São Paulo is building 3 high capacity commuter monorail lines right now.
One is partially in operation (two stops only), another is in construction, and the last with works starting

not transportation
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
So far it's one of the most unreliable urban rail transport mode in Kuala Lumpur (mostly because of long headway and frequent breajkdown. New models (as per picture) are on their way but 10 4-coaches monorail trains seems too few to achieve 5 minutes headway (currently it's about 15~20 minutes headway)

should have put some standard gauge metro instead. now they have a concrete forest in the city and are stuck with a proprietary system

looks like São Paulo monorail
Why do monorails always have such awful ride quality?
I have never ridden a 'smooth' monorail.
>>860154
because it's one rail, instead of two. More rails means more stability
more to it is that most trains have two four wheel trucks, monorails are moved by rubber wheels
Only in America are we able to fuck up monorails so badly they actually crash into each other on opposite tracks - something that obviously shouldn't be a possibility.
>>859075
Goddamn it. You fucked up.
>>859969
>should have put some standard gauge metro instead. now they have a concrete forest in the city
...
The only reason they choose monorail its because its cheaper and quicker to build.
All cities are actually made of concrete anyways.
>>860509
where is this?
>>860570
You can clearly see "Seattle Center" on the train, but yeah they crashed because one of the cars didn't yield due to driver error
>Gauntlet track
Why is this allowed?
its a good way to shit up your city

>To prevent a sideswiping crash, monorail drivers are supposed to call the operations base by radio when leaving the Westlake station [...] For the approaching drivers coming down Fifth Avenue, a signal on one of the track-support piers will show a green arrow when the tight Westlake Center area is clear of the other train
Of course this didn't cause the crash specifically, but at least buy a pair of automated signal contacts instead of calling manually each time.
>>860763
Why? There's only two trains.
>"Hey Jim, is Bob clear of the station yet?"
>"Nah, hold up a bit."
>>860791
>There's only two trains.
...and yet they still managed to fuck it up.
>>860509
>building two tracks too close to each other to use both
Now this is advanced stupid! It's like they wanted accidents to happen, let alone how this is a bottleneck perpetuating delays!
>>860791
Ok then, why not, here's an idea, make it two feet wider on the one passing segment?
>>860555
sexy
But seriously, why build a monorail?
>>862523
Your question is a bit vague. Do you meant about the Sao Paulo's decision to build monorail or the monorail itself in general?

>>862523
I guess it's because the concrete monorail tracks themselves are relatively cheap to build and maintain? Good quality concrete can last a long time.
>>869136
I'm unconvinced the track is cheap enough to offset all the specialized equipment and the lower efficiency of rubber tires. Same goes for guided busways, seems pretty dumb.

No. A monorail is typically built where the land is either too small or too expensive for other modes of public transportation. Monorail has lower land use than tram or BRT
>>869412
actually trams have lower land use since they can share space with cars or pedestrians
Monorails are good for one specific purpose: Rapid transit on one single route, where the ground doesn't allow for a subway and there isn't enough space on the ground for two-track heavy rail.
Monorail with several lines aren't a thing because switching is so complicated.
The downsides are limited expandability and compatibility with other modes of transport.

Seems to me most monorails are built in shitty and corrupt countries, where the interest was likely on short-term saving by building cheaper than heavy rail elevated metro, and bribes by the company wanting to build the system got them preferred over more standard systems.
The only systems that make sense are either for enclosed areas (theme parks, airports, etc.), and some light-rail lines which as elevated monorail made sense because of lack of space and cheaper cost over elevated standard light rail, without need for connections to other lines, like the one in OPs pic.
Prove me wrong.
>>889082
That's pretty much what happened in Sydney. The powers that be at the time wanted a monorail over a tram line purely because it was a trendy thing. Of course, the model they decided to buy in the end was only designed for theme parks so it had fuck all capacity on a short loop line. It was pretty much sold to Sydney Simpsons style That and by the end of it all, a ride was $5 a pop regardless of distance, making it more expensive per metre than many first class flights. Oh and it wasn't integrated into the ticketing system despite the tram line being run by the same company being integrated
And in the end, the tram line was built alongside a portion of it anyway until its demise
On a related note, there is a thread on 1chan about rack monorails used on hillside orchards and vineyards.

That's why it's called a monoRAIL. Get it? Rail? As in having very rough intercourse?
