Your local hobby shop for starters. Also check out online hobby stores/model railroad sites.
Ask others for sites, I haven't been in the loop in forever.
There is a name brand cutter that is popular but I can't remember it. I used to see it advertised in the Model Railroader magazine.

Hey, this is probably a question for the board in general but I figure it's slow enough for the trainfags to stick their heads in here.

I really like the West Yorkshire looking steam layouts, all grubby stone mills in built up valleys and canals and stuff which seems to be mostly LMS territory but my uncle has a lot of LNER gear so I want to fit my layout in with his collection. I wonder if there's anything similar in LNER territory?

Also, embossed bricks and stone, what is the cheapest way to do it?

Why not look up photo databases/archives online of LNER operations and see what kind of industries are in the picture? Or look up maps of their lines and see what cities the railroad passes through and what kind of industries those cities had.

Not a Britfag so I don't even know what the fuck those acronyms are, but this seems like pretty basic research.

This would be the sort of thing I'd be making with the HO/OO track I have from childhood, a little shunting layout but with the aim of expansing it with further modules later on.

Probably a dead double track mainline on a viaduct in the background, or room for it on the module for later on when I can expand, canal on the left, brewery or engineering firm as the focus of the operational section of the layout.

Probably 3' deep and 5'-6' wide, being generous for full buildings rather than ones cut off at the edge of the scenic section.

To provide height for the viaduct the branch should slope upwards behind I think I can get away with as steep as 1 in 20, the viaduct will have to be 1 in 60 to be able to run longer trains.

But anyway, that's just the plan.

>>851215
Because I have not yet been to the UK and have almost no understanding of their geography, for all the googling I could do and scouring photo archives simply asking somebody that knows what they are talking about and that can point me in the right direction would save so much time.
>>
>>851202
>I wonder if there's anything similar in LNER territory?

LNER was huge, so yes. Leeds, Durham & Doncaster being obvious candidates.

>Also, embossed bricks and stone, what is the cheapest way to do it?

Embossed styrene; Slaters, South East Finecast...there's a bunch of them.

Lionel has gotten better they're finally starting to realize that consumers want remote control and upgraded a lot of their mid range locos now to have remotes and the street price isn't awful
If you want ultra realism O gauge isn't the right scale for you (unless you can afford a $1499 loco) o gauge has always traditionally been compressed unless it tells you an exact scale it's compressed

If i buy a starter set from a company, can i use trains from other companies on the track i have?

Also, any tips or recomendations?

You sure can. Lionel's Scout is the cheapest about $200. It when you get the sound systems for digital that there might be a problem. The trains will work but certain sounds might not work in a train using the system from another firm. Stick with analog at first and get Williams by Bachmann for locomotives. They have gone up in price but are good runners. You can get the older ones on ebay.

They tried to cheapen them by introducing the power functions line, but even then they're still expensive. Lego as a whole has gotten really expensive over the years, you might be better off building your own trains and ordering parts on bricklink.

Most of the trains are boxed up and put away for safe keeping now. My grandparents are both 85 now and still live there. My dad bought the house next door to them and looks after them though they are still quite independent. I live about a 3 hour drive away and go down at least once a month to spend the weekend with all of them.
Fortunately my grandparents are pretty awesome. I've never seen either of them or my dad have a drink of alcohol (maybe that's why I'm 26 and haven't ever tried it either).

My aunt can't keep stuff nice. My mom really wants my grandfather's handmade dinner table and chairs. Not just because she's greedy but because my grandparents gave my aunt a really awesome WORKING player piano and she trashed it.
Dirty kids and dirty dogs don't help.

But I will use and appreciate them, so I get what you mean anon.

Actually this is what little children like about it. For teens and older model trains fans it's more complex. Some are collectors and collect special trains. Some like to build their own little world with train layouts and run trains. There are also people who do it for nostalgia and own models of steam trains they know from early childhood. So everyone got a personal story.

Update, got all the track, I'll get my father's stuff that my uncle had and whatever isn't of sentimental value to my cousin. I have to put up a bit of coin to the estate for the live steam mallard but I've got ages to save up.

On the side, but it's been good spending time with my cousins again. Auntie is a bit of a hag though. Was given free reign over a heap of books by my cousins (who the estate goes to entirely) but my aunt sorted through what I wanted and took out stuff on my male cousin's behalf and then gave her daughter some lip for offering them to me.

But anyway, I'll be rearranging the spare room at my fathers that I use in the holidays and seeing how much space I have got. I imagine the room might shrink a bit once I figure out minimum radii.

well it's not that exciting, only 3x4m and in OO so there's not a heap of room

That's reasonable. I forget how large that scale is in regards to the others but you can come up with something nice.
>>
>>888689
Well there's not too much that's smaller, comatose TT, and then N then all those increasingly small and obscure boxhead and jap scales
>>
>>888690
You can def create a nice layout in a room that size. I looked up the scale and it's basically HO.

