Uh, hello, I know nothing about trains but I hate having to travel by air. Are there any lines that go from west coast to east coast that are pleasant to travel and cost about the same as a plane ticket? You folks seem like you would know this answer.

depends. if you get a room, it's kinda like a first class ticket in price (you have a bed though). just looked at a reserved seat from seattle to new york, and it was about $250 and left Sunday evening and arrived Wednesday evening.

Seats recline and you definitely have more room than on a plane. Long distance trains usually have an observation car, which is a chill comfy lounge. Seats are first come, and you can watch the country roll by with a glass of wine. People are social, so if you don't want to be, bring headphones.
You can bring your own food. Snack bars have options if you're in a pinch. The dining car takes dinner reservations.
All and all, i fucking love it. Can't stand flying coach, and can't afford any better. Would rather take a train just about anywhere.

Why don't you have "bunk-bed" sleepers in america? Here in Europe we still have a few lines, there's usually six beds in each compartment, and some trains have first-class cars that have only four and somewhat larger beds. They're not real beds, and not as comfortable as a real mattress, but they're flat so they make for better sleeping that reclining seats. It would seem like a logical in-between option instead of reclining seats and private rooms. These trains are dirt cheap, too, the reclining seats (which also exist) are barely cheaper.
Either way, sleeper trains are full of win.

We do have bunk bed sleepers in the US. However, they're only available for long distance (20+ hour) routes and Amtrak only has two styles, bedrooms that come with their own separated toilet or roomettes which come with a cleverly hidden toilet right in the room.
We don't have euro styled shared rooms because nobody would buy them, because Americans don't like sleeping with strangers beyond a coach seat.

The overnight trains from Spain to France, Switzerland and Italy were taken out of service coinciding with the opening of the HSR connection to France. However, in France there's no continuous HSR line until the Spanish border, so travel times for HSR between Spain and France are pure shit (over 6 hours Barcelona-Paris), and consequently demand is low (2 daily trains between Barcelona and Paris at present). The night trains were retired in an attempt to leave HSR as the only option, and thus increase demand somehow.
Nowadays there's still daily night trains in France from Paris all the way to the Spanish border, so you can still take a regional train to the border and a night train from there. The HSR link to France was a Spanish enterprise, and the spanish statal railway company Renfe was responsible for the international night trains, together with the french SNCF. The present night trains that run to the border are purely french run, so they weren't retired.
Adding to that, the international overnight trains weren't purely "bunk-bed" sleepers, they only had a few coaches for that, and others with roomettes with and without bathroom. Only the bunk beds were pretty cheap, and they'd often be full, while it's the roomettes that were completely underused.
tl;dr, cheap overnight trains are still in demand, they're just being retired to favor HSR

Some more info after some brief googling:
"The six former SP&S Passenger F's in series 9750-9760 had been withdrawn from revenue service in July 1972 and converted to rotary snowplow power plants 972550-L thru 972555-L. A power shortage beginning in early 1974 brought these units back to regular service. In April all six were sent to Dale Street shop for reinstallation of traction motors and renumbered back to 9750-9760. So hurriedly was the work done that the units retained their rust red MOW paint. Three of the group, (F3) 9750, (F7) 9758, and (F7) 9760 received BN logos and large numbers (like other F's) when they were returned to service."
All six of these units were assigned to Minneapolis Junction and worked the "Eastern F-unit Triangle" from Minneapolis and Superior west to Minot, ND for the remainder of 1974 and 1975. As part of the F-unit rebuilding program in 1976, all of these units were upgraded and returned to BN green. They continued in Twin Cities Region service until retirement in 1981.

When the CTA was formed, they inherited an order for PCC cars that they didn't really want but couldn't cancel. They also needed to modernize the "L" (which was still utilizing a large fleet of wooden cars at the time).
St. Louis Car Company had designed prototype rapid transit cars using the PCC technology (New York's "Bluebirds" and Chicago's 5000 Series) so the CTA scrapped their fleet within a few years of their arrival, and sent the parts back to be rebuilt into the 6000 Series.

I used to commute between DC and NY, the train is the ONLY reasonable choice. There's a so-called "shuttle" flight which is unpleasant and takes just as long with security and all that nonsense. I always felt like shit after taking the plane, but after the train I felt refreshed and relaxed.
