You can have a Europoor train general if you want, I don't like to mix and match. Buffer and chain couplers do not work with Janneys
How popular are railcars in your country? Here in Poland they're really popular for connecting cities with their Voivodeship capital.

anyway, why has Poland so little railway?
>>881042
When You look on this map (I know, poor quality) You'll still see borders of Polish XIX partitions in 1989; Russian and partially Austrian part was severely underdeveloped. Between the wars there was some development, but after WWII Polish railroad network had to be virtually built from scratch. Polish commies do it so well so Polish rails in 1989 were probably the worst of all European communist states; declining traffic and underinvestment of 90's didn't help. After 2000, there were a little better times for rail transport in Poland, but it network density lowered significally since 1989.
Czechoslovakia and Hungary have better and denser network in 1918, it suffered less in WWII i think, maybe even run better in the communist era, so have higher starting level in 1989 - and AFAIK, they started modern management reforms in early 90's (Communism on Polish State Rails lasts until 2000 :-)

I remember seeing this thing on /n/ and thinking how cool it is. Last week I actually sent some of my company's railcars on it. Pretty neat.
>>882147
I can't remember the name of the company, but I know it's based in Mobile, AL and goes to the Yucatan peninsula in Mexico.
I'm pretty sure we deliver cars to it based on all the CN boxcars on it.
Are you that dude that works in Minnesota but totally not for 3M?
I'm presently on Caltrain. They are just resuming service after 2 cars were hit in Burlingame 2 hours ago. This is the third incident this week.
Tuesday evening a car was hit in San Mateo. And Wednesday morning some dumbass was standing too close to the tracks on the platform and got clipped by a passing train.
And nobody has even had the decency to die from their stupidity.
Fucking assholes.
>>882194
CG Rail is the "railroad". Out of Mobile they interchange with CN, CSX, NS, and KCS (I think?). Good connections and an economical way to move some cars to southern Mexico.

>>882421
>Fro Alabama to Mexico? Interesting, what's the reason they use this method?
It's about a 5 day transit by ship to Coatzacoalcos, Veracruz. Alternatively, you can send from Mobile to Laredo or Brownsville, TX which is probably about 3-4 days transit by rail then interchange to a Mexican railway and they will bring it the 800 or so miles down to Veracruz. Total transit is probably 6-8 days, and you have to have your railcars transiting in Mexico longer exposing them to vandalism (big problem in Mexico).
>>882443
Traction motors are still on the axles. That's why you don't do it with diesel-electrics. You risk damaging and shorting the traction motors.
>>884521
>What are pigs?
Piggy backs, containers and trailers on flat cars. It's kind of an old term for it, but I like it. Simple and to the point.

Need strong couplers to pull freight, and rust doesn't stop 4500 hp from reaching the rails. The American rail network moves freight, not people. I'd venture a guess that a single US class 1 railroad moves more freight per year than most countries entire network.

The boiler on that is way up out of the way. I'd say much deeper than that and you will put the fire out. Which isn't as disastrous as you think, the engine still has steam so it can get itself out of the flood if it can., and that's an oil burner. So the fire can be relit almost any time.
The big thing to worry about would be metal stress on the firebox.

Took this pic at our overhaul shop last week. I work for BNSF, but this UP locomotive was on our tracks and was crashed into by one of our locomotives, so now we have to fix it for them. It was about 2 a.m. when I took this. A heavy fog was rolling off of the river nearby and the fuel tanks were being steamed out on the unit. Looked pretty spooky to me.

>>894888
>Do Not Board
>Do Not Occupy
Is that BNSF's way of saying "This UP train has cooties! Don't touch it!"
>>894979
Haha no, they are huge on safety and put that on every wreck unit just in case something might be damaged that could somehow injure a person who gets on it. That unit spent a couple of days on the wreck line and we just brought it to the wash bay a while ago to rinse off a bunch of battery acid.
>>894888
Was it sittng at a switch or something?
>>895005
I don't know the exact story on it or where on the system it happened, but it sure does look that way. I can't picture how else the damage could only be in the middle. Looks like a low speed side-swipe.
>>895176
Don't quote me on it, but they leave steam hoses in the tank for at least 24 hours before doing any work on it. I believe it breaks down all of the fuel residue and helps reduce the risk of a fire or explosion when they start cutting and welding on the tank.