What theme /era etc are you thinking of modeling?
>>
some inspiration for building a layout
http://www.scarm.info/layouts/track_plans.php?scale=HO
>>
>>888693
It will still be pretty cramped, though using the outside of the room will help.

Where I model will probably be dictated by what rolling stock I get given by my cousin, there's a mix of British steam era models from all over the place, GWR, LMS, LNER, and British Rail. Can't recall any Southern stuff. It should be mostly LNER and LMS stuff though, from memory. What I end up with is anybody's guess though.

I'll be buying a live steam model of pic related from the estate so maybe a sort of not-Leeds, which had an LMS and LNER shared station. The live steam also limits my options with the layout design, no main line gradients steeper than probably 2%, and I want to have my rolling stock close-coupled so I think I will opt for a generous 30" min radius.
>>
>>888702
Na m8, if you plan properly it won't be as cramped as you think.

Nothing wrong with the mechanism, just the sleepers behind it have come undone and broken a few chairs. I figure if people can hand lay them by hand I can fix up part of one.
>>
>>889398
>Nothing wrong with the mechanism

Nope. Look closer. Both turnout rails are against the straight/turnout rails I.e. they have spread. There is no stretcher bar. The mechanism & over-center spring are all contained in the mechanism at the *back* of the turnout, which has come away with the rest of the sleepers.

Got pics I my laptop if anyone is interested I can post when I get to it.
>>

Life-like is garbage and there are hundreds of people like you on eBay hocking their old busted models with rapido couplers. It isn't even worth the cost of shipping.
>>
>>889447

>spend many hundreds of dollars on new track and switches
>spend time reconditioning free track
model railways would be unfeasibly expensive if I had to drop the sort of coin required for a decent layout.

>>889405
>Nope. Look closer.
There is a stretcher bar, it's the outer rails that are bent inwards because there are no sleepers at the base of the turnout. I'm not sure that the bit at the top of what fell away does anything other than guard the mechanism and form a mounting for the solenoid.

LNER and LMS were two of the 'big four' railway companies formed after the end of the first world war, and amalgamated into BR after the end of the second.
LNER stands for London and North Eastern Railway, and ran from London to Edinburgh along the east coast of England and a bit further north.
LMS stands for London, Midland, and Scotland and ran from London to Glasgow through the middle of England, serving the massive industrial cities like Liverpool and Manchester.
BR stands for British Rail, and encompassed all of England.

Hey thread, so I have terrible and stupid ideas and maybe someone here has experience with T scale.

I know they can run upside down quite happily, and nip up and down 45 degree slopes without trouble, but how are they on (slightly) twisted or vertically-curved track, or running sideways? I have some science-fictional plans that involve building a model of the inside of a circular structure,* and even if I can't get it big enough to have a tiny fucking train ride up the side of a half-pipe it would be neat to have a slow transition up the curve while they travel the length of the structure.

I mean, I'm building the thing anyway even if I can't make trains do what I want, they'd just be an added bonus.

* Think something very slightly like an Elite Dangerous docking bay.
>>
>>896876
And yes, there's a second area planned with nice landscapes, because fields and hills and trees are neat and a nice change from metal.
>>
>>896876
I didn't even know T scale was a thing. Jesus those fuckers are small.
Since there are magnets in the wheels I don't see why your plan wouldn't work.

Why is Santa Fe such a meme railroad for model manufacturers? It seems like Bachmann, Kato, Atlas and other lower quality manufacturers always slap their paint scheme on whatever model they make.

Are you retarded? Think for ten seconds why manufacturers would sell their products with a particular feature over and over again.
Go ahead, think and then let's see what answer you come up with.

A lot more actual modelers seem to like Southern Pacific more than Santa Fe, yet you don't see SP models as frequently as you do SF.

Santa Fe marketed their passenger service well plus they had tourist stops in some towns. Also the Harvey House restaurants which was the first locovore restaurants. Lionel's Santa Fe F3s were one of their biggest sellers. For you SP fans here a Cotton Belt Dash 9 by Williams. CB was bought by SP and used their livery.

What's the most you all are willing to spend on a single locomotive?

I won't spend more than $150 on one N scale locomotive, $200 for HO.
>>
>>902485
Why the $50 price gap?
>>
>>902488
HO locomotives are usually on average $50 to $100 dollars more expensive than N scale, even if its the same model by the same company. Probably has to do with size and detail differences between scales.
