 km in total in balmy 9C weather. Gravel roads were still a bit soft from the past week's 19 mm of rain, but will dry nice and smooth. The mountain trails are going to be a mud pit for at least the next few days. The creek and lake along my path had a thin layer of ice over it, but should disappear tomorrow.

Finally achieved my arbitrary metric goal of riding 10,000 km in year. How much more I can add to that is highly dependent on the weather. In the cold I don't usually go longer than 2 hours. And once there is snow on the ground my average speed drops to around 13 km/h. And when there is lots of snow on the ground and I'm using my fat bike my average speed can drop below 10 km/h.

Drove out to mtb trails hoping to get a ride in before they got wet again tomorrow. But they still hadn't dried out from last rain, so I did a short loop of the more grassy section before going home. I'm going to have to wait until the temperatures stay below freezing before I get to try the new trails.

Another ride on the rollers. Trying to dial in the saddle height / angle on a fairly new Brooks Pro. I want to put some hours on it over the winter so it is less rock hard come spring.

What noise?
>>
>>897224
As the water temperature changes causing it to expand or contract it creates a pressure difference causing the bottle suck in air or blow it out cause the silicone valve to open and close. Generally an intermittent clicking noise at night. Closing the lockout usually puts an end to the noise.

When coming inside after a cold ride it can let out a long continuous whine.

Gave the mtb trails another shot today. Dry spots, tacky spots, kind of sticky spots and really sticky spots. Fat bikes aren't the quickest climbing bikes, even less so with a couple extra pounds of mud stuck to the tires. There was a new section of trail that the builders didn't get around to compacting before they packed up, it was dry but soft and will take until spring to compact naturally.

A while back I was looking at a map and saw a spot where there should have been a road. So I looked at the satellite view and sure enough a very seldom used dirt road. It hasn't rained in a week so I decided to go ride down it, because autism. Very very crumbly crust 1.5" thick, collapsing it sapped all my momentum leaving me chugging along in my lowest gear. Only got 1/3 the way down before encountering some low spots with standing water. I'll have to wait until spring and when it is thoroughly dry before giving it another go.

Nice 70 km ride today. Had to stop mid point to switch to less warm gloves / hat. Noticed over 2 hours in I had only drank 1/2 my first bottle, I never drink enough when its cold. The dirt roads just aren't drying out. One I went down was like dense molding clay.

Everything was flowing smoothly, then suddenly Santa Claus parade! Blocked off streets and a shitload of traffic.

I've been seeing a lot of people skate skiing on roller skis lately. I saw a group of 4 of them today. If this el nino is like the one we had in 1998, that might be the only type of skiing they do this winter.

Warm fall is coming to an end mid-week. So long above freezing daytime highs. Several days of brutal winds will lead up to the temperature drop with gusts beyond 90 km/h on Wednesday.

I have a Gore Xenon 2.0 windstopper softshell jacket (there are two other very different products with similar names). I ordered it online when Wiggle had it for about $200 CAN, but didn't have a chance to try it first. Its race fit with no much extra room after accommodating my non-race fit body. It works well for me between 0 and -20C by using different base layers.

Gore makes one called the Phantom which is a looser fit, but doesn't have side zips. The sleeves on that one unzip which seems like a somewhat useless feature.

If you continue down that road you reach the frontage road and then can take that up to genesee. Cross the highway and then keep heading west is a nice short climb to the top of genesee mountain. That's where I usually go when I end up out that way.

Thanks for the tip!

I had plenty more energy that day, but the weather was starting to turn quickly, so I decided to get low before it started to precipitate.

It was warm enough (0C), and calm enough (10kph) for me to do the 60 km round trip ride to try that road again. Plus it had been cold enough overnight that if there were any wet spots they would be frozen solid. The sun started melting the surface so I was getting a bit of mud stuck to my tires. About 3/4 the way down the road sort of ends and just becomes a wheat field. When I got to the next east / west road I came across two cars parked drivers window to drivers window. Happens surprisingly often when out riding gravel roads.

This year someone stole a number off the sign for the long since demolished drive-in theatre. Today I noticed a sign next to the sign.

Managed to squeeze in another gravel ride over 70 km. Temperature on my computer only got as high as 3C the entire ride, but I was warm enough. I hate when I get a hair from my wool gloves stuck on my tongue, something that happened many times today. Lots of dogs on today's route, few ambitious enough to chase me.