How does everyone feel about PTC? It seems that BNSF are currently the only ones who give a shit about it. As of last month, they had controllers installed on over 3,800 locomotives. The next runner up, UP, had a grand total of 68 locomotives modded with PTC. The extension of the deadline even included a special clause for BNSF to protect them in the event that their technology is outdated and must be upgraded by the time everyone else get's their shit together.
>>903918
Where I work we're the guinea pigs for the whole system. Shit is going to be retarded and slow everything down. It's going to force engineers to run the truns in a very conservative manner, it's going to make it much more difficult to operate in non-CTC territory where you are joint with trains.
PTC should be forced on passenger railroads and fuck right off when it comes to freight.

Round 2. We are always fucking these things up! This time we have the UPY 598 involved in the same type of sideswiping accident on a switch. A little note on the UP 9746, the accident occurred back in January and the unit sat on a siding until coming to us for repairs. We just released it yesterday with a fresh coat of paint. My supervisor told is that BNSF had to pay $1,000 per day since the wreck plus the cost of repairs. I'd guess around half a million just for that part of it.

>>916100
oh my more than I expected. Do you know anything about Union Pacific? Thats literally all I ever see are those mustard yellow trains
>>916106
I know they hire people just to furlough them, but I don't personally know anyone that works for them right now. It's tough right now for railroads so getting a job with anyone won't be likely. I got furloughed from my job as a conductor, but I'm working as a track maintainer instead.
>>916113
Figures, oh well. I just see people bitch about Union Pacific here all the time.
Why's it tough for railroad? should freight be doing good? i'd imagine passenger rail isn't tip top
>>916129
Coal is in a perpetual spiral, fuel is cheap so trucking is being utilized more, and companies simply aren't producing as much product with the state of the economy. Car loads are down and railroads will try to protect themselves by deferring large spending and reducing the work force if they can.

>>921513
So BNSF keeps a set of passenger cars just for these special trains or how does this work?
>>921524
All railroads have a small fleet of passenger cars for use with company executives. They'll use them for special occasions like sporting events or if a lot of the chief officers are going to a region to check it out.
>>921522
Sweet. I always like to thank anons for making OC
>>921533

>ywn travel on your own private executive train

>>921725
There are richfags that have opulent personal cars that they hook up to the end of regular passenger trains by paying for it iirc.
>>921533
The old 'Football Specials' in Britain used to be any old stuff they could afford to get damaged by pissed up hooligans.
It's rare you get them nowadays, it's mostly just buses now.
>>921524
I don't see the big deal, all railroads have certain number of extra carriages for various reasons. Ssay, one fleet of carriages would be suspended for unuxpected repairs or other special trains and perioidic variation in demand. It's simple, basically when they retire a fleet, the pecimens in best condition are spared and mothballed in case of future need.
What surprises me more is that superbowl would be the roll with all we got situation instead of say, christmas.
>>921719
Ask good questions and you'll get good answers.
>>921725
Actually you can. Throwing a private car onto the end of Amtrak isn't that expensive. (https://m.amtrak.com/mt/www.amtrak.com/privately-owned-rail-cars) It's the storage fees and insurance you're required to have that makes it cost so much. Luckily there are companies that lease out nice private cars that are tacked onto Amtrak. I've seen a lot by some company that uses the Pullman name.
>>921933
I didn't know many railroads would still have those. At least our national operator has long crapped it's "presidential" fleet.
>>922124
the "office car specials" mainly come out for a handful of events every year, basically
>>922124
It's probably because these are private companies that still have a need to wine and dine customers and such. Then there's also the fact that the passenger service of the major railroads always had a bit of class to it like the old airlines. The companies just held onto a small, and I do stress it's a very small fleet, of their best passenger cars and kept them in great shape.
It's not that crazy to think they'd have them, it's just that you won't see them all that often.
>>922196
Oh, my bad. The presidential fleet (actually, just two cars) was infact exclusively reserved for the state high-ups.
They still have few regular saloon cars so you can still spend other peoples money and properly show it.
>>921933
Oh right, I forgot you guys have Amtrak for passenger traffic.

Also, the QR NGR (pronounce it however you wish) on delivery. Made in india of course so it probably smells like curry out of the box. Even though there was a train manufacturing facility in Queensland owned by Bombardier still manufacturing trains up until december last year
It's a bit early to replace the EMUs though, considering QR still has a shortage of trains for peak hour. That and the newer the train, the shitter the aircon. Newer ones are more humid inside and don't cool directly. That or they're completely impotent as is the case of the SMU 220's aircon (it's meant to be a 60kW unit but it functions like piss).
